This is a great story. Thank you for posting this piece of EP history. The track has a very southern rock sound to it much like Lynyrd Skynyrd.

I hear one song Elvis was supposed to record was "Miss Misunderstood", written by David Bellamy of The Bellamy Brothers, but Elvis died before he could. I learned this in early 1994. I think Elvis would've sounded great singing that. Instead, a country singer by the name of Austin Powers, I'm not joking, recorded it. He's not famous though.

Apparently "Fire" (written by Bruce Springsteen & sung by The Pointer Sisters) was originally written for Elvis.

If only.... I think he was at a crossroads at this point and things could have been great if he sorted all that stuff out. Heard some say that he was planning to take off to Hawaii and rest and try and get healthy again for maybe a year.

I didn't meet Elvis but became friends with Charlie Hodge his confidant and best friend for 8years after Elvis died n he told me mamy stories n I put the in.a large Journal n im I glad. At this time Elvis talked for hours Elvis said he didn't enjoy performing like he did, He was worn out But relaxed singing his best loved gospel. He said many of the guys were not friends as all they wanted was his money cars, trips, Houses, Jewelry etc n you know Elvis he want to keep his gang happy He said when that came out it crushed Elvs he7u8( I'm sure you know who wrote it) He cried n said to Charlie " this is the end of my career n my fans will see me with all my failures etc At the end he said

Outstanding work, Matt! Other than the backing track of “Fire down below “ I’d heard none of this before. It would be interesting to see if any of the tracks you listed for 77 were ever recorded by anyone to get an Idea of how Elvis might have done them.

Loved the video I think it’s great that you’re into Elvis. Do you a video explaining how you became a fan. I became a fan through my Mother when I was 9 yrs old in 1974. I remember when I learned of his passing I was living in NYC when on my way to the bus stop I past a Newsstand and I saw the front page of the NY Daily News. I bought the paper put it in my backpack and headed to school. That night I proceeded to cut the photo spread insert of Elvis and and placed the clippings in my photo album which I still have til this day.

It would have been great if he would have recorded Fire Down Below for sure. It is a rocking demo. I think he probably would have recorded it if he had a world tour or something like that coming up. He would have been motivated for that I’m sure but he was bored with everything because there was nothing else to conquer.

Oh if only he'd recorded Fire Down Below. Elvis would've reinvented himself yet again had he survived 1977 and got into shape. The signs were already there, with Mood Blue and Way Down.

Unfortunately, I read the lyrics after making the video, they weren’t great. Kinda cheesy. The arrangement was cool, but definitely not another Burning Love or Way Down. But agreed, he was making a comeback in 76-77

"Fire down below" was released years ago on a bootleg from the Jungle Room sessions, that I fortunately have. Man I wish E could of recorded it. It's got a good groove and I think E would of had a Hit with it for sure... but I've always thought it was a Bob Segar number, Not Jerry Scheff's ???

Hi Matt, That was great. Thank you for sharing this info. Elvis would have smashed that. What a shame he never recorded it. MATT do you know anything about the story of TTWII when a lady called Bahega gave Elvis a picture she had drawn for him and she asked him a question as he was walking away Elvis said "no sorry I can't do that" do you know what the lady a legibly said to Elvis as there has been a big debate about this for 51 years? Thank you Matt wonderful as always xxx 💝
