Over the past couple decades, Europeans have infiltrated the NBA and have laid an imprint on the game that'll last forever. Between Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid, these 3 have dominated this generations frontcourt and they aren't the last to come.
With the Houston Rockets lies another European with minimal athleticism at the center position: Alperen Şengün. In a matchup against another fellow future European frontcourt superstar, Victor Wembanyama, Alperen Şengün displayed all skills which European basketball players possess in order to thrive in a game where athleticism is prominent and important. So in today's video, we analyze Alperen Sengun 45 points vs Wemby.

Athleticism is not equal to speed or vertical jump. Sengun is one of the most athletic players in NBA history. He is more flexible than a ballerina, and more agile than kung fu master.

"one of the most athletic players in NBA history." TF? The delusions are real. He's not one of the most athletic players ON HIS TEAM. Let me spell this out. Athleticism is the combination of Speed, Explosiveness, Body Control, Agility and Timing that automatically gives the more "athletic" players an advantage in almost any sport. But in basketball simple physical SIZE and the learned skill of Shooting, can be just as if not more Impactful than athleticism. That's why you will never see someone like Shaq, Sengun or Jokic playing SOCCER. They are too SLOW and heavy. Sengun isn't under any circumstances athletic unless you add conditions, like, "for a 7-footer", and even then he's far closer to Jokic than he is to say Hakeem or D. Robinson. He moves in slow motion but because he's 7 feet and has decent body control and great hands and enough physicality, he definitely impacts the game. His shooting and court awareness pay huge dividends in today's league. His shot is interesting, similar to Jokic and quite effective, which is the only thing that matters. But if you take Sengun's skill-set: shooting, passing and handles, and compare it to someone who is somewhat more explosive and athletic, like Dwight Howard, or even a Daniel Theis, a Sengun will be much more valuable overall. Still searching for the ballerina flex. Maybe you've seen him do yoga. To my eyes for a 7 footer he's doing about what he should be doing in today's WIDE OPEN lane era. Maybe he's overachieving with his shotmaking but these days ANY big who can shoot consistently should be averaging double doubles. And any big who can't shoot better be a helluva defender.

My dude Sengun just dunked on Wemby, he is freakishly athletic. Doncic has a 38 inch vertical. It is not that they are not athletic, they play the game methodically at their own pace.

Doncic struggles to dunk and is slow, thus he has patterned his game on Curry or even a Gilbert Arenas. This shyt ain't new. Slower, less explosive players have always done well in the League when they can shoot and control the pace and spacing. Curry and Bird are the best examples.

What Sengun does so well here is creating a bunch of space with his butt, which is amazing on its own. He is also an incredibly fast spinner, he has probably some of the best balance for a center. He will probably be a more dominant scorer than Jokic.

The thing is not all European players are like Jokic, Şengün and etc. They are like unicorns overcoming all those physical "weaknesses". Let me ask you this, how many centers do you remember having the same level handles with both hands and plus the footwork like Şengün? Isn't that also a physical attribute?
@williamdavis9562
@williamdavis9562 4 ай бұрын
His speed, acceleration and agility are also physical attributes. People have athleticism completely tied into how high you can jump. Which is odd because athleticism has many many components. I wouldn't call Al. P an athletic player as the number one explanatory word on his profile. But I would say he does have very specific athletic abilities which should be noted.

Just his role has been changed in Houston and he must do defense more than before so he needs to keep his energy that's why playing like classic no athleticism European hooper. But reality is different. Just watch his old matches as i say✌️

There are 10 components to athleticism. Strength - the ability to create force Speed - the ability to minimize the time cycle of a given movement Power - the ability to create maximal force in minimal time Mental Resilience - the ability to push yourself out of your comfort zone Aerobic Capacity - the maximal amount of physiological work that an individual can do as measured by oxygen consumption Anaerobic Capacity - the maximal work performed during maximum-intensity short term physical effort Balance & Coordination - the ability to perform movements with precision and grace Agility - the ability to be nimble on your feet and move quickly from one movement pattern to another Stability - the ability to prevent movement in one part of the body while creating movement in another, thus protecting vulnerable areas Mobility - flexibility in motion, the range of motion through muscles and joints

I think the Rockets should give up on Jalen Green and build a team around Sengün. Jalen is very talented but he won't be a franchise player and he doesn't want to be a role player. Alpi is truly a little Jokic. Just give him players like Aaron Gordon and Jamal Murray. 😊

if you jalen green the right vets, environment, and opportunity to make mistakes, he can be great. but today’s game doesn’t care about those things that are needed to help develop a player like jalen green

@@pattdor7 I support player development. Houston already wasted a lot of time with Silas. But Jalen Green is developing really slowly, also Alpi and Jalen have been playing together for 3 years but they are not well compatible. I think the Rockets will have to choose between Sengun and Jalen in the coming years. The connection between FVV and Sengün is very effective even though it is only in its first year. But I don't see a future for the Alperen and Jalen partnership. Unfortunately Jalen Green must accept his role on the team or he will ruin his potential… What do you think about that?

7 footers don't have to be explosive or athletic. But in this NBA Era of wide open lanes, the bigs who can shoot and handle a bit are lethal. Sengun is executing the new style of big quite well. Expect more multi-dimensional bigs thanks to the Curry Revolution.

It has been shown over and over again that foreign players are a lot less likely to sell out a good situation they're in chasing a few extra bucks. They're not as stupid or as short sighted as the young American players we've recently raised. If he makes a big splash in the playoffs next year and carries the team and the Rockets make him a fair offer, he'll probably take it.

if you find same positions and make a comparisson EU vs US you make people understand more. For example Bitim, who is also a Turkis EU player in NBA, I watche him and made fun of him as ''is he playing for his highschool? What a weird defencing tactic'' bıt he was a good deffender in that game. Something doesn't make sense in US basketball and US basketball seems to take more europeans to make this game better (or competable).

@@KnoxWheelerJr I see a lot of European players much more athletic than American players. You guys call Doncic non athletic but name me a guard that can move him? @@faubourglincoln I don't necessarily agree with the way it's used. Jokić has insane coordination, can basically place a ball wherever he wants and dance around anybody in the paint while being as strong as Adams. That's elite athleticism. But y'all know what he means

@@faubourglincoln There is more to what you're explaining than athleticism. You'd think the answer to your question would be obvious. Athleticism is great but isn't the end all be all to success in this league. Luka is athletic in his own right in some ways and lacks athleticism in other ways, so no one would really claim athleticism is one of his strong suits as a player. But the other skills he has (just as important if not more important than athleticism) are where has freakish abilities in, abilities which allow him to dominate the way he does.
