For years I've snuck up on the edge of the pedal rabbit hole and took short, small looks. Around the mid-late 70's we were doing a cover of Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying, and a friend gave me a pedal that made 'whooshing' sounds, like surf, and I used that for awhile. When we added a 'Stones' set, I found a Boss BD, to make my 80W silver face twin w/jbl's growl a little. I liked the BD, and used it with a Morley volume/woah for years. During a 2 year sabbatical I loaned it to a friend and it disappeared. Also during that time I had my working guitars refreshed, and bought a new Yamaha RevStar w/P90's (shocked myself on that one LOL), now I'm making my very first pedal board!! That's a big deal for a cat that's been playing 55 years!! LOL I bought a Voodoo labs PS, and a new Boss BD2 so far. Found a comp90 at a garage sale, and bought a Korg tuner pedal. Now I'm listening to Sir Josh to determine what my essentials might be. Appreciate you guys!!! 8) --gary

I got one of these two weeks ago after watching your video. It's a tad darker than I was expecting but it's really nice. Even with the blend all the way off it adds some really nice thickness. I think it's boosting the lows or low mids a bit, but not totally sure. Fun pedal. Now I can keep my DM-2W set for longer delays and use this for slapback and thickening. Tightens up nicely with some compression in front of it. Really happy with it.

When I first saw the the reissue, I immediately thought about that obscure EHX pedals episode. And the statement I made about not buying another pedal this year unless something crazy happens, like I find a vintage BK Butlers Tube Driver for an insane deal, or EHX actually reissues the Slapback Echo. I’m just waiting to get the Slapback, and last week got an insane deal on a vintage Tube Driver (1/6 of what a Bad Monkey is being sold for at the time of this video). So 3 months in, the two scenarios I deemed nearly impossible happened. I can’t wait to try them together. I love the Slapback’s doubling effect; it reminds me of that double tracked guitar on “Shine on You Crazy Diamond” (the third solo). Hope EHX continues to surprise!

Now, if he would reissue the EHX Electric Mistress Flanger "As Manufactured" in 1979-1980, for those "Spirit Of Radio/Alex Lifeson"- Flange Tones, I would DEFINITELY buy one, and later match it up with the Small Clone, and a Slap Back! If you're reading this, Josh, beg and plead, (or push, whatever needs to be done!), to have Mike M. METICULOUSLY recreate the Electric Mistress like Lifeson used on the intro to 'Spirit Of Radio!' Yeah, I've already heard that the current Deluxe Electric Mistress does the job, but there is 'something' missing, a 'thickness' or a 'warmth'. And it 'is' audible, I really don't think my ears or brain are playing tricks on me. If Mike can reissue the EXH Slap Back in a smaller enclosure, then he can faithfully recreate the 'Late 1970s-Early 1980s'- version of the EHX Electric Mistress Flanger, and put it in the 'current' Deluxe Electric Mistress enclosure, can he not? 🤔😐😁

Part of the plan for the physical emulation thing is to get a cheap and effective pedal for the analog version. The short time option switch and EHX price ratio pretty much rates, but in the nano it is especially perfect for the ultimate contrast. I can put one of these on the dry kill position into that analog spot. A/B comparisons will have to wait until I can score another JBL 2485, but it is not feasible to get the roll of conduit into the suburban yard here anyway. I could run just a low-pass into a cone transducer, even. Out on the farm I had hi/low pass filter and spare amp running fifty foot of conduit between the driver and horn. The mantra was always, of course, "They make a pedal for this". But yeah, fattens the tone.

If anyone can answer the question below to educate me, please do! Why would you want a slap echo pedal? Doesn't it work just as well with any delay pedal that can have much longer delay time, but you just put the time very low to mimic slapback?

The slap echo is not just a short delay, it needs to have like no feedback repeats and a filter (in this case an analog circuit you can saturate with the gain). For the money, it’s a perfect one trick poney. TLDR: you could try get something close with more work for more money, or buy this if you just want a slapback on literal tap.

absolutely. some people always have a slap no matter what and this is cheap + analog, and simple. It also goes a little further than most delays because it has a gain knob - so it’s great for kicking on as a solo boost with built-in slapback. So it’s like a “soloing preset” in an analog pedal. it’s got a niche, but if you’re a slapback person you’ll get it. then you can keep your normal delay for other delay sounds.

The way that this is sounding at the beginning is that as you go clockwise, you are blending in only echo...so it adds latency to the signal and drives you totally insane. Other than that, seems like an awesome slap.

Blend is a mix between dry and wet. You can go clockwise for wet signal and yes. The delay will drive you nuts cause you can’t hear the dry signal. Same with memory toy. 12 o clock is 50/50

I am a bit late to the party, but I would really like EHX to reissue their big dual preamp tube pedal series. I got the Black Finger, and absolutely love it, actually even bought a backup recently, so now I got two Black Finger pedals, as it is an essential part of my setup. Unfortunately though I was stupid enough to the LPB 2ube stereo/dual channel tube preamp that I also owned at some point, and the The Wiggler, tube tremolo and vibrato pedal, that I also owned at some point. Very much regret that and would buy these again if you reissued them, as they are pretty rare to find used, and also costs more than they did originally from new.

I've been trying to get the slap-back of the Stones records 78-81. Can't seem to nail it with any of my pedals and I have some good ones. I was stoked to get this pedal but I'm really bad at settings. Anyone have a setting? I'm sure it's more Keith's right hand. Funny he really only gets mentioned by the Satisfaction fuzz but that's the last thing I want. But that's also a sound that I never hear sounding like the record.

@@skatertrev7 hmmmm. I've kinda got all that stuff. I bought the Joyo Bantamp Meteor. The tiny terror clone. I found it sounds better than the real thing plus more features. I wanted the real Orange because they just look cool but its become my main amp even though I have a collection of badass amps. So easy and the gain on it is all you need. At least the Joyo logo unscrews and you'd never know it was there. Highly recommended if you are in the market for a mini amp. A 12ax7 in it too,

I've been using a delay pedal in a stereo rig for slab back out of 1 amp with the wet on 100 percent for years now and it's awesome. Even in mono with the right delay mix, its awesome. This ehx pedal seems pretty cool Edit: I would love it if they had put a modulation switch or pot to adjust it in the delayed signal.

@@downloadhistoryproductionsya, you're right. I already use the deluxe memory boy for a ton of stuff (including some magical secret devices in it's effects loop) through my right amp. I'll do the stereo slap back sound using that generally. Then I have a rubberneck going to my left amp. Before both of them is a stereo delay that splits the mono signal. After it splits, both sides go through some different mono pedals before meeting up in a stereo echolution, looper, then ending in a Keeley hydra. I know it's kind of ridiculous how many delay pedals I have on my board, but I'm a fiend! 😝 I do like the idea of having the small slap back echo early in the chain to use as a boost and early echo. Delay into drive pedals can get really weird in an awesome way. Edit: also, I tried to change the deluxe memory boy for a deluxe memory man tt and i just didn't like it as much. Maybe I'm so used to the memory boy because it's been a staple of mine for about 10 years. I just like the repeats on the memory boy more than it's older brother. I do wish I could control blend with an expression pedal on the boy though, but I get away with using the edge of my foot on the knob.

​@Christopher Noia It can be a pretty straightforward conversion to an expression jack if you know the resistance value of the potentiometer of the blend control. If it happens to be 10 k ohms you can use an already available Line6 exp.

@Christopher Noia Here's the deal: you will build an expression pedal from the parts for a Wah pedal, except you do not need the circuit board or the inductor of the wah. An expression pedal is just a potentiometer, 2 wires, and a jack inside the housing of a Wah pedal. That's why you need to know the resistance (in ohms) of the blend potentiometer. Pots for wahs or EXP pedals have a long shaft that a toothed gear slides onto, but they only make the long shaft pots in a few different values. 10k ohms, 25k ohms, 50k ohms, and 100k ohms are the most common. If the pot in your delay has one of those values, it can be easily modded. Just drill and install a quarter inch mono jack, desoldier the pot, run 2 wires from where the pot was from to the jack, then the delaypedal is ready. Install a matching value pot in the Wah pedal case. Run 2 wires from the pot to the 2 spots on the jack. Done! That's it.
