To me it’s like traditional racing, slower cars just make for more competitive and intense racing. The highest levels of Motorsport are always done in the fastest cars but if you watch an mx5 cup or btcc race it’s more action than you get in a full year of formula 1. I feel the same about drifting, as someone who was at the original fd irwindale I still think that was the prime era of the sport. So many of the cars were so unique for those early years too

Ever since I was a kid I found these drift missiles from formula drift a little off putting. If you go back to initial D, or watch old videos of the drift king at ebisu then you see that there's quite a bit of elegance to their drift as they shift the weight of the car and slide, applying power as they leave the corner. These cars always feel like they're doing a powerslide. More akin to gymkhana, more Ken block's style.

I would still try to get into FD with a Twingo… The RR layout makes for a great drift car with as little modification as installing an off-Switch plus software to the Traction Control system. But I would be curious as to how much more it would take to make it into the series.
@myrmeko
@myrmeko 3 ай бұрын
Good luck with that engine... It really likes to break. They made the stupid mistake to replace the good ol' reliable with some modern Renault shit. It's neither the good engines Twingo or Smart ForTwo/ForFour had so far. (Current Twingo and Smarts are the same car.) If you can get some forged pistons and rods for another engine to fit in your Twingo, go for it. It would probably get up to, like 200HP, maybe. The biggest problem is the open deck block. You'd need to get a custom block guard made specificaly for your engine. Then it would most likely go to 300+ just fine. (Of course with ARP bolts everywhere.) Idk about the transmission, but it should take that little power, right?

It's not exactly about entry speed, everyone can drag race. More acceleration allows you to carry less speed through the corners if your trajectory is bad. Also gives you more angle at higher speeds. Cars in Russian Drift Series have 800-900hp on average (and most powerful is 1360hp on engine), and on some circuits initiations are 100mph+. Circuits are pretty technical, so almost any mistake is critical. My point is: yes, it's easier to drift high hp car, but it doesn't matter if configurations are designed to push pilots to their limits even with this much power. But of course it makes harder for new people to start participating competitively. The middle ground is to limit tire width, taking a bit away from eye candy.
