Great advice, Michael! When I help people get their license I always give them the same three steps, although in a different order: 1) Schedule your test, even if you are not ready for it. Having the test on the calendar will give you that extra pressure to study. 2) Download an app, spend 30-45 minutes a day minimum going through flashcards with the goal memorizing the question pool. Do not worry about fully grokking the content, just memorize memorize memorize. While the pool seems large, at just over 400 questions, many of them are simple rewordings of the same questions. The daily study time doesn't have to be all in one chunk. I recommend people just pull out their phone for 5-10 minutes at a time when they are in the bathroom, on the bus, waiting in a line, laying in bed, etc. By doing that, it's typically quite easy to create the required study time without even realizing it. Give yourself at least 4 or 5 days of study before your exam. You should set a goal of passing practice exams at a level of 80% or higher after 4 or 5 days - this means you are ready for the exam. If your exam is still days or weeks away, you can throttle back your studying and just focus on running one or two practice exams each day until your exam. This will keep the information fresh. 3) Take the test, pass, and take the General exam which the testers will very likely offer up right away. It doesn't matter that you haven't studied for it, much of the content is the same as the Technician exam and you may just luck out and get the license class upgrade on the same day. If you fail General, big deal, you still have a Technician license and if you decide to go for an upgrade in the future, you have already gotten a free taste of the exam. Then of course, there's the most important step: 4) GET ON THE AIR! This is where the real learning starts. The tests do not actually teach or test you about practical use of the radio. This is only learned by getting yourself on the air and using your new equipment! Congrats on getting your license Michael! I'll catch you on the radio one of these days! 73 de K7XPO OB #3553

Congratulations on your license. If we make a small count we would have the following device on our board or close to it: Radios (Ham, CB and in some cases a scanner), 2 tablets (one with the navigator another with the data of the car, cell phone, Spot (or another with similar features), switches for off road lights, etc. It would be interesting to see some setup that some people already have to know their initiatives.

HAM Radio is fantastic. I have had license for 28 years. Also when you get your license, something you should do is study on how to use your so you radio so you don't cause interference to other HAMs. Remember there are a lot more HAMs out there who aren't part of your group. Congratulations & Have Fun N7TWU John

Thank you Michael for putting this out there! Thank you for adding that last bit of information about learning how to properly conduct yourself on Ham frequencies. Congratulations on getting your ham license. The Technician license is ok, but the General license is much better. You can use the ARRL app. To study for both class of licenses, a lot of the questions on the General test are very similar to the Technician test just a little more in depth. You can take both tests the same day first the Technician, pass it then take the General. Good luck to those going to take your tests. AG7KU

Memorize. Word association not study. Read question then ONLY the right answer for all questions 3-4 times in one day. Take the test the next day. 35 question multiple choice 26 correct to pass. Never look at an incorrect answer. Great suggestions, just add only looking at correct answers. It’s not about leaning HAM radio, it’s about getting 26 of 35 correct. Also take Tech & General test consecutively on the same day. Echo Papa PrepperNet Asheville City Lead See you’ll at Overland East!

Thanks for the video, however I'm still confused about a few things. Does this type of license give you the ability to use other types of radios also? I have gone to the FCC website before and nothing really makes sense. There's so many different licenses to apply for, which one is best? What is the difference between this type and a GMRS license? Or are they the same?

GMRS you just pay a fee and it is separate from this. GMRS is a fine radio, but few have it (I’m one).

GMRS is terrific and many of us have both ham and GMRS licenses. GMRS has some power and capabilities limitations that really make amateur radio much more functional. It’s absolutely worth it. Regarding radios, Yaesu, Kenwood, and Icom all make great gear. I’m a Yaesu guy and I love my gear. I have the FTM-400 and it’s awesome. I love being able to use Fusion and get digital voice quality with distance and bearing to other radios on the LCD.

Very limited repeater availability, UHF only, and limited equipment setup. HAM gives you up to 1,500 watts legal across many more frequences (although mobile setups are usually 50-100 watts, but are VHF, UHF, and HF). Sure, there's a test, but the test is either free or under $20. GMRS license is another tool to throw in, but don't compare it as an alternative to HAM, it's not even close.
