How Early Can You Safely Do Bee Hive Splits?
How Early Can You Safely Do Bee Hive Splits? Is a beekeeping youtube video explaining that you shouldn't get into a hurry trying to increase your number of bee hives to early in the spring. Night time cold temperatures can kill the brood, and you could end up killing the whole young split. Wait until night time temperatures are in the upper 40s or 50s to be safe. You have plenty of time to increase your production.

There is a lot to be said about this subject. If you make a split with a large amount of open brood the bees will be to spread out trying to keep all of it warm, and they will fail. Shake a large amount of nurse bees in with a small amount of open brood and they will cluster around that small amount and have no problem keeping it warm.. I have been keeping bees for 12 years, and they teach me something every year. We only get one spring a year, that’s a short learning period.

Dave, water your blueberries early spring to keep the soil colder longer. This will cause the bloom to be later and miss the early cold snaps. We do this on all our fruit trees and it works. We are north of you in northern Kansas.

So cool.....will this work for magnolia trees? Ours always blooms early here in Ohio and then it snows or it's really cold and then we don't get to enjoy the blossoms.

@@mizzprettyhuston Not sure but it won't hurt to try. Water out as far as the drip line of the plant or tree. The drip line is the outside diameter of the foliage.

I'd rather make half the splits early and heavy than wait until end of March or early April. After 3-4 weeks those splits will be ready to split again. As well as the ones you took brood from.

I won't even attempt to do splits until mid May up here in northern Illinois. So many new northern beehavers watch the southern beekeepers youtube videos and don't take into account that the south is at least a month to a month and a half ahead of the northern states. Love your videos and would like to say that you know what you are doing.

My bees showed up in good shape. A couple of weaker starts due to shipping stress, two of them were in great shape. I’m hoping to get 2 strong hives headed into winter from the 4 packages I purchased. Starting from scratch...maybe this year I make combs to put packages into next season. Thank you for the bees.

Hey Dave I watch your videos all the time. Watch yours more than anyone else. Question for you I see you make all those splits but do you move them to one of your other yards to mate? I just made 5 two frame nucs today and plan to finish them and paint Monday. Want to make some spilts this year and raise some queens to sell also. I’ve kept bees nearly fifty years but this will be a first for grafting queens. Your videos and a few others have got me going so here’s hoping. Thanks again for all your video support.

It's nice to have spare splits nucs to overwinter just in case one of your hives die during the cold winters. Last year I didn't treat for mites and had 2 hives next to each other, the parent colony had mites and died, the offspring colony didn't had any they are a bit meaner but survived and are doing beautiful.

I’m using a double screen board for my first split here in Iowa. If you find them prepping for a swarm you make a split even if it’s early. But at least a double screen board allows the split to share heat with the parent colony.

You can save your blueberries! If you get a frost, got out in early morning BEFORE sun hits them and spray them with a garden hose. If you get rid of the frost before the sun hits it, they will make it. The frost cooks the buds when the sun hits them. The frost causes a greenhouse effect and cooks them.

I just ordered a few things from Barnyard bees online.....I can't believe I was able to get two frame feeders for the price I paid for one here in Ohio......thank you so much for the sales.....we are able to afford more for our hives because your website offered things cheaper. Also, David do you think that small hives like you have will live here in Southern Ohio during the winter? Do you feed them all winter? Also, do you have hives that make honey that you sell?

Hey David on your blueberry bushes if you have a water hose close by you can spray them with water and put a layer of ice on the bloom. It will save them. I use to work at Ison's Nursery in Brooks,GA. and we would turn the sprinklers on to do the same. Or if you have a sprinkler you could do that way also.

Hey David, I got my package of bees today that you shipped to me and everything was good. The queen and attendants were alive and well when I installed them. I'm glad I wore my bee jacket because the weather here in Alabama was cold and overcast and I got my thumb stung lifting out the feeder can. So then I had my wife get my gloves after I removed the stinger. But all in all I was finally initiated into beekeeping. I'll check on the Queen in a few days weather permitting. A lot of rain coming my way.

You are right about the funky weather, ground temperature and freezing plants. Frost blankets help about 5 degrees, anything more and they are done.. My hives are all single boxes and I had to wrap them with moving blankets to prevent damage from the wind knowing there was a load of brood, it got down to 12 degrees and the wind chill around zero. Not interested in doing any splits until there is something blooming as the start of a nectar flow.

Last year here in pa, I took a small split April 1st. We get hard frost into may. Had a laying queen by May 1st. I actually took 3 small splits on March 14th, was in them today and they was still doing good temps been going crazy, one night would be upper 30s lower 40s, and then another night be low 30s high 20s. It can be done, I always go by drones, but then again we are not used to mostly warm weather up here.
