There was a tendency that lasted almost a decade in anitube, which involved creators giving up, waving their hands in defeat and saying everything that could be said about Eva already had been said. Thankfully, the new generations have taken the task those anitubers rejected in stride, be it from having more confidence in their own voices or not having been around at all for the original rounds of discussion, and I am really excited to see what else we can learn from this tale that's almost as old as myself.

Episode 12 is my favorite of the series. To me, it’s a perfect example of how sublimely theatrical the staging of the show can be. The kids have to catch a literal meteor falling from heaven. The action is gorgeously and smoothly animated and breathlessly exciting. But moments of reflection, introspection, and recollection are threaded throughout, not in ways that interrupt the flow of the action, but in moments of natural, genuine solitude and quiet. To me, this is the moment when the show telegraphs its hard left emotional turn from cool sci fi shonen series to existential nightmare. You can feel the darkness creeping in at the edges. The moments of levity are more muted, and are becoming further and farther between. And all the reveals, like Misato’s, are foreshadowing something awful just around the corner. Great video, as always. And oh god, the hand symbolism…the horror (and tenderness) waiting in the wings…
@timberw0lfstudios Жыл бұрын
Dude, I cannot wait to continue unwrapping this series. For me, I think the whole of Act III is the setup of the existential nightmare, and it's such a beautiful deterioration into abstraction. 1:47 It would not be improper to think that. Also, nice, I never knew that book existed 2:07 Bro literally every fic I've ever read called it that. No big deal 2:44 Nice intro. Sounds HOME-like 3:57 I was quite surprised when I found out! It's not as noticeable to one whose main anime experience was Ghibli and Pokémon and for whose NGE was the first Gainax production they saw 5:13 I was quite confused here. Later canon would justify this a lot. Sorry fof lack of insight in these, I have campaign drain 5:49 The fact that he has that tic because of his injury in the second fight is amazing. I absolutely love how they use it all across his character. Best kind of Achey Scars I ever saw outside of prose 6:51 It's much easier to say for a Spanish speaker. Try saying it like Matador, but with the soft Ra for Razor and the -el you have been using for the last episodes 8:08 I missed these so much. This is a great episode 8:36 In The Still Darkness is an episode I wish more people rewatched. It really indicates how competent and courageous the pilots are despite their flaws, and how Gendo, while still a notoriously despicable and emotionally stunted villain, is still determined and, in a way, confident in his son's ability to carry out the plan. Writing Gendo without making him as bad as SEELE has been a consistent hurdle in the fics I've read. And here I just LOVE the shot at the cages. 9:27 I only caught that on my reaatch 2 years after the fact. I jad misunderstood this line. It's SO GOOD! 10:27 Honestly this episode is extremely underrated compared to, say, Leliel's. Shows more than the rest that the battle is not the draw. Soooo gooood 11:26 I know it's short-lived, but that made me almost proud, and as you know I dislike her tsking the spotlight from.Rei due to Anno's lack of ideas for further Rei development. Still, this is a great moment. 13:27 Hilarious. Yeah, that's NOT the kind of extra prescence I would wish for the crew 15:10 This series is so good. I have enjoyed other series of it's style more, at some points, unlike Breaking Bad, but damn it's just so artistically made! 16:09 As someone who dislikes all parties that are not in this style, I really appreciate her caring when Shinji can't enjoy even this small one. Love it. 17:19 I agree. I understand why Rei would,but I have seen few war heroes with that kind of ferrous confidence. Doesn't look cheesy at all on the first watch. 17:36 One of the best individual shots so far and that's saying something 22:32 You'll always have it. Thanks

I personally find it creepy to bring in a side character with very little in the way of development at this point to serenade a group of children alone in the wilderness. 13:17 I may have an idea as towhat the purpose of the scene was. It’s confirmed in lore that Shigeru’s a nihilist character. I think Anno’s idea was to display that even though someone can completely deny the search for meaning (nihilism incarnate), it’s not impossible for them to rejoice and display happiness for their survival. Idk maybe I’m reading too far into a side character. It does make sense that it would be removed for tonal consistency, but the idea does sort of explain itself. Especially when considering the “developing” previous shot. Arising from a gutter certainly doesn’t seem like a simply stylistic choice, especially if you consider the proposed scene.

Another thing I'll add to Rei's self reflection. Not only is her assertion that the "her inside her that is different" a sign that she's starting to define herself as a person, it's also a hint that her soul does not match her body, and that's further cemented by the shot of Eva 01 who we know is in an inverse of this soul-body disconnect. That is, Eva 01 is Yui's soul in Lilith's cloned body, as opposed to Rei who is Lilith's soul in Yui's cloned body.

For episode 14, not only does Asuka bothering Shinji reveal in subtext what the Evangelions actually are, but it also reflects on Asuka's growing jealousy over Shinji, given how Shinji saying Eva 00 "smelled like Ayanami" seemed to her "perverted." I.e. she's suspicious of a sexual attraction between them and wants in on that before anyone.

I haven't commented for a while, because I quit KZbin in June of this year, but I have slowly been coming back to see videos here and there at, hopefully, a more moderated level. I am commenting from this account because I made my first AMV and am shamelessly hoping that more people watch it. Anywho, this is another amazing analysis video. I cannot sing its praises enough. Having rewatched the series and End of Eva for the third time all the way through this past summer, I found myself once more seeing and appreciating new aspects of the story that I never noticed on my first or second watch. I always discounted the episodes 10 through 14 as being the weakest and most lackluster parts of the series, and this time around, I appreciated specifically 12 as being surprisingly better than I remembered it. I still thought of the others as being devoid of substance and weaker than the rest of the show on a technical as well as literary level. Watching the last video, you unfortunately didn't quite change my mind about Magmadiver, however this one certainly turned me around on my opinion of episode 11. Your drawing attention to the editing and technical mastery of the shots made me realize the skill that went into the episode. I didn't ever give the character moments in that episode as much weight as you seem to give every sliver of time we spend on them, and I never assigned a direct meaning to the clenching hand motif, (I noticed it as a motif, but never realized its meaning as confidence). Once again, your video makes me glad to be a fan of this show and I'm excited to see what comes next. Your videos always make me appreciate the show more than I could ever dream. Thank you.
@timberw0lfstudios Жыл бұрын
I agree Magmadiver is the weakest link of the series, but I'm glad I was able to turn you around on EP 11! While that one isn't a favorite of mine personally, there is a significant level of craftmanship and storytelling that sets up later arc progressions in a special way. Dude, your videos are top tier, I love your shot breakdowns. I often remember Evangelion as having... Lots of still shots of kids on elevators. I'm happy to be reminded that it's got amazing animation, and Anno's style and creativity have always impressed me. Other commenters have made mention of how Eva discourse online has become stale [your material excluded], and I think that staleness has infected my view of the series a little - it still holds up, and it holds up better than most people give it credit for. I'm so glad to get a breath of fresh air, returning to Eva through your analysis videos. Very well done! Tangential, but there's a series of long videos about Star Wars that remind me of your work with Eva, called "the prequels are better than you deserve." They're quite long, but the analysis of the film craft that's gone into those films is truly top-rate. If anyone wants similar content, or if you'd like to have a look at something similar that someone else's produced, check them out. They refreshed my view of Star Wars, breaking me out of the fugue of the crap discourse that exists in that space too.

Never clicked the like button this fast before. Really cool analysis. A few ideas came to mind while watching. In the scene from episode 11 where Shinji contacts his father, I don't think I ever interpreted things as Gendo being slightly more receptive/available to his son. I mean yes, he does answer the phone, but did he realize ahead of time it was Shinji calling him? Not sure if caller ID was a thing yet in 1995 (or the fictional world of post 3I A.D. 2015), but Shinji used a public payphone instead of the cellphone Misato issued to him. Then again, maybe he first dialed NERV's general switchboard and identified himself as the Third Child, asking to be connected to Commander Ikari's office (perhaps that's not a very important detail). Still IIRC, the overall content of the conversation was that Shinji's school was conducting parent/teacher meetings and he was notifying Gendo in order to request his participation. I guess the element of that scene which tends to grab my attention was how, despite his abandonment, Shinji still somehow views Gendo as a legitimate parent. Then just prior to the line going dead, his father seemingly rejects this potential olive branch by responding that he already delegated all such parental obligations to his official guardian, Misato. Gendo's willingness to get his hands dirty while assisting support personnel to manually prepare the Eva's for deployment suggests he indeed has faith in the Children's determination and resourcefulness to reach the bowels of NERV in time to intercept Matarael. Also, his brief verbal "pat on the back" to Shinji near the end of episode 12 after he played a primary role in catching and destroying Sahaquiel, demonstrates that he's certainly not above giving credit where it's due. However, I find it rather telling that both of these examples specifically revolve around the advancement of Gendo's personal agenda/scenario. The fact that he has zero feedback (positive or otherwise) to offer Shinji in regards to the fairly successful balancing of his academic and domestic responsibilities with all of the heavy demands simultaneously being placed upon him by NERV, just demonstrates how little interest or involvement he has in son's living situation/overall well-being. We never get anything remotely approaching, "Hey Shinji, heard that you were able to make some friends after a pretty rough start at your new school. That's good news." "Just wanted to say thanks for giving up your field trip and sticking around to help us hunt for kaiju embryo. Shows signs of maturity that you were studying and getting caught up on homework while the rest of your class was on vacation." Or even something as simple as, "Still keeping up with cello practice these days? Way to go." Even if Gendo were actually trying to take baby steps toward mending fences with his son, by focusing solely on his performance as a pilot, it comes off feeling somewhat hypocritical, if not manipulative. For that reason (among others), I wish Shinji felt a bit more conflicted about receiving any words of praise from his father. Like, given Gendo's extremely poor track record up to this point, Shinji questions whether he should put any stock in what his father has to say. Another way I thought Shinji could've possibly expressed an element of his reasoning behind continuing to pilot would tie back in with the major chip he still carries on his shoulder. In holding on to how worthless his father made him feel for so long, he now wants to excel in his role beyond all expectations. To prove to his father once and for all that he was flat out wrong to ever abandon him to begin with, to show everyone how his father underestimated him. Granted, that sort of attitude might sound a little out of character for Shinji (at least before his short-lived, kiss-related confidence boost toward the end of episode 15), but I can't help wonder if he and Asuka might've found themselves oddly bonding over a decidedly more revenge/grudge-based mission statement.

I couldn't agree with everything you said more. I think you're right on the money, especially with Gendo and Shinji's relationship. As Shinji is waiting for the line to connect in Episode 11 (as opposed to hearing it ring out), it's heavily implied he was routed to Gendo's office via operator by a private line, so Gendo definitely knew it was his son calling. I'm very excited to continue covering the series, and their relationship in particular, as it takes a drastic turn in the next act. Thank you for all your feedback and the support! It means the world!

I forgot to address another point that you mentioned. Namely, how Asuka has two really exceptional character moments in these episodes. The first is the way she steps up during the fight against Matarael. While Gendo definitely contributed in getting the Eva's prepped for launch, it was Asuka who basically assumed Misato's role as Operations Director in quickly assessing the situation, devising and implementing a plan of attack that offered the highest chances of success. Moreover, I think this was actually the very first time all three Eva's sortied together, so that elevated the degree of difficulty. She probably deserved a pip on her collar or something for the way she kept a cool head and acquitted herself in the field. The other example was her willingness to compromise and adjust the group's dinner plans in the aftermath of defeating Sahaquiel. Instead of putting her foot down and demanding that Misato keep her promise to splurge on an expensive restaurant, she found a much more budget-friendly Ramen stand, which also offered a vegetarian option for Rei. This might've been her best demonstration of maturity in the entire series. By taking the high road, she navigated what could've devolved into an argument and managed to turn it into a team-building exercise. When viewed in conjunction with the decision to forego writing a will prior to battle, one could even interpret it as a pretty sweet humblebrag (if I'm using that term correctly). It's as if Asuka is basically declaring, "I'm so confident in my (team's) abilities that I totally expect us to go out there and get the job done, to the point where it's not really worth making such a big deal out of it at the end of the day with a fancy celebration." I'm getting a little ahead of myself, but I think that's just one of the reasons why I find the fight against the 13th Angel/Bardiel/Unit-03 so incredibly frustrating. What happened to Asuka's take charge attitude during that episode? With Misato out of commission, she needed to assume command on the battlefield and suggest a better alternative strategy than Gendo's, "OK, forget about superior numbers. Everybody spread out and just let yourselves be taken down one at a time." Granted, the emotional tone of the show had taken a turn by that point, and I guess Anno wanted things to play out in a more tragic manner, but that shouldn't necessarily translate to characters suddenly and unrealistically forgetting previously demonstrated skills. It probably would've taken more time and cost more money to animate, but we've already seen post-Ramiel that Shinji knows how to rip armor panels off an Eva's back and gain access to the entry plug without injuring the pilot. There should've at least been an attempt made where Asuka and/or Rei try to engage Unit-03, while Shinji approaches from behind to physically remove Touji's entry plug. I readily admit that I've read more than a few fanfics over the years, so I tend to consider different ways things could've played out. The fact that we didn't get much of a variation on this sequence in the second Rebuild film still irks me.
@timberw0lfstudios Жыл бұрын
All great points, although I will dispute the happenings of Bardiel's engagement. The three Evas were arranged in a triangular ambush position, and failed because they were distracted and misinformed. All of them believed a Children was within, despite Gendo's saying otherwise and assuming the Children was deceased. Rei and Shinji both hesitated to engage, leading to Bardiel's advantage. It's definitely worth thinking about though, and I appreciate the feedback! I'm excited to cover more of the series (Episode 18 especially).

The power outage was definetly caused by SEELE. The timing of the angel arriving is too convenient. (1) Only SEELE would know enough about angels (beside NERV) to predict when one would assault Tokyo-3 or send it their way themselves. (2) The angel is realtively weak, even the JSDF could've defeated it, the AT field was so weak that Shinji only needed to unload his rifle. So SEELE wanted to probe NERV to further their goals, thus they timed the angel attack with their sabotage of its power system, but making sure the angel can't possibly destroy the HQ because they still need Gendoh and the Evas.

I was a bit surprised for the hiatus, you started this series with a lot of energy, but we all need breaks. And now there's more original animation, nice! We really need videos like these as the average anime enjoyer knows basically nothing about the arts. We need to be told that Episode 11 has impressive editing and why, cuz who knows that kind of stuff. Not that that would be all these videos offer. I personally was so invested in hating Gendo for being such a bad father that I didn't actually notice that he isn't the SAME bad father all the while, that he actually improves for just a smudge. Oh and I think the Japanese dub did a pretty good job overall in pronuncing Seele per the original German /ˈzeːlə/, and Japanese isn't even remotely related to German, while English is, rather closely! There I found a fault lol! Great video, keep up the good work!

The whole "learning to lead" arc for Asuka in Episode 11 is iconic (enough so that Amagi Brilliant Park pretty much stole it for their rain episode). It also likely borrows a lot from "Big Trouble in Little China" with Asuka filling in for Jack. The whole "kicking the door open" bit could be a riff on "we may be trapped.." (Gainax have shown a familiarity with Carpenter's work, so this isn't a big stretch). Also noted, how Asuka is "feeling her way" into being the leader (at first to the detriment of the whole enterprise), then snaps into the role as things go off script. I'm not sure how much of being the defense is "getting even" with Shinji and how much is her accepting that the leader takes on the biggest risks, in contrast to unpleasant chores (like cranking doors) which she will leave to Shinji in a heartbeat. This also sets up episode 16, when Shinji takes her bait and decides he's ready to walk point, even though Asuka and Misato realize that isn't a good idea. The trajectory of the "taking the kids out" bit is instructive. Both Shinji and Asuka, immediately see how patronizing and ridiculous getting taken out for dinner for saving the world is (for once they are on the same page). Asuka however, may think it's stupid, but NO WAY are they going to get away with not delivering on a promise (and starts looking for the BEST place in town). Then, she lets Misato down gently (did she talk it out with Shinji? I suspect she at least TOLD him). THEN she orders the most expensive stuff at the cart (shark fin ain't cheap, and she specifies "large portion") just to show she should not be taken for granted. This arc is also where the standard Shinji/Asuka dynamic shows up. Asuka will poke Shinji until he reacts, then she usually backs off. Misato has a lot of patience, but Asuka can't tolerate passive aggression. She doesn't seem to much mind WHAT Shinji thinks about something (or whether he's supporting her) as that he HAS feeling and opinions about what they are going through. She's always poking him, but backs off once he shows he HAS an opinion.
@timberw0lfstudios Жыл бұрын
All very good points, wonderfully elaborated, and I think I agree with you on pretty much everything. What happens in Episode 11 has huge ramifications for what transpires later, in Episode 16 particularly. Thank you for all the feedback! I always subconsciously connected with Shinji’s plight. It has to do with the fact that he’s forced to do Eva stuff even though his mental state tells us he should be doing literally anything else. He needs to take some depression naps and frolic in a field, but he can’t do that. He’s got work to do. The monotonous nature of everyday life really makes no room for mental illness. It’s a real flaw with SOCIETY. You can’t just not go to work or school. Poor Shinji has to do BOTH! I didn’t realize him and I had that in common until I thought about the show some more. There’s probably a lot more elements of life in this show disguised as sci fi stuff. I do wonder why sci fi in particular was chosen for this story. It may be as simple as the creators just like drawing robots, aliens, and explosions. Maybe it’s because sci fi is popular in anime, mech shows especially. The tendency of science fiction to be overly esoteric and alienating (aliens haha) is a good fit for a show about a morose kid that nobody bothers to help out. I’ll admit that. I think Hideaki Anno described Evangelion as “his life.” I was initially put off by this, but it’s a bit more reasonable the more I think about it. It’s art. Of course it’s his life. Nothing in Evangelion literally happened to Anno the same way Starry Night didn’t literally happen to Van Gogh. Both artworks were made to get out a feeling. People don’t have to pilot Evas in real life, but we all gotta go through high school. Many of us end up working infuriating, soul-crushing jobs at some point. Evangelion works because it takes unrealistic genre tropes and uses them to communicate realistic feelings. It’s special I think.
@timberw0lfstudios5 ай бұрын
Absolutely. I think most great sci-fi stories are just human stories against a sci-fi setting. Giants robots and aliens and explosions hold interest, but it takes something true and meaningful to center a story, especially one like Evangelion.
