The biggest lesson for me from factory games: sometimes, it's best to walk away from the big mess you made while you were still figuring out the game, and sometimes it's best to knuckle down and spend a few hours fixing the mess. i.e. A new Save gives you the chance to start fresh with all you've learned, but you'll have to wait a while to reach the level you made it to last time. I've found those new saves good for clearing burnout, getting creative and reconnecting with the passion. But after a few dozen hours I always come back to my core save, tidy up all the messy, rushed jobs, finally build aesthetic buildings around my levitating factory floors, and then pick up where I left off on the Milestones. Knowing whether to start fresh, or follow through has been a tough one for me. In the end, it's this: don't think about how hard it will be... think about how fun it will be! If it'll be more fun to start again, go for it, but be prepared to accept that if you keep doing that you'll never reach the Mastery level.
@JoshuaGanoTyraxLightning4 ай бұрын
Also, imho there's no shame in playing a Dummy Log first that's just used to try to learn the game first and is never designed to ever last or get attached to, especially on ones with no or not good enough Tutorials, then when one feels ready, abandon it to start your actual REAL Game Log. :) (This can be especially useful a Strat when playing Games that are still in Alpha...) Also, never get used to any Game Log/Game World made in a game at any point in time before that game's Full Release. IMHO ANYTHING made in a game any time before Full Release should be regarded and treated as if it is Non Canon.

I am currently obsessed with Satisfactory, previously obsessed with Factorio. The downside to factory games is the tedium, which is also part of the allure. However in Satisfactory when things get overly intricate, I can always go exploring, find hard drive, be cosmetic, go for a ride, or just sit up high and admire the world and what I created. I enjoy watching other people play and admire their handiwork. It is incredible the creativity some people have, like you for instance. Thanks for posting.

Additional points, in no particular order: * Games like this also tend to be real good at being a very effective form of "Rags to Riches" style fun. * Some of these kinds of games can be fun to play when one is in the mood for this kinda game and action &/or Combat. (Factorio easy example.) * Games like this can be fun and relaxing to play while one might be the kinda Player that enjoys carnage and destruction, including but not limited to "Diggy Diggy Hole" kinds. (I myself totally fit this bill!) * Creative Building opportunities kinda fun works for Legos, and it works for games like this. :) * Some of these kinds of games can be fun to play when one is in the mood to just chill and relax and one is in no mood to worry about being serious about anything, especially things like 'time tables' and 'timers' and such, and one just wants to mosey at a relaxed pace and maybe even take a break from the main game loop and just do something for just fun, like an aesthetic 'just for fun' build, or just casually experiment around with stuff, or such. 'Lizard Doggo Petting Zoo', for example. :)

Having played Satisfactory for over 3,000 hours, I share your love of building the efficient factory and then making it look great. To me the key is that there is no real cost if you get it wrong. I've built factories over and over again to refine the process. Bring on 1.0!

For me, the factory bug began with Minecraft's "Logistics PIpes" mod, buildcraft, and industrialcraft. Fully modded Minecraft became very much a sort of Satisfactory Lite a decade ahead of its time. Then it was Factorio for the full-blown experience. Satisfactory is basically Factorio Lite with first person and beautiful scenery.

Great summary of why these games hook us! I've just recently gotten into factory games (Satisfactory, about 400 hrs played) after spending well over 1000 hrs in Valheim. While it certainly is satisfying to build an efficient factory producing something I need, it can also be quite daunting to plan it all out. Sometimes, I just want to explore and kill things, especially since my job requires a lot of thinking, planning, and troubleshooting and I'm not needing that endorphin hit afterwards. But when I DO get the building bug, it's WAY too easy to stay up until 3am finishing the final pieces of a factory and troubleshooting why the lines aren't running smoothly. If Satisfactory 1.0 and Valheim: Ashlands get released near each other, I'm sure I'll be in geek-heaven, bouncing between the two depending on what kind of challenge I want.

I was actually thinking about this very topic today as I try to brainstorm ideas for a basic game loop. I like the combination of scalable objectives of the factory genre (introduce new items composed of existing items, gate unlocking via automation checks), along with the builder game loop which allows the player to choose their own constraints such as artistic expression, logical efficiency, redundancy, robust recovery from extreme inputs, aesthetics, and so on. But factory games seem overdone or overrepresented as a genre. There are masterpieces already. But such games might appeal more to males than females, and also heavily tech-centric. So I'm thinking of an idea that is more nature-centered and possibly psychologically based. Sure, there may be math or tech based puzzles, but I kind of want to explore the idea of building relationships in a population and maximizing the health of an ecosystem. Maybe terraform a planet ravaged by a FIXSIT employee back to a diverse ecosystem with a population of quirky people that you somehow learn to get the most use and happiness out of. idk, just spitballing ideas. I'm using GDX and building entirely on Android for now. I get a basic splash screen with a custom font, color, size, position right now. Taking some inspiration from ThinMatrix and Juice Velvet to just try and learn enough of the API to manifest some ideas.

I want to throw out modded Minecraft since it fits well within the factory niche. Java Edition of Minecraft has some of the best factory modpacks that you can play. Packs like All the Mods, Skyfactory, Stoneblock, FTB Skies, All of Fabric and so on, are all automation plays using not only hard resources, but soft resources as well such as farming. There isn't a single factory game, Satisfactory included, and I love Satisfactory, that has the depth of some of these well-crafted modpacks. You think Satisfactory is challenging? Try setting up the automation for the Mekasuit in the Mekanism mod. That is a challenging and interesting progression loop. Almost all of them have an end goal as well, so you aren't just making stuff to make stuff. All the Mods modpack, for example, has the ATM Star as its goal, and it is very challenging. And on Java Edition, the modpacks are free. There are literally thousands of modpacks available. Just browse Curseforge. Need I add that you can also build? It is Minecraft.

I agree with everything you said. However, I do want to also throw out that factory-based Minecraft mods aren’t designed to be scaled. So, it’s still fun to progress in those modpacks, but games like Factorio and Satisfactory hit the sweet spot for making the factory grow.

I've played them all, but I do keep coming back to satisfactory. For me, I feel like satisfactory is a master in game design - it's really multiple games in one, with each phase bringing new transportation and power options. The early game, 1st part of the game, is about early automation and self-feeding bio power. The second part of the game is about coal, and having to go further afield - although still relatively local - with trucks (usually for steel) a big change from just using belts. The third part is trains, and starting to work around an entire region - maybe popping into a new region for Oil and fuel power. The last phase is the global automation, where you need the last elevator items, you have multiple flying options with drones and jet/hover packs, and really require factories across the map, and the ultimate power generation: Nuclear. Each part is distinct, but also fun in it's own way.

There's something in the book 'Shopcraft as Soul Craft' about the problems with a lot of modern work, that the goals are too ambiguous to be satisfying. If a team did "better" it's not always clear how, and everyone gets a participation award. For an electrician, either the light comes on when the switch is flicked, or it doesn't. For a machinist, the cam shaft is either the correct dimensions, or it's not. For Satisfactory, either the belts move, or they don't.

Also, to answer question, I love SF over TT because I prefer being above ground and seeing the sun, feeling rain, air, hearing the sounds in a jungle or desert, whereas TT I felt claustrophobic and sad to be trapped underground. Both games are very well made. I also like the cleaner, larger, more angular style of SF machines as well as natural color pallete vs TTs smaller, everything-neon color palette and smaller, rounded machines. For me, both game loops seem fun, but the style is a huge difference. Other people like both styles equally, or TT style more. It is funny how much style preference and importance can vary from one person to another. I like the 1st or 3rd person view of both SF and TT whereas I strongly dislike the top-down view on games like Factorio, DSP, and others. I love the survival genre but mostly (95%) for the building aspect, and 5% for the "I built all this with one hand while fending off dragons with the other" sense of accomplishments. But gathering mats by hand, I don't want a monotonous grinding game loop. That's so 1980s and I'm over it.

I start with DSP (260h) but it was my first Factory Game and so after a few unproductives starts I only copy (and try to improve) blueprints I find online. At the beginning, I also really like playing on a non-euclidian grid but it ended up being a pain. I then play Techtonica (170h), designing my own factory. Unfortunately not a lot of replayability and also no logic block at all (And no blueprints). I then switch to Desynced but I'm a Conveyor belt lover and I only start to enjoy it when I design an almost bot-less factory that emulate Conveyors belts. And my favorite one is Astrocolony (500h). I really like designing modular platforms that can be docked/undocked, and so I don't have to destroy a significant part of my factory when I want to upgrade it. I also give a shot to Hydroneer (100h), really great game for logic elements but not as satisfying as other factory games (You don't craft parts of your factory, your factory only convert ore into coins that you use to buy everything, and no storage). Currently playing Final Factory, similar to Astrocolony for modular platforms (You have to build this way, because every build cost stability). I try Factorio, I really don't like the design. My next one will probably be Satisfactory or Foundry. I also heard about the Crust and Automation Station coming in 2024

The actual amounts consumed per operation still has to be reviewed on the recipe page separately though.

It's tough to put into words so hopefully I can do a good job. I like games like this because I feel like I live in it. Something about going out and coming back "home" really does it for me. Fallout 4 and Skyrim have similar gameplay loops but I love Fallout 4 and hate Skyrim. Why? There's no home in Skyrim. You're a magical murder machine 24/7 and that's it. For me, that completely destroys the loop because there doesn't seem to be a "loop" at that point. It's more of a straight line. DO THIS THING UNTIL THE GAME IS OVER. Same with Elden Ring. DO THIS THING. Now yes you can argue.... but that's Satisfactory. Gather resources and automate. But going out to get resources and coming back home with them.... that feels like the loop for me. That's the completion of the cycle. Fallout 4. Go out into the wasteland, find things, come home. Loop / cycle complete. Begin again. Skyirm, kill kill kill kill kill kill kill kill kill game over.... It's like bowling. Pins come up, knock them down, repeat. If a bowling game never ended.... that would be all that you do.... knock pins down, knock pins down, knock pins down. That doesn't do anything for me. So, I don't know what that feeling is called but I really like games where you go out and come home. Fallout4, Dyson, Astroneer, Satisfactory, Valheim, Deep Rock, Hell Divers 2.... I love going out, doing what needs to be done, and coming back home.

I love factory games, especially Factorio. However lately i've lost the flame for it and i don't know why. Maybe because i have only tried out a few of them - Factorio, Shapez (1) and Mindustry come to mind immediately. I know that Factorio is just way too good and i'm waiting for the new DLC coming October, but until then i've been exploring how to make mods for it in order to make it interesting again. Funnily enough making mods feels better than the game, curious why that happens.

I must confess I quit playing DSP and Satisfactory a few weeks ago (after a combined hour count of over 6000 over a period of 4 years). It was sucking me dry, and it happened to me a second time over a period of just over a year... That's not a nice trend. It's just too good ..

Perhaps you should try Minecraft. You can automate gathering of 90% of the things in it. Or modded Minecraft, with the Create mod for a more mechanical approach.

@@TotalXclipse Firstly, install Fabric to use Fabric Mods. Then here's my most essential mod list for vanilla Minecraft. Fabric-Api(required for other mod), Itemscroller, Litematica, malilib (required for other mods), minihud, sodium, modmenu, tweakaroo. Then whatever quality of life mods you feel like you need afterwards. Maybe Nvidium and Bobby to increase render/view distance. If you're a fan of building, maybe WorldEdit or Axiom. There's youtube videos on how to install mods, just make sure they match the version of Minecraft you're running otherwise it wont launch.

Stuff that i built. tho shapez and minedustry are good for me maybe i should try 1st person ones It just doesn't make sense to not have an objective or a loose condition that drives me to make better stuff and learn the game's mechanics

The only Factory game for me is Satisfactory. It has several levels of game play that keep me from getting bored. Exploring, base/building building, factory management. If you get tired of one, take a break and go do one of the other for a little bit. Then come back and finish up a factory that you were working on. Something then clicks and you find a better way to do it or a new vision comes into your head and you tear is all down to start over. 🤣🤣🤣

Personaly I like both Satifactory and DSP for different reasons. Satisfactory for its 100% efficiency "math", it's immensly "satisfying" to build that product, and see it run at 100%. DSP i usually over feed. the end game of DSP is for me better, since the scaling is better, (mostly because of BP's. you need x amount of resources? go to a new planet and stamp a global BP, clean it up, stamp down 2000 smelters, and go back to the "harder" items. In Satisfactory, the end game is HOURS of laying tracks and floors and belt ect. (if you want it clean and not just dragging it accross the map), and the big item upscaling is just to slow. the new BP system is something but so limited to a small print. DSP also has an immensly good feeling looking up at the universe and see all that travel seeing it all filled with "life". And last, seeing that first Dyson sphere being build and floating around your sun? Satisfying.
@TotalXclipse6 ай бұрын
I really want to love DSP, for all the reasons you've mentioned, it's just something I struggle to stay engaged with after 10-20 hours in game.
@ProSpiney6 ай бұрын
@@TotalXclipse the best tip I can give is. Build massive BP's in planet sectors (@nilaus-tv is the main source of insperation for this. Once you have the logistics system it all ramps up. Those you can build to max conveyor cap. And you can make it al perfect in numbers, but indeed Satisfactory has that covert better. Satisfactory also has more focus on actual buildings esthetics. And some of you have an insane eye for detail. DSP and factorio are pure production. But for me DSP takes the cake when you zoom out and look at a perfectly lay-oyt world. Still i have been suckt in these games for hours, blink and 4h have gone by.
@NoradNoxtus4 ай бұрын
I would love Satisfactory if its fundamental design wasn't predicated on not being a logistical challenge. The game almost feels like it doesn't want to be an automation game and so fumbles at how it goes about handling higher complexity and managing the inevitable tedium and labour these games require.

If I had to choose only one game to play the rest of my life it would likely be Satisfactory, Transport Fever 2, or Oxygen Not Included. All three have an endless amount of gameplay. Every map is different from the last. Your brain is always being used.
@TotalXclipse6 ай бұрын
In terms of pure hours in game, it would have to be Satisfactory for me, but I also loved transport Fever 2. For some reason I've never got into ONI. When you say every map is different, would you like different maps as an option in Satisfactory?
@TheCorpsehatch6 ай бұрын
@@TotalXclipse For Satisfactory I meant you can build your factory differently each time you start a new save. Was easier to use "map" as a generic term when talking about all three games.

i undertand what you mean on this video, i really understand, i also like a lot satisfactory, but i can work my way on dyson too, the only problem at least o my case, maybe i can be hours and hours on the game playing solo, and doing factories more and more bigger, but the problem is i enjoy a lot more if i can do the same playing with friends on co-op style, and that is not posible on dyson, for the moment i will prefer satisfactory on that point, with this videos you make us come back to satisfactory and is not even ready 1.0, damn, XD

i actually didn't like satisfactory as much. the large buildings and such feels obstructive. I like being able to easily see over the factory and change anything on the fly instantly without having to navigate a city like buildings. by the way, if you're in the market for a new factory game, FOUNDRY is coming out soon on early access on steam. It's a slimmed down version of satisfactory that I found to be much more approachable.

I've actually got a video prepped for Foundry, but I'd argue it's more like a first person Factorio than Satisfactory. Regardless it's a good game, and I'll probably cover it quite a bit more prior to 1.0

Love Satisfactory great graphics lovely machines and the map is amazing Dislike Techtonica, too much like Factorio and returned it again, again with the stupid arms instead of belts going into machines Have played countless survival games and yes when the survival is done and trivial they don't leave much else to do...
