Everyone knows about how fast they can strike, but would be shocked by how fast they can move along the ground as well. I have to deal with them on my property every year. Oh, and they don’t always rattle/warn you before striking..

@nadagainagain4987

Generally about 2/3 of their body length. Never try to touch one that's already coiled. You can however gently scoop it up with a shovel. They usually wont flee once in strike position. If they are relaxed and not in strike position you can usually crocodile hunter them by the tail. Most pit vipers cant get a good strike without coiling up. Rattlesnakes are dangerous but highly predictable. You can often just toss a box or something in front of it with the opening facing the snake and itll put itself in the box.

I turned around and sure enough, it was off to my left but about 10 yards back was a huge fat one coiled up and ready to strike. About as fat as my wrist idk how long but it was ready. Idk I have a lot of stories I grew up here in southeast new Mexico. Another time I was up on a small dirt hill in my backyard with brush and overgrowth something told me to look down and about a coke can distance from my foot was another fat healthy rattler. No rattling at all though. Was about 85 degrees in early October

That's a baby for a Western Diamondback. I've been closer than that to a full-grown timber rattler, which is about that length. More accurately, my camera was closer. One day, decades ago, I was jogging on a trail and I saw a few small snakes ahead of me on the path and leaped over them. I turned around to see that they didn't scurry away like usual, so I went back to investigate. By the time I got back to them they moved off to the side of the path. I crouched down low so I could look at them and they were all looking at me, moving around but keeping their fierce looking eyes on me. Then I heard a rattler start up. Then I was like, "OK. Thank you for reminding me as we gardeners and hikers are out and about, at this time of year... you can be walking along, and nearly step on them bc you might not see them in time to get away from them - they can be that camouflaged!!! I live in New England, and, fortunately, we do not have many poisonous snakes as far as quantity is concerned, but they still exist. (Years ago, the populations of timber rattlers "got hit" with a deadly, to them, bacteria, and wiped a large portion of rattlers out.) There are certain areas, esp. north and west of Massachusetts where rattlers exist, and people have been bitten - even near Chicopee, MA.. And, in the past - several years ago - the only hospital which stocked the anti venom was at UMASS, in Worcester/ Shrewsbury. I do not know if that's still the case now. Let's not forget the other poisonous snakes! I don't know how they do so - perhaps the ingenuous use of their scales - but, don't forget - they can climb - even up trees (and,certainly, I've seen garden snakes in bushes, ~ 3 feet off the ground)!!! (ugh....) Years ago, in the early fall, I was on the edge of my garden area, and just so happened to look up to a tree which was just beyond that garden edge. I saw a "ball" of snakes in that tree, which was ~ 10 feet from the ground!!! When they saw I noticed them, the began to dissipate, dropping to the ground, and others slithering down the tree!!! Right out of a horror film!! Yup - ~ 10 or 12 feet off the ground, a ball of snakes on a thick tree branch!!! So, there are various scenarios with which we have to deal with them!!!

I had a rattler hit my van tire from about 10ft away. This snake went from the white line on the side of the road, past the yellow center line. All of 12ft. I thought he was going to pop the tire. An amazing animal.

I live in Kern County and I've run into rattlers quite a few times. The scary part is they're so well camouflaged that when they start rattling, you're usually right on top of them. It's a lot louder than it seems in KZbin too. It sounds like an adult grabbed a wooden rattle and shook it as fast as they can. The first one I ran into I never even saw, I could only hear it. I was in a Canyon on my motorcycle and walked into some tall dead grass, several feet tall, to pee. It started rattling somewhere within a few feet of me. Scared the life out of me

I've caught more than 250 and it's body length is easily reachable so 1 and a half to twice its body length is a safer bet far as how far it can strike should it be able to jump any as it strikes.

Okay I'm just looking through and I have an interest in real snakes. And it only took one bite for me to become interested in rattlesnakes. Then as I was saying now the best snake is the dead snake I never saw. But when they come into my yard a neighborhood that is outside of a sizable metropolitan area. And it was fairly cold and they were really thick rattlesnakes. I got one and I guess a few weeks later the other one got me sitting on my park bench in our backyard. It was not there. It came to me! Now you fellows that love snakes or say respect snakes or whatever reason is you want to throw stuff my way that's fine. Because I've got guys at through similar things my way because I won't kill this cougar that we have running around the property. A different location. I also know that there's copperheads around the property. But if I see with a copperhead I have no trouble defending myself. But that cat I'll just look at it an all-knowing that if it wanted to he could win the battle. So we all draw the line someplace. I find it interesting that in the Midwest that pygmy rattlesnakes are quite prevalent in certain cities throughout the Midwest.

I reached toward one with my 22 riffle to shoot it. I pulled trigger the same time he stuck. The bullet went through his body and blew off his rattles. It was a long-riffle load so very little effect of its body guiding the bullet at that speed. This means it was fully extended in a straight line as he tried to strike the muzzle. That told me that they strike their entire body length. Another story. My Dad and I were deer hunting, and I took right and my Dad left around a large bush. I heard the familiar buzz. My Dad froze and told me to back up and shoot the snake with my 30-06. I did and the snake was sunning on a flat rock that was tilted slightly toward me. My gun was sighted for 100 yards, so I aimed low being only 40 feet. Took his head right off about an inch from the head and sent it 30 feet away.

Lucky for Pop, and me for that matter, there was a doctor who lived nearby who saved Dad's life 🙏 It turned out to be a bad day for the snake tho, as the neighbor killed it, damn thing was 7ft long! 😨👉🐍

Male diamond back. Looks about 3’ almost. Relatively young guy too going off his rattle. Definitely more curious than defensive there, he was relatively docile. You must have been around him longer than the video shows if he’s that docile around you.

As a forester I was in woods everyday in Georgia. One day I was walking and felt something move under my right foot and looked down to find me standing on a 5 ft Eastern diamond back. I jumped (seemed like) 10 ft straight up. He never struck at me or rattled! I was lucky that day. I was walked up on many in my 30 yrs in the woods. One time I had one strike at me with half a rabbit sticking out his mouth! One time I was about to walk under eye level limb when I realized the limb didn't look just right and when I stopped I realized it was a rattlesnake stretched out on limb!! True stories and I have many more.

How about actually giving us a measurement in numbers ?! Just showing us a half-second moving-wobbly view of “.. this far away” with a distance-distorting lens is not going to educate us much - I guess I can now go look up how long 2/3 of a rattlesnake length is, and hope that the one I might encounter isn’t any older and longer… whatever that length may be…

I almost stepped on an Eastern Diamondback Rattler in Alabama last week. Wish it gave more of a warning. I almost stepped on it before it rattled its tail. It struck at my son and barely missed. He has scrape marks but no punctures. God protected us that day. We was 2 miles from the trailhead. We waited about 30 minutes for it to crawl off the trail.

I once had my face with in 12 inches of a cotton mouth coiled and ready to strike he was around 3ft fatboy, I also once stepped on a rattlesnake, fortunately he was a pygmy and couldn’t penetrate my shoe. Had another one strike my hand unbeknownst to me at the time, fortunately I was wearing leather gloves and didn’t immediately see him. I freaked some one out by picking up a Coral snake to relocate him one time. I miss seeing the almost translucent green snakes haven’t seen one in probably 30 years used to see them frequently
