Served as an Electricians Mate in the US Navy on three ships back in the 1960s. I feel it was one of the best enlisted jobs onboard ship for the simple reason you had the run of the whole ship from the aircraft warning lights at the highest point to the bottom of the engine room and from the bow to the stern. Extremes in duties included standing watches in a 135 degree diesel generator room in the tropics to working through the night to replace circulating fan bearings down in a minus 10 degree Reefer Hold. Every day was a learning experience, not all fun, but great memories.

I've wanted to work on a large commercial ship like a container ship for years. Thanks for providing a look into what life is like on board. Years ago I had the opportunity to work on a tug boat that pulled a cargo barge between Oregon, US and Hawaii. I turned it down to avoid losing my girlfriend at the time, and I've regretted it ever since.

We live on the South coast of Devon in the UK and regularly see these ships sailing past and have always wondered what they were like on board. Just a quick question - In a big storm does the size of the ship ride it out, or do you feel it pitching and rolling like a smaller ship like say a ro ro ferry ? Once I went on a Cruise, and at the final dinner the Cruise Director read some of the most ridiculous questions he's ever gotten from guests. One one of the guests had asked him " Does the ship make its' own electricity ? " To which he had replied " No, we have a big, long, extension cord that goes all of the way back to San Diego ".
