In this VLOG I discuss how Dutch Jewish migration led to the 8 hour work day. Sephardic Jews began arriving into the Netherlands in the 16th century from mostly Portugal and Spain but by the 17th century Ashkenazi Jews began coming into the Netherlands as well. The communities did quite well and grew in size but by the mid-19th century there was a large migration of Dutch Jews to the East End of London. While Dutch Jews had been migrating back and forth between London and the Netherlands, this migration of Dutch Jews in the 19th century, nicknamed Chuts, were a unique group among the Jews in London and the East End. Many migrated for economic opportunities and worked some sort of craft job, with cigar making being one of the top trades among these Dutch Jews. A large portion of this migration settled in certain areas of the East End due to the closeness to the Tobacco Dock on Wapping Lane. London wasn't always the last stop of this migration of Jews out of the Netherlands in the 19th century, many would continue on to the United States, Canada, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
One member of this migration was Samuel Gompers, who had been born to immigrant parents in London. Samuel worked in the cigar factories at a young age but the family soon moved to America where Samuel continued working as a cigar maker. In America Samuel joined a union and soon found himself rising up the ranks to become a leader in the Union. In 1886 Samuel was part of founding the American Federation of Labor (AFL) and he was elected as the first President of the organization. As president of the AFL, Samuel led the fight for the 8-hour work day along with a few other ideals which shaped the future of the American labor movement. Due to his influence, Samuel Gompers has become the face of the American labor movement but his family's experiences from Amsterdam, London, and America shaped many of Samuel's ideals which then shaped the history of American labor.

I knew of Samuel Gompers and the Labor movement, but I had no idea that he was Dutch or that he was Jewish. That is why pursuing genealogy is a better avenue for learning history than sitting in a survey class.

Exactly! Genealogy tells an overall story that history lessons don't often discuss. It's interesting how much can be learned just by looking at someone's family history.

Great video. I am a trade union member, who has Jewish heritage, so I can relate to this video. I have read about Samuel Gompers. I don’t have any ancestry from the Netherlands, because my Sephardic ancestors went to Greece.

Hello sir ,we are members of Jewish Sephardic community. Also a Dutch governor was in Cochin his name was Adrian van ommen ,Dutch colonised this area for more than 109 plus years. During this period many high level Jewish officers in charge like Abraham ,Luke etc. can you please give us some more light on this subject. Few Jewish families were also brought to this area during this time in 1650 on wards,and our ancestors came to Dutch from Spain during Spanish Inquisition ,thankyou Baruch HaShem,also we want to know do we have some direct blood relatives in ommen

Depends on when your family immigrated as some records may not be public if it was a recent immigration. The best place to start is your own family, start building your family tree and see if you can start finding distant cousins. It may be that you already have a relative who has begun the research.

I would like to see a video on involvement in 'Friendly Society' contribution to health insurance, funeral insurance after world war i giving returned unemployed military trades. My great grandfather descended from Dutch Jews, in England, was the company secretary of a 'Friendly Society'. The 'Oddfellows' health insurance was copied by the National Health Service'.. His father and grandfather were bootmakers at a time when wooden shoes was popular in London. The ancestors earlier were in Somerset where they pronounced the letter "ESS" as "ZEE".

The term is CHUTS, a great video apart from that. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chuts My Jewish ancestor was a Cigar maker and he had a kiosk in Shaftesbury Avenue in London. He was orthodox and his name was Arbede. His daughter, Catherine was a seamstress and she married outside of Judaism. She was rejected by the family, so she only brought up her eldest son as a Jew. Joseph was my grandfather. I'd be interested if you have anything on the Arbede's. I think they went from Spain to the Netherlands prior to going to London. Although some of the ancestors stayed in Amsterdam and I think that they must have died during WW2.

I'm half Dutch half (eastern European ashkenazi) American and so half my family tree is very developed (my current earliest recorded ancestor that I have found was born in the 1480s) and the other half is relatively pathetic, going into the mid 1800s because I can't find anything past the ancestors that migrated to america (and in one instance to Britain and then america)
@GeneaVlogger
@GeneaVlogger 4 жыл бұрын
Eastern European Ashkenazi is definitely a very difficult ancestry to trace and even if you are lucky enough to get documents on the family back in their town of origin, it often won't go back that many generations because many Jewish families in Eastern Europe adopted surnames starting in the early-19th century.

I can understand your interest in seeking your roots but from the perspective of a general Jewish history your presentation is very narrow and thus misleading. I happen to know that at the same time of Jewish migration to the Netherlands there was also a large migration to Denmark, especially to Slesvig-Holsten where new communities developed in Altona and elsewhere.
