HOW Far SHOULD You HIT your Golf Irons? and do you hit your Irons the right distance? The old classic 160 yards with a 7 iron, but things have changed over the years. Loft is the biggest factor in the difference also Club Face technology has created more springy faces and thus more distance.
Exactly how fast do you need to swing the club to hit 150 yards and also what is the functional affect of ball flight using strong lofted Game Improvement irons over more traditional lofts. Also added into the mix is a Hybrid Iron from Eleven.......

utterly bewildered 1) how logical and practical this is towards "playing the game" yet despite the YT universe's plethora of everything golf related, this video is on its own? And it is a gem among the stones. How is this not commonplace advice? Great synopsis! 2) how your following is anything below "at least" 200k is beyond understanding for me because I see the others and you stand above in transparency and excellent analysis for any layperson to easily understand and appreciate. Much appreciated. Playing golf = put ego aside ... or suffer accordingly lol.

Jay, great video as always! Your previous video reviewing the Eleven Hybrids speaks for itself. More and more golfers should, and will, start playing hybrids further down in their bag. I just received my Eleven 7 iron and I am completely shocked (as you were in your first review vid) of how easy they are to hit, how forgiving they are, the ease of height and decent angle that is easily achieved. Absolutely right for Slow Swingers, Medium to Slow swings are fine with more cranked lofted irons. Really the whole iron market needs to think that the loft choice is bound by your club head speed and therefore sensible distance gaps between irons rather than how far someone can hit a 7 iron 👍

@albonthegoat
@albonthegoat Жыл бұрын
One thing to keep in mind when it comes to rollout distance is ballflight. My iron set are the Wilson d9, so the loft is 27 degrees, but they're weighted for high flight so if I hit a green with a 7 iron, the ball usually sinks into the green quite a bit on the first bounce effectively killing the rollout like the sim showed. I try to go for the most bottom weighted clubs to replicate that feel through the bag.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
It's true that with club head designs whet CG is heavily weighted or located very low in the head that flight would be higher and what you see is true. Many different head designs that all types of golfers use, the video is a more umbrella capture of commonality 👍🏻 Thanks for the comment and for watching 👍🏻

Great video, although how far a golfer hits a 7i really depends on how well they compress the ball and how high the initial launch is. Of course in winter even with a 27 degree 7i run out is not currently a problem - I think my golf club is issuing members with a snorkel and flippers!

@AskGolfNut

@derekwhyle1884 mainly Derek this is more so an optimal understanding of what golfers would need to attain to get there, if you then add in the own golfers inefficiencies like swing and strike related issues then the speed also increases. Temperature and ball is another factor especial the temperature of the ball, but primary factors are speed and swing 👍🏻👍🏻

This is my current struggle. Currently use M4s(first year back golfing in 20 years). My last set of clubs were from about 1993. I beleive they were bladed, the 5 iron was a butter knife. That 1993 7 iron was 150yds on the money every time. These new clubs, yardage gapping is horrible. The bad shots feel good. And i think the offset is making my shots land left green instead of center.
@AskGolfNut

It's true that with loft changes over the years there is a great disparity nowadays of distance gaps between irons, really iron marketing should change to reflect the requirements of the golfer for sensible gapping rather than which company can make the longest iron award. Fantastic video Jay.No surprises in there but great clarity. My 921 forged irons up to 7 (sometimes 6 but my strike is less consistent) stop on a dime, much faster than e.g. a friends stealth irons. My “problem” is at the long end of the bag on Par 5’s. My G425sft 3W is set at 17.5 deg and I get 180-190 Total yds from early 80’s mph (not sure of carry but high ball flight, limited roll. I’d love a bit more distance (200 yds). A similar test on speed/loft to achieve say 180 yd carry distance would be really handy! This was one of your best! Tx
@danielcohen3159
@danielcohen3159 Жыл бұрын
This is a great video, Jay. I haven't seen anyone else do this kind of test and it's very relevant to a lot of average golfers. One thing I did want to point out was that when you were hitting the 27º club you were taking a lot of loft off it - basically hitting kind of a wind-cheater punch shot, And I think you had to do this for the test because you were taking so much speed off and swinging (for you) so slowly. I agree completely with the premise: that more loft equals more control. But a slower-swinging player who is coming, say, 5º over the top, with the face open and delivering close to the static loft of the club - hitting what we'll kindly call a fade - is going to get more height and more spin and a good descent angle. Of course that delivery is not maximizing efficiency by any means, but if it's the same delivery every time and they know where the ball is going, strong lofted irons will work for them. And of course that's why we get fitted.
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
Absolutely right, and also the golfer that swings across with the face open would also produce more of a glancing blow so the efficiency would be measurably reduced thus needing even more club head speed to reach the 150y number. This is much more a picture of with all the ducks in a line, how little speed is needed, couple the everyday golfers own inefficiencies and the head speed number would have to increase 👍🏻

As always another great video, for me this is a part 1 of 2. The natural follow up is at what speed/loft do you move to a hybrid. I'm getting older but have decent(ish) 7 iron speed at 83 mph. Bought a set of zx5's, in large part due to your review and review/compare videos, (thank you) after going for fittings (Srixon, Mizuno, Taylormade). My 7 iron distance is approx162-165, but for me that's actually irrelevant. It's 165 with a great decent angle (47-49) the ball stops. The 27 degree club in my set is a 6 iron, goes further, the decent angle is lower (45ish) and the fitter actually said with your speed I'd have hybrids above that. Because you've taught us well when i went for the fitting i was conscious of the dispersion and the decent angle in particular and got the clubs i needed to get me to the numbers i wanted. There have been 5, 7 and 9 woods for years. As a kid i remember playing with a guy who had these (i think they were ping) but 45 years later i would hazard a guess that predominantly we are still hitting probably longer irons than most of us should. Now my irons are sorted i'm looking into hybrid purchases (my wife loves me), i'm starting with a Mizuno 4 and maybe progressing upwards. Cheers as always.

There is a place for all lofts to be used but it must be marketed differently. It should be centred around golfers with differing speeds needing differing lofts to facilitate sensible distance gapping and then transitioning into say hybrid or fairway wood heads when required, rather than the distance wars which they all are seeming to wage on each other 🤷 it's not good for the golfer and invites poorly conceived ideas and fitting methods 👍🏻

Suffering from extreme tightness in my rear shoulder has me considering the benefits of swinging below my normal 92 mph and constantly missing left. this video provides insight, otherwise as of yet, unpresented except for righty Matt on TXG which was rubbish viewing. You make a case for going to the opposite ends of the spectrum of control vs. launch. My game improvers might not be the place to be going forward. My experiment will take me to a set of japanese market only callaway epic max fast irons with nippon 950 gh shafts. Unfortunately the loft on the 7 iron is 27 degrees at 37.5 inches, so effectively a five iron playing a half inch short, low offset hollow head. My 84 mph swing will still produce about a 175 carry so hoping the softer shaft will add spin and slice shape to my normal deaf angry hook. Great vid, deserves many millions of views. Keep up the excellent production Jay. Might I suggest a video comparing Stealth vs Stealth 2 STD drivers as many of us dabble in the cost saving offerings, second hand and dont think that head to head has been done.

@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
Top Tracer has been proven to be iffy at best and Range balls commonly either from excessive use and don't fly very well or by nature may be restricted flight, that results in not ideal data collection. The big take away from this video should be that under the best possible circumstances with the most efficient swing that 150 yards is attained, add in average golfers own unique inefficiencies due to swing dynamics and strike, then the speeds actually need to be much higher 👍🏻

Because you didn't hit it solid.. my 7 iron 162yd. If you have time go to simulator driving range, check your smash factor, 7 iron should be between 1.38 - 1.45 (smash factor). If you hit below that, which means you didnt hit it solid enough. Swing speed automaticly goes up when you hitting it solid
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
Hi Philip, thanks for the comment. Smash factor of 1.4 plus on a 31 degree head is achievable with a radar system with a certain amount of deloft. If measured on a camera based launch monitor 1.4 plus on a 31 head isn't achievable unless it's very delofted. Just one thing though the last bit about the swing speed going up when struck well. The ball speed will go up with a middle strike but the swing speed itself is dictated to by the golfers swing and release pattern, ball contact is just a consequence of the swing and doesn't impact on how fast you swing the head 👍🏻👍🏻 registered head speed may change depending on the strike location through head rotation 👍🏻

thats a problem with how manufacturers of game improvement clubs are trending towards where lofts are getting stronger and stronger each year and cg is going lower and lower in the club head to add back spin. they are doing this so that you can get closer distances to profesionals with the same Number iron. the problem with this is that it is a tricky balance you need a trustworthy fitter to make sure you still get all the other numbers correct (landing angle and spin). that particular 7iron is actually producing a 170yd total which is similar to a 170yd carry and 2yd roll for a tour pro, so the final distance is similar but it actually lands and spins like a 4 iron. to me that doesn't seem like a good fit at all since it's actually really hard to play fun golf with 20yd roll on a short iron as not every green will allow for that. if you are in this predicament and already bought the clubs, my advice would be to play a spinnier ball which is the lowest cost change and doesnt require any swing change. but seeing how that 7iron performed i really just felt it was a poor fit for 75 club head speed and that swing. LPGA average 7iron is 74 club head speed and 104 ball, very similar to what you produced here, but landed 47 degrees with 6700 spin.

Indoors with indoor mats they cover a multitude of strike sins, most of them slightly heavy strikes. Take this out onto the course, will see a quite large dispersion front to back differential. I notice you are only taking a half swing with your left arm just at or very slightly above horizontal on the backswing. I wonder if a shorter swing might also be a good idea for those of us who are in that slower swinging crowd. Of course a longer, fuller backswing normally will produce more clubhead speed and greater distance, but for those with less athletic coordination and skill it also brings into play less consistency and control and more off-center strikes.

People that need greater gapping in the irons should simply play hybrids or more woods.

I try to find as much of that as I can through shaft, then turn to high launching heads to squeez out any extra height I can. Depending on speed and strike constancy it can be anything from cleveland launcher xl halos to high lofted blades. The players distance category is doing really well for height these days too, I'm loving the zx5, 790, and t200 this season for damn near anyone once we get the right shaft in their hands.

Wonderful guidance. Nobody else does this, and I’m a golf geek who subscribed to at least 36 golf video producers. I am currently helping a son and a colleague look for irons. My takeaway from this is avoid any set that has a 7 iron loft stronger than 30.5, and by all means look at a 31 degree hybrid instead of a 7 iron, and similar hybrids to replace the 6 iron and possibly the 5 iron. Question: when you get to the 5 iron and 4 iron, would you suggest possibly going to a 24 degree 9 wood and 21 degree 7 wood? Or would you recommend staying with hybrids/utility clubs up to where a 5 wood comes in?
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
Great question and depending on club head speed and launch potential, I will look at the descent angles passed the 7 hybrid iron to then see when the transition should be. I would happily allow the golfer to play 9 woods etc as this in itself is a cheat code fro functional flight as loft reduces. There really isn't enough information out there and I unfortunately don't have the reach yet as some of the bigger channels, but I've always tried to show that golfers need to come away from lovely shiny hard to hit long irons to move into hybrids and Fairway woods where appropriate 👍🏻👍🏻

I've become a confirmed missionary advocate for things like my Callaway Epic Max 7W with HZRDUS Smoke iM10 60 R flex shaft and Paradym 9W with Aldila Ascent Blue 50 R flex shaft, often let others at my driving range try them because you usually can't find anything except 3W and 5W in the demo rack. Today at the range I made two converts. One a big tall older gentleman with really old clubs, all metal heads with rails, no carbon. He was talking to a younger middle aged man there with his wife and two young boys, mentioned he had a heart attack some years ago. The younger man mentioned he began playing golf at age 7 but was not playing so much now. He had old clubs, Ping i3 irons released in 2000. Think they had belonged to his father. The regular shafts were perfect for the older gentleman and he immediately got good high trajectories and better distance than with anything in his bag. He'll be looking. The younger man had a fast swing so had to throttle back a bit, but he hit both miles high and long. Said he still loves his long irons, doesn't like utility clubs, but had to admit he hit those two woods more easily, higher, straighter and better than his long irons. Keep telling people if players like Dustin Johnson have both a 7W and 9W in the bag, so should we amateurs and the old knock that they were only for senior geezers and little old ladies with A and L shafts has been blown away.@AskGolfNut

My stock 7 iron carry distance is 190-192 and my Cobra King CB 7 iron is traditionally lofted at 34 degrees, your video is very interesting and it shows that distance control is really important for all golfers including much slower swingers and that they should play with irons with which they can get sufficient launch and spin to stop their approach shots on the green.

The idea of golf isn’t to mess around with your swing to make your 7 iron go a particular distance. You should swing your clubs at whatever speed is most comfortable and natural to you, and take notice how far the ball typically carries. Then you can really know which club to choose for a given shot.

Many sources say you get 2.3 yards more distance with each extra 1 mph of clubhead speed. So if you got 145 yards with 76.3 mph for the 34 degree blade, then a 74 mph swing would produce just over 5 yards less carry or 140 yards. I can get that but only with my best shot and near perfect strike location. So you are proving that if I, like many long-time golfers, want to have a reliable 150 yard approach or short part 3 shot that stops, we need to either find a 7 iron with a 30.5 degree loft and lots of weight distribution and fast face technology to get the ball launching high, or pick up a 30 or 31 degree hybrid like you have here. It may sound funny to stronger players, but this 150 yard shot is so critical because if you play tees where you will have several approach shots of 140-160 on par 4s and can consistently land on the green with a chance to one putt and an almost sure 2 putt instead of a miss, a pitch, and two puts, you will knock a good 5 or more strokes off your score and feel a lot better about life.

Jay…I’ve broken down Tman LPGA and PGA Avg Tour distances yards per mph and yards per ball speed. Generally avg 7is are nominally 1.9 to 2.0 yards per mph. I use 2.0 because it’s an easy # to do the math in your head. Think this is a simple way to quickly access shaft fit for 7is.

The lpga and pga are very much optimal numbers, with extremely good strike consistency and very good face to path relationships.... Commonly the everyday golfer doesn't get close to this level of face control let alone strike control so I would use it as a holy grail number, the actual number for everyday golfers would be much lower 👍🏻👍🏻

You've also triggered a completely reverse thought. What is the minimum swing speed to use a particular loft with stop? Most people thing of an 8 or possibly 7 as the lowest scoring club. But what speed/distance should you give up on control of stop? People look at Blades as "too hard to hit" but perhaps the other end is equally import - eg "you hit your 7i HL 125, don't expect stop".

@@AskGolfNut I was thinking about what people should expect on landing, vs control. The faster you hit clubs & the higher, generally the more spin you get too. So eg an 923 HL 8i is going to come down differently to a 923 tour. There's a swing speed that will generate enough launch to create stop on the green. For some people, they might never reach it, but for most, scoring clubs have more control on landing, but what's too much? Hence swing speed vs club. For each club I'd expect you to be able to find a speed where stop is within the gapping (& green size). And that will come with a particular distance. It's the reverse consideration to "you need more help to get the ball in the air" from eg a 6i I'm also thinking about selection data. I have a green at my home course that is 140-160 range. A false front means you need to carry that. My perfect 7i is 150, but therefore I take a 6i, and generally play a cut for a soft landing - I need stop in 10 yards or I am through. But am I looking at it wrong? Is there a better choice that will hit the range but will not run through. It's about informing club selection, and where I should jump model/type.

Only issue here is your hitting punch shots at the lower speeds 71.6 mph and a launch of 14.2 and delofted your club to 18.6 ( with the 27 degree head )so its not the way most players at that speed would deliver the club head at all and when you went to the 31 degree ( 4 degrees weaker) your Dynamic loft went to 26.6 ( 8 degrees weaker ) I am guessing it has to due with that you are a higher speed player so it is harder to mimic it, I think it would be neat to have someone who swings at these speeds naturally hit the shots, good vids thou !!
@AskGolfNut
@AskGolfNut Жыл бұрын
Very much so, it's more difficult than people think to be able to reduce speed and keep all swing dynamics and strike exactly the same.... I guess this is why no one does forgiveness testing like I do on all my reviews coupled with it also done at different swing speeds for golfers at differing ability levels to relate to... This really should be taken as a measure of what is possible given the best possible circumstances so in really life if a different golfer used the 27 degree and delivered much much more loft then it would go higher but with their reduced swing speed and reduced efficiency from the increased loft, the carry distances would also reduce 👍🏻 Where the 27 degree 7 iron heads really work well is when you have golfers in the high 70s to very low 80s to give them the correct distance and distance gaps between irons. I would really like to see manufacturers change their marketing to show that the main reason for producing irons with different lofts is for golfers that swing at different speeds and therefore ensuring the classic 10-12 yards gaps between clubs. Somehow that's not as sexy marketing as selling a 7 iron that hits the ball light years in distance 😊
