So I have been ill recently. For the last 6 months actually. But I may now be recovering. Perhaps... Anyhow, this is why I haven't been posting drum videos for a while. But I got a request today to post something that demonstrated how loud, or otherwise, an electronic kit is when not amplified.
So here is a short video showing just that.

Dude...thank you so much for taking the time to actually show what an electronic drum kit will sound like to others around you. Every video I've seen showcase the different sounds of drum kits but never focus on their number one selling point...the ability of not making alot of noise. Thank You

Excellent comparison for what the household can expect to hear. They are by no means silent (as I have members in my household still complaining at night) but compared to a regular acoustic kit (that are so loud) these electronic kits are a good alternative. I know you're not the world's number 1 drummer, but you make it look easy and sound good. Keep up the good work.

Hey dude, so is the drumming still bothersome to people living in the house? Im considering getting one kit but that's exactly my doubt as my landlord is 70yo and spends most of her time in the living room next to my room, where I would eventually set up the drums.
@ray_c_yuen
@ray_c_yuen Жыл бұрын

So I had been playing 5 months when I recorded that; I am sure at 5 months you were a much better drummer than I, I have no illusions, but really, when folks are making the effort to learn something new, do try to offer criticism of a constructive nature, eh? (And anyhow, no washboard for me; I don't have the thimbles for it).

So... when I first got the DTXplorer kit I was initially impressed with the drum voices, but over time I started to find them increasingly artificial sounding and lacking in subtlety, especially the cymbals. And so I upgraded to a DTX 500 module and that is a *really* good drum module; lots of voices, more natural sound and much more subtle and responsive. And worked fine with the DTXplorer pads. If you can, you really should upgrade to the DTX 500, you won't be disappointed.

I got both the extra single-zone cymbal pad and the hi hat kit (came with the stand) online from Kraft Music. The cymbal wasn't very expensive but the hi hat was far from cheap. Very nice though and if you are serious, getting a 'proper' hi hat is most likely a worthwhile investment. But at the very least, if you get this kit, get another cymbal pad, it makes a nice difference!
@Jayembee1
@Jayembee1 12 жыл бұрын
@SoundwavePilot As drytaffin rightly says, it's the kick pedal that is the problem. The sticks on the pads just make clicky-clack noises that don't really carry to much. But the kick is pretty loud and I imagine it would sound just like someone stamping repeatedly on the floor if you were to live below it. I know that the kick is the main reason that my g/f gets tired of my playing when she is in the house...

@marc14210 Apologies for the delay in getting back to you, new job and v. busy recently. But yes, the three zone snare and two zone hi-hat work fine with the standard DTX module; just plug 'em in and off you go. As for the third cymbal, there is an input on the back of the kick pad that allows you to attach either a single zone tom or cymbal. It's a weird way to do it, but it works!

Make sure you actually play the kit before you purchase it though. Most music stores let you do that these days. The cheaper kits really feel terrible and are not very durable. Electronic kits are much better now than when they first came out and are improving all the time. Prices have come down too. Good luck.

You can get little rubber drumstick tips for use with Rock Band drums to help reduce the noise a little but I am not sure how they affect the way the sticks play on 'proper' electronic drums, so I would most likely not recommend them. The best thing would be to get a drum kit with mesh pad heads, like a Roland kit. They are *very* quiet. But are also very expensive! :-{

Ah... well. So I had basically the same thing happen; I was in the Guitar Center and had a bit of a bash about on a Roland kit. And about 2 months later I bought a TD-4KX2-S kit. I liked the mesh pads and I loved the cymbal voices. I added a cymbal pad, a new snare and floor tom pad and moved the 8" pads to be toms and now it's a really great kit. I assumed you wanted to stay with Yamaha, but if you can, I would go with Roland; the 15K is the 4K on steroids and if the 4K is great, well...
