I've been on Ebay since 1999. I buy mostly computer parts and stuff, mostly used parts. However, in the last 5 years my use of Ebay has really tapered off due to a lot of their policy changes. I also used to occasionally sell used items on Ebay, but not anymore. The costs charged to the sellers have really gone up in the last few years, so much so that it just isn't worth the effort anymore. In addition, as a seller you are wide open to the scammers who buy something from you and then claim it wasn't as described or some other issue and Ebay always sides with the buyer and gives them a refund no matter if the reason is true or not. I really feel for the sellers who are trying to make a go of it on the platform, especially those that have been around a while. I know a lot of them have left the platform, although it doesn't seem to have hurt Ebay's bottom line.
@doujinflip19 сағат бұрын
eBay was my ecommerce lifeline (along with Walmart, Newegg, etc) after Amazon blocked me for reverse charging on a scam purchase that Amazon wouldn't investigate. They lost all the revenues from my purchases with eBay as I boycotted Amazon over the next two years, which they seemed to get the point because Amazon promptly reenabled my account when I finally came back and asked.

eBay doesn't always "Side with the buyer"
@bodyarmour782016 сағат бұрын
Unfortunately, this video is wrong on so many levels. The fees on ebay have gone off the chats, and now they force feed 75% of sales through advertising collecting more fees from sellers. Wenig destroyed eBay's identity and all the c-suite moved since him have been to extract as much money from sellers as possible, which ofcourse increases sale price Revenue and GMV for eBay. The devil is in the details, eBay has been losing active users at a high rate and sales volume is also down substantially. EBay is rotten to the core, and it's going to be along time before it's restored to even half of its former glory.
@jrstf11 сағат бұрын
Whatever Ebay does, Amazon does worse. However, I do feel bad for scamming an Ebay seller. After my product sat in NYC for a few weeks, I reported it undelivered and got a refund. A while latter, it continued on and I received it. Unfortunately, once the issue is resolved, Ebay allows no further communication between buyer and seller so there was no way I could pay. I felt pressured to report it because the "last day to return" date was approaching. Now I know better, USPS can hold packages up a very long time.
@IanHobday10 сағат бұрын
@@zacharyhenderson2902 For "item not received" they'll usually side with the seller if delivery can be proven. For "item not as described" they'll side with the buyer 99% of the time. If the buyer returns a box of rocks instead of the item, it's almost impossible to get eBay to listen and cover the loss. They care about buyers a LOT more than sellers because it's much easier to find people who want to make money (new sellers) than it is to find people with money to spend (new buyers). eBay has also learned that sellers will take more abuse than buyers, as long as the abuse isn't too severe.

In eBay's near-downfall and remarkable revival lies a universal truth: success comes not from imitating others, but from embracing what makes you unique. Their transformation from a struggling Amazon copycat to a thriving marketplace shows that our perceived weaknesses often hide our greatest strengths - we just need the courage to be authentically ourselves.

Yes, indeed, I'm seemingly one of this small group. eBay is my place to go when searching for rare products from the past, in my case often technical devices. There's nothing that can beat eBay in this area for me. And the customer support is brilliant, when I ever have an issue. Without eBay I would safe a lot of money, but this is not what I want 🙂.

There is still an issue with product search. Hard to find items most of the time. Lack of inventory/product or a lingering issue with search results? Or could it be the implementation of promoted listing at the tail end keeping eyes away from relevant product?

Sadly I rarely use EBay since they started to collect taxes from the seller AND the buyer. My items are used and are marked below retail value. I already paid taxes on it when I bought it the first time. Do we collect taxes at garage sales, swap meets, facebook market place, or any other type of place like that? No we do not. We are not making a profit off the stuff, so why charge us again?

You're supposed to pay sales taxes regardless of the marketplace it was transacted in. For small one-offs it's not worth finding the violators, but as you get more established and efficient at pushing products you also have less of an excuse to "forget" about filing properly.
@Blue-Tiger-u7s15 сағат бұрын
I haven't like it either, but it was the government doing that, seeing more money they could make. Legally we are supposed to collect taxes on regular sales, I think only occasional ones like an annual garage sale being excused. A big and very public company like Ebay was a target for the -money grabbers- legislators.
@AndrewNi-c4cКүн бұрын
companies like eBay who screw over buyer/sellers by making customer service impossible to reach, are always terrible. They are multi-billion company, yet they refuse to provide email support and a customer service number (even the chat service stopped). They create a maze of menus and FAQs for you to jump thru before they'd let you attempt contact with a customer service. Being a buyer, eBay tries to improve the experience and its relatively pain free if nothing goes wrong with your order. But for sellers? nope.... Yet in the end, eBay can get away with it, b/c there's more customers buying and new sellers replacing the old ones who had left.
@Metsfan198622 сағат бұрын
They lost 40 million users since 2018. But got their profits up with all their add on fees and features. If active users continue to go down, they would have to monetize things even more to make up for that.

eBay was great for unique one off items. They tried becoming more like Amazon by ranking listings based on the number of sales generated and demanding more item specifics making listing single items insufferable and giving preferences to bulk new Chinese products. The new promoted listing features sells the top spots to sellers willing to give them a bigger cut than sellers most likely to deliver a good product/experience. Now the customer service is automated and you can only speak to a person for select reasons they permit. Thankfully some of their new changes are going in the right direction, we’ll see.

Started with ebay in 98 and rarely use it now. Used to be when an item was listed you knew the seller had it and you would get it in a reasonable amount of time usually. Over the recent years, I can't count how many times I get "sorry the item is out of stock" after paying or I'm just unable to find anything because of the massive amount of chinese sellers and their junk. That used to be limited to Amazon, but now they are really equal to me.

I think I tried to privately sell some used items on eBay back then when they were trying to build their "catalogue". It was a horrible experience, absolutely doomed to fail. Why tf would they expect me to fill out a form demanding information in like 50 categories when I try to sell a pair of jeans someone in my family bought but never wore? I'm much rather using my country's version of Craigslist to sell random stuff now, which was actually founded and for the longest time owned by eBay, funnily enough.

@sugarpuddin Here is a counterpoint: I've been selling used stuff on Ebay since '99 and still doing it today. The market is still there. Especially with incoming tariffs, people are more apt to save money buying used instead of new these days. With rising inflation and corporate greed pushing the cost of living upwards, people are doing whatever they can to cut spending and buying used instead of new is a big part of that. Amazon is full of cheap imported junk and not everyone is looking for that.

I worked for eBay from 2020-2023, and I can kinda see how it looks like that. BUT I do think the seller programs they have still encourage and help individual sellers/small businesses to succeed (authenticity guarantee, ebay intl shipping, trading cards, etc. Like I used to tell sellers to use them as much as possible). Outside of those programs though, they tend to get fcked over cuz of buyers finding loopholes in eBay's return policies. This may be why it looks like eBay values bigger companies selling in their platform.
