Epicurus argued that reading a book or walking in nature can be as pleasurable as drinking too much wine or pursuing carnal desires. You have to stop the habit of being sensitive to the feeling of 'anxiety' itself. Before, when even the smallest levels of anxiety emerged, you may have instantly started to worry and overthink. That was your defense mechanism against anxiety. However, that is the wrong way to react. Even when anxiety emerges, people who are not so sensitive are not really affected. They don’t fear more than they need to. Naturally, they don’t ‘defend’ themselves by overthinking. In other words, they are not susceptible to the vicious loop of overthinking. So when you feel insecure, you can become stronger if you can release the compulsion of getting rid of your anxiety. Re-define what it means to be mentally strong. You are strong not ‘because’ of something, but you are strong ‘despite’ of something.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with pleasure, as long as we apply the Stoic virtues of wisdom & temperance in enjoying them the right way. I love Stoic philosophy & always will, but I must say that Epicurus was also a very wise person who made a lot of sense. Fame is fleeting, while power & wealth are only temporary because you can't hold on to them when you die. And immortality is an illusion that has no basis in any reality. Also to live your life in fear of God (who may or may not even exist) & death is foolish, as it takes away from enjoying the present & not worrying about the future. That in itself goes against the Stoic philosophy of living in the moment that Seneca & others teach us. Really enjoy this channel, the thought provoking topics are much appreciated!

Absolutely you need both in life, but I think very few people are lacking in adversity. Maybe a part of the 1%. We tend to create for ourselves excess stress and anxiety in our lives and end up having to develop coping mechanisms just to get through the week. You made two mistakes at the beginning: Epicurus advocates a simple life, that's true, but he was against wilful and unnecessary asceticism. That's more like what the Cynics taught. The second mistake was saying he didn't care about the traditional virtues. Epicurus was clear that the pleasant life is inseparable from the virtuous life. Otherwise, it was a great video :-)

Thanks for sharing a quality perspective. Quiet the mind to hear the heart, yes indeed.. Nature helps. Diet. Sleep. Exercise. Mindfulness practice. Belly breathing. Music. Visualization. Etc I learned a lot as an athlete. I guess the best lesson for me is practice what works. Emotional regulation takes acute self awareness to catch yourself when the mud gets stirred up to make the water murky. Gotta let the mud settle to see clearly again. And then there are emotions that can be channeled to serve a purpose. Pregame nerves or anxiety becomes alert and ready, anger becomes a relentless effort to compete as long as controlled . Suffering become understanding and compassion when we allow the pain to lead us to its source. Etc etc Emotional intelligence is tricky in the West we’re conditioned to repress or control it too often. Healthy when emotion is based on logical fallacies or physiological stress. Unhealthy when it is based on a legitimate source to serve a purpose. Sometime, simply letting go and not controlling a legitimate emotion while remaking acutely aware to watch where it goes can help us to learn from it, be it suffering turned inside out as anger having never listened to pain to find its source. Or bottling so much stress to appear calm on the outside to manifest itself as physical ailments or never omitting a source of unnecessary stress having denied it’s influence over us. As with everything in psychology the answer is usually it depends ;)

Fast forward said decade it appears that I developed same ideas as Epicurus on my own. The idea of not fearing death because it doesn't matter it can't matter because once it's over it's over. And the idea of peace, I live my life with my capabilities, which by societies standards are bad. I'm borderline hermit from societies perspective. But it is only when I engage into normalcy of society, working extra hours, going out more etc etc that I become unhappy. I'm absolutely fine with humble life, I'm absolute happy to meet with friends for a long, long conversation with a little bit of booz few times in a year instead of going out as much as possible.
