How to Reduce the Pain of Life | Arthur Schopenhauer

The nineteenth-century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer observed that nature is driven by an all-encompassing force, which he called Will, or more specifically, the Will-To-Live. This force is unconscious, aimless, and blind, and gives rise to an insatiable striving within human beings. We live our lives grasping, craving, and attaching ourselves to external things, and we feed on other living organisms to perpetuate our own existence, all of which is a manifestation of Will.
Thus, the will lies at the root of suffering, as our never-ending hunger (and our inability to satiate it) results in an ongoing pursuit of pleasure that never, ever satisfies in the long run. To cope with the misery of life, Schopenhauer took the effort to construct a philosophy to help us attain a state of happiness, which may seem a bit strange as he’s such a pessimistic thinker. But similar to a philosopher and spiritual teacher that lived about 2,500 years ago named the Buddha, Schopenhauer rigorously examined and endured the illnesses of existence before he came up with a cure.
After his death, Schopenhauer left us with an unfinished manuscript titled “Die Kunst, glücklich zu sein,” which can be translated as “The art of being happy”, and contains fifty rules for life. This video is based on the fifty rules by Arthur Schopenhauer, and explores how we can reduce the pain of life.

Everyone, I wish you all the best wishes for 2021! Hopefully, this year will be (as Schopenhauer might have stated it) a bit less painful than 2020. But if that's not the case, we're at least given more opportunities to grow through adversity. In regards to this video, I must admit that there's much more to Schopenhauer's work that I'd like to cover and explore. It was quite difficult to cover his lessons on happiness in one video. If you're interested, I'd like to make more content about his philosophy (and my interpretations of it) in the near future. Just let me know!

Thank you so much for putting this together. I really needed to hear that at this point. Chasing unrealistic dreams for 30 years has given me so much pain because I believed I had failed. That I didn't fulfill my purpose. Yet, I have created my work, my novels, short films etc, so the work exists. Because it is not enjoyed by the masses is out of my control. I still do it because I like to create yet it can be so very frustrating when you cannot find a wide audience when you know the work is good. It's the very thing this video speaks of. I'm trying to find simple joys in reading, listening to music, watching films, and most of all, spending time with my daughter, who has given me real purpose. Without her, I don't believe I would be alive, because I didn't have my head straight. Lost in the idea of failure. And drinking too much. A deadly combination. I've decluttered my life. I try to live as simply as I can. Never been materialistic thankfully. But I still need this reminder though. My biggest battles are within my own head. Peace of mind is all I seek now. And to be healthy long enough to see my daughter grow up.

@@samrat447 Never pay for spiritual guidance. To acheive the state called awakening, you need to synchronise your attention/consciousness to reallity completly, instead of being lost in your thoughts. And you have to do this long enough for your brain to reshape itself into this new mode of fonctioning. A simple meditation technique that focuses on the flow of the breath works perfectly well. And that's all there is to it in my experience. Awakening is litterally just under the nose of humanity, and it is free and simple to do.

Sounds like a pretty desperate optimistic attempt to make all this pain in the world look less horrible. Tell this to a kid, who is starving to death or dying from cancer, this will sound like a very cynical joke. Instead of this desperate approach to relativize the horros of life, I prefer to look at them sober and thus come to the conclusion, that it is better not to have been born at all, no matter what more or less good things may have happened to you, it's still not worth all the trouble.

The way I see it, negative visualization is the best way to attain peace. When you see the things the way they are and how horrible they can be and just shrug it off, you lift a huge burden off your shoulders and attain a sense of calm, regardless of whatever happens.

100% agree. For me negative visualization leads me to more positive thinking. Just recently I read Mediations by Marcus Aurelius. Beginning of book 2 he basically says to himself he knows he will meet lots of bad people. Thing is he won't let them impact him and pull him down. That's how I see any situation that may be negative. I can either let it destroy me or learn from it and keep going.

If you were, like me, born into a body prone to great sadness and pessimism, it's only because it was the condition most suited to propel your growth. That translates perfectly into the way I shaped my way of seeing life. As I was a teenager I used to have many dreams and idealistic images about how my future will be like when I will be older. But I grew up I figured out that some things are unachievable from the situation I am in. Once I gave up to those idealistic thoughts and started to accept the reality as it is, I started being more calm and indifferent about stuff in general. It doesn't translate into me being happy but just trying to have peace of mind. Life sucks and we all know it.

Buddhism is a make-believe "religion" for people who have dropped out of traditional religions but who still want to be part of something that seems like a religion. The Sine Qua Non of any religion is a belef in a Supreme Being, which Buddhism doesn't have, which is very convenient or many people.

The problem here is that back in their time, kids did not have to go to school or could end school at middle school level and still get jobs. Nowadays, even people with no goals in life are forced in debt and 20 years of education for a minimum wage job. To justify putting their kids through this misery, parents will keep telling you that this will make you happy in the future. So by the time you are successful but still miserable that's when you wrap the rope around your neck.

Ahh, I get it now. See, the hamburger is like Wimpy's happiness, he'd rather have it today than some predetermined time in the future. Perhaps Wimpy really did understand the philosophical implications of the self and it's insatiable hunger, but instead decided to continue on his self-destructive path as it is what truly made him happy. And the "future" and all the monetary demands that came along with it didn't matter, they were just constructs of society. One thing was real though, that burger in his stomach.

To truly be abstinent from all wordly joys because they arent actually necessary is the the folly of the righteous, and inconsequential to the truly awakened ones.
