it would probably be inconveninent to aim real gun in shield hand, if attacker decided to fight anyway you could easily miss firing like that (plus you couldn't fire at all if you had to block sudden attack with shield arm). So its better to use real gun in its dedicated hand and, since it has to be holstered and hidden most of the time, you need some distraction to silently draw it when threatened
@BrekkaJones245 жыл бұрын
In reality all of that was a distraction from the sniper that I have aiming at the robber, who happens to weild a toy noise maker to distract my robber so I could pretend to be his friend and save him from the sniper to earn his trust. Here's the thing: Fight choreography in movies and such are _abstractions_ of actual combat. It's a stylized performance that is symbolical of the real thing without actually being that thing. A good comparison is the song numbers in musicals. They are obviously not realistic - actual people can not nor would not break into improvised yet somehow perfectly executed song and dance performances to express how they feel about something. But by doing so, characters in musicals do relate that feeling while also being entertaining. You may or may not _like_ musicals but it makes no sense to criticize it for being unrealistic, since that is missing the point. Fictional representations of a sword duel or martial arts fight, etc, tend to work the same way, except it's somewhat less obvious since most people don't know that much about the real fighting techniques. Thus, people who do have a degree of understanding of such techniques tend not to realize that what they're seeing isn't supposed to be realistic in the first place. It's less fighting and more a sort of dance that expresses the _idea_ of fighting in an artistic way.
@MrSignman655 жыл бұрын
A counter, however, is historical film-making. Many historical films, (Outlaw King etc.) have inaccurate fighting. In this instance, the goal *is* to portray proper sword-play, not just as an artistic choice. They fail at this goal, largely because of the idea that combat has to be entertaining (which is false in the context).
@RelativelyBest5 жыл бұрын
@@MrSignman65 Well, "historical" should perhaps not be taken too literally. You say the goal was to portray proper historical swordplay, but was that really the case? Like, was that a stated goal of the production? I'm not familiar with Outlaw King so if they did intend it to be 100% accurate down to even that level of detail, well, I guess you may have a point. However, Wikipedia calls it a "historical action drama" which to me implies the action was indeed supposed to be entertaining, and that the movie in general was first and foremost supposed to be dramatic. Being a storyteller myself, I'd assume the priority here was simply telling a good story, albeit one taken from history. (Kinda like how those movies that are "based on a true story" are usually _not_ true stories themselves because the creators will take liberties - sometimes rather extreme ones - for the sake of a stronger narrative.) Now don't get me wrong: Attention to historical detail is generally a good thing for that sort of production. I know it can be kinda annoying when they get things blatantly, willfully wrong. But if complete historical accuracy and educating the audience about history is your primary objective, then you are actually making a _documentary,_ not historical fiction.

@n.m.dimmick1944 жыл бұрын
The thing is that abstraction is taken to the point of bastardization, and it completely shatters immersion for anyone who knows anything about the subject. Historical martial arts do have some flashy moves, and it's not that hard to spice up and overexaggerate even some of the subtler movements. Even just having characters start from the correct guards or hold their shields properly helps with maintaining the illusion that this is an actual fight, even if the rest of it is overexaggerated for the sake of making it easier to follow. Indeed, there are pieces of choreography using historically accurate techniques that are still extremely entertaining to watch--and I find the fact that every motion looks logical and feasible actually makes it far more engaging, since it feels real and like there is real consequence. Adorea Oloumac's "Knight of Hope" is an excellent example, as is Akademia Szermierzy's series on the Fior di Battaglia (especially the first and last one) which consists entirely of movements from Fiore dei Liberi's historical fencing manual "Fior di Battaglia." Both show engaging combat based on historical reality that looks far more plausible and deadly than anything I've seen in Hollywood. When watching a Hollywood fight, even knowing it's meant to symbolize combat rather than actually be combat, all I can think of is that every single character is incompetent and would die faced with even an amateur swordsman who knows what they're doing. It's so divorced from reality that it not longer serves as a convincing enough abstraction. Do movies and games have priorities other than pure accuracy? Yes. Visual clarity and style are important, as was touched on in this video, but they can still very much benefit from abstracting from a base of real world knowledge. Using reality as your base only makes your fiction better. Something being fantasy or an abstraction doesn't excuse something being laughably wrong, and the things that do deviate from reality need a reason for doing so or otherwise they're just plain wrong with no redeeming factors. Furthermore, comparing musical numbers and choreographed fights is comparing apples with oranges. The concession to the unrealistic element of people bursting into song is an inherent part of the musical genre. It's what makes musicals musicals. No one goes into a musical looking for people to behave 100% accurately to how normal people would. That they burst into song is something everyone acknowledges as something that just happens in the context of the medium, the same way cuts are something we acknowledge as part of the medium in movies (though there are a few very rare examples of films shot in one continuous take). Many movies featuring swordfights and medieval combat, however, are attempting to be or at least invoke the impression of accuracy, plausibility and realism, and nonsensical overblown combat completely shatters that illusion to anyone who knows the first thing about the topic. I don't have much problem with it in really high fantasy high magic settings, even though my personal tastes would prefer more realistic combat, it fits with the lack of groundedness and mundane reality of the setting. But in something like Game of Thrones, which aside from a few prominent magical elements, is very gritty and grounded in real world concepts and the mundane, overblown swordfights and armor that doesn't function as armor shatters the grounded vibe the show had to begin with--and Game of Thrones is FAR from the most egregious example of bad Hollywood swordfighting. Basically, while some concessions are a natural expectation of the purpose and medium, it can still be greatly aided by a basis in real world martial arts, and in many cases the complete lack of that base actually undermines the end product.

3:56 Former martial artist in Kenpo Karate here. I'm going to be frank: people who say that don't know what they're talking about. While spinning hits allow for more power, they are also very, very risky to attempt, as they give the opponent plenty of time to react. In an MMA fight they are used for two reasons: because it looks cool and because it is easy for the judges to see. There are much better ways to knock someone out than using a spinning kick or hook. You _never_ want to wind up your attacks in an actual fight, as it telegraphs your moves and wastes precious time. Martial arts schools sometimes spend years knocking that habit out of people.

@@deni6943 As I said, "While spinning hits allow for more power, they are also very, very risky to attempt." You can knock someone clean off their feet with a hit, but unless you know just when to execute one it will not end well for you. This is why it is discouraged in a legitimate life-or-death situation. MMA fighters are professionals that often have decades of experience, meaning they know when the best time to throw a spinning attack is. However, most people do not have that luxury when suddenly thrown into a fight. And, it is always a risk, since in MMA fighting you do not expect to die if you mess up. You might get tossed around a bit and give the opponent a free hit, but not death. However, in a street fight death is a very real possibility, so it is not worth it to attempt a spinning hit.

Another thing about spinning attacks: they usually have to be set up with non-spinning attacks. I really think that it is very possible to make subtle movements more engaging for the average movie/animation viewer. It just takes a completely different approach to filming. For the movies and cartoons, you pretty much always have to exaggerate things. And the way you can get away with subtle moves is to exaggerate not the movementz themselves, but the way they are filmed. The best way that gets to my mind is dollar trilogy - while whole gunfights are, like, seconds from start to finish, and there is probably nothing fancy in gunfighters moves themselves, they always have that insane build up before them. The other way to do it - to use exaggerated camera angles and close shots to characters to dramatize the scene. There are plenty of other ways of doing it, but those are just examples.

Back fists and other spinning attacks work in mma because we set them up. Fake a right hand for example, step true and land a left spinning back fist. With a sword, because it is a big object, this is a lot harder. It is the same with kicks in unarmed fighting. You need to set kicks up with punches in most cases because otherwise a skilled opponent will just see them coming, because it is a big limb, and block your kicks. Great video as always Skal👍🏼👍🏼

I agree I disagree. When you make a big movement towards someone, one they weren't looking out for they can react really awkwardly. An opponent might be taking or checking most low kicks or kicks to the body with their knees or by ducking down but when you leap at them for a superman punch they might throw their hands down, freeze up and pull their head up out of the way. Same thing if randomly you fly in with wild swings randomly. Lots of untrained people will react like this to most big looking attacks. I agree you set up these bigger, slower or more awkward attacks but I also think it can be inherently awkward having one thrown at you unless you already had that attack in mind just like someone randomly aiming for your nuts.
@7dayspking5 жыл бұрын
@@buttan3399 I don't necessarily agree that it's less dangerous. Throwing a vanilla right hand at someone can be pretty dangerous if they were expecting and preparing for you to throw it right then or even if they just incidentally commit with something that'll hit you while you're preparing or throwing that right, same is true for a sword. If you're unskilled everything you do is potentially dangerous and you've got no real way of telling if or when or discerning when or if you should do what. You can have the most beautiful 'efficient' cutting technique and still find it impossible to consistently hit your target or find that you're always getting hit first by your opponent's wide flailing strikes. Attacking at all, being anywhere near a step within your opponent's reach can be equally deadly or dangerous as flying at them with a spinning attack if in the next moment they hit you.
@7dayspking5 жыл бұрын
@@buttan3399 kinda yes, kinda no. If you're knocked out by that punch there's already a chance you're dead and your defenceless. If the 'sword poke' doesn't hit you in the head you'll almost certainly remain conscious no matter how fatal it is at least for a while, a lot of 'sword pokes' even right through while extremely harmful aren't fatal especially with modern medical facilities. So while the potential of a sword hitting you is more dangerous than an average thrown punch, a landed punch can be as dangerous to your health. That isn't what I meant though, I was talking about how dangerous it is to spin in sword combat vs attacking normally and comparing that to the same scenario in unarmed fighting.

Another point on unarmed spinning techniques is that they can be thrown with different limbs, from different angles, so it's easy to trick an opponent into blocking the wrong way, you can also do straight line attacks like the back kick to counter moving in. With a sword you know exactly where the attack is coming from the moment they spin, in addition, the person spinning with the sword doesn't have any way of presenting a danger while their back is turned the way an unarmed martial artist does with something like a back kick. So when fighting unarmed, the opponent is often forced to back off and play the guessing game of where your attack is coming from, or rely on pure reaction time.

In assassins creed origins and odessey when you do a heavy attack you spin around and when you do this the enemy takes the oppertunity to strike you.
