I love that speech at the end "This might not be the right thing to say while receiving this GOTY award, but I've made up my mind to create even more interesting games than this." That just shows how passionate this dude is, and that passion leads him to create these amazing games.

It's actually scary to create a game without knowing if it will be successful or not. I can totally relate to this feeling. I'm currently working on porting my most successful Flash game "Get a Little Gold" to mobile, and I really don't know how it will perform or if it will find its audience. It's driving me crazy.

Considering their beginning making games like Kings Field before continuing into the next generation with games like Eternal Ring, Evergrace and Kuon.. These guys know a lot about taking chances and commercial failure. They've been behind very successful series such as Armored Core but during the 2000's their fantasy games were more endearing than anything. Demon Souls and then Dark Souls was when they finally seemed to hit the mark in the fantasy market and see some much deserved success. That said, as someone who's followed them from the 90's I would say I felt that Elden Ring is strangely evocative of Evergrace and Eternal Ring and not necessarily in a good way. The worlds/environments in those games are also pretty big for the time but very very hollow ( no pun intended ). It's still a great game, and even a 'bad' FromSoftware game is still pretty good, but I can see why there was skepticism behind the scenes.

I think whats most fascinating about fromsoftware is to see where it all started with Kings Field. Looking at this humble beginnings gives me as an aspiring indi hope to achieve even something at all.

I think open world games just don't work for me. I love exploring tightly designed branching worlds more than anything, but open worlds completely punish my desire to search every nook and cranny. I doubt I'll ever finish Elden Ring, just because exploring the vast world to the level of detail I enjoy got dull by the third time you run across all the same encounter types, I got rather overleveled (I should get better at self imposed limitations to counteract that, but still) and I just can't bring myself to rush to the finale to get it done, because I know it would feel sucky to me.
@nnichael

There is no overleveled when it comes to the final area, in my experience.

Elden Ring is like a 5 gallon of your favorite Ice cream, you can't finish it in one sitting. I took a break from Elden Ring for months then when I came back, my humanity restored. And I finally tried PvP, quite exhilarating!

I hope we never get ER2 and that From distances itself from open worlds: while gorgeous to see, ER is the least good Souls imo (last one would be Sekiro, for me, because no build freedom).

honestly i find it very weird to hype up elden ring this much even though its basically a reskin od dark souls 3… like I have yet to find any design decision in ER that isnt already present in their previous titles… and nobody can really prove otherwise since nobody can pinpoint any actual differences in design. in short, they just made a new Ip, plastered a new backstory onto it (which couldve been literally anything, so JRR was more of a PR move), and used the exact same formula as before to make a new product… why that title is treated so much more different that any FS game before is void of any logic

The previous ones had more of a metroidvania design, this one is open world and has a lot more content. Also you take the lore very lightly, people love that kind of stuff. It’s fine if you don’t like it, but your statements are just you being ignorant. It’s like saying “I don’t understand the hype of gta6 since it’s most likely going to use the same formula”

Elden ring is such a troll game, To the point where I’m like , I don’t care to continue progressing. Everything is there to kill you in a mostly frustrating way.

Oh it's far less trollsome than previous games. In Elden Ring if you can't beat something 90% of the time you can stop fighting whatever is killing you and go somewhere else to get stronger, most of their games hold up a middle finger while laughing and saying "git gud" because you have to beat the enemy before you to move on. One thing I think might help you progress is you need to accept and get over the fact that progressing in this game means along the way you're going to die, a lot. It's not just you it happened to *all* of us especially the ones yelling at you to git gud. If you finish the game you will probably die over 300 times. If you can't accept that from the start then it's a good sign that it's not for you.
@jaulloa21

@@InMaTeofDeath I get that but it’s a trial game of figuring out opponents moves in order to defeat them. That’s all the game is really. Just a set of trials. It’s fine but Not very entertaining if that’s all the game is.

@@jaulloa21 Maybe not to you but it is objectively true that makes it fun to myself and millions of others. Not every game is for everyone I would never touch Fortnite or Minecraft but that doesn't make them objectively not entertaining just because I don't like them.

I mean in all honesty, elden ring was a bit too overrated It's still a good game but people really go overboard with saying how good the game is. Its got A LOT of flaws and it isnt the 10/10 masterpiece everyone says it is. Just take a look at the reviews. The game is probably a 7.5 to an 8 out of 10 game for a lot of people.
