I started out riding MTB (came from MX) on the original 5010 (back when it was called a Solo). I progressed to a Pivot Mach 6 for riding park. While the bike was more stable and plush, I never really felt that the 5010 wasn't enough bike for me (outside of park riding). I'm now building a Tallboy 4 CC. Something I've noticed here on my local trails is a lot of people on really big enduro bikes claiming they don't ride short travel because they can "easily overwhelm" them. There's generally three categories for these people... 1) they're lying. 2) their suspension is not set up right. 3) (rarely the case) they're EWS level good. Short travel bikes are amazing, even more so nowadays with the geometry changes. They're fun, light and nimble. No sense in suffering more up the climb to carry that extra capability that you may never tap into. Great videos MTB yumyum. Keep up the great work!

I know that I'm a year late on this review. I actually bought the Gen 1 Switchblade based on the review you gave at the time. I still love the dang thing and I'll keep it for the next few. I love your review videos and consider you the best bike reviewer on KZbin. That being said I think the speed cutoff of 25-30mph could be pretty misleading. I looked up some of the Enduro World Series athletes KOM's just for fun, and most of those downhill segments never exceed 20mph with the average at maybe 17 mph. I follow you on Strava and you are really fast, but if you look at your past rides I don't think you will find many segments where you are going over 20 mph, especially on the jankier terrain that would require a bigger bike. I ride the janky Colorado Front Range trails and I would opt for the Switchblade all day long, every day for the comfort, safety, and confidence the bike gives on the rocky technical downhills. There are very few trails that allow you to hit 25 or 30 here, and those you could probably do on the Trail 429, but more safely on the Switchblade.

Yeah, that's a good point about really janky trails... most of the trail I ride (and what I see a lot of people riding) are not anywhere near as janky as many of the EWS events. This may warrant a follow up video on the topic... I may have gotten a little ahead of myself on speed alone... it will always be subject to "speed/terrain" so, the speed over a specific terrain.... that's for making the note!

Probably your best review to date. Very in depth and you covered just about any ? Someone might have. I would say the enduro build it probably best suited for the heavier rider that wants the 429. More bottom out resistance and stiffer fork for alittle chunder fun without xtra flex. Keep up the good reviews

I saw that silver Trail 429 at my LBS and man, it looks sooo nice. Btw, the shop also had the new Stumpjumper which I quickly rode around the lot, and..wow. Right away it felt super sprightly. Did not expect that, but their suspension redesign totally changed that bike. It actually reminded me of the liveliness of DW link. It'd be great if you can get your hands on one and give your impressions. Specialized is a brand I never liked, but that short parking lot ride really has me thinking. Definitely wanna get one out on the trail. Anyway, great comparison video, Jason.. thanks👍

Just my own two cents, I think rider weight can also play a big part in choosing the best bike. In my opinion 20mph weighing 140lb and 20mph weighing 220lbs can be two very different challenges for a suspension system. The heavier rider is going to be pushing the bike into the trail more and causing more frame and fork flex, they may need more travel and a burlier bike.

@@mtbyumyum I'm 230 lbs with all my gear on, I'm pretty strong, and have a Hightower LT CC and I rode it stock (other than changing to assegai/aggressor tires) for a year here in Phoenix, mainly on National and other chunky trails in the area. Then I swapped out the standard Fox 36 Fit 4 fork for a new Fox 38 with the Grip 2 damper, and a Fox DHX2 with a 600 lb spring, as well as bigger 200mm front rotor. The difference was huge. I went from feeling like I was overpowering the bike in the heavier chunkier sections where my weight was playing a factor, to a bike that gave me TONS more confidence in those same areas, I think mainly due to the Fox 38 up front. I rode Deer Valley bike park (and Park City trails) the first year bone stock, then the same deal a year later with these upgrades, and I'm so much happier with the bike and had so much more fun. I really want either a Trail 429 or a SB130 for a trail bike so I can do more of the longer blue trails around here, but even on those trails I feel like I'd be too much for the Trail 429. I wish I could just go grab a demo from the Pivot HQ about 15 minutes from my house but they don't have the regular trail version in my size.

I ride a 2020 Swichblade here in Georgia. My average MPH is typical 8 to 10 mph. But in the 20s a good bit and 30s . This bike does everything. Fast downhills jump lines and uphill climbing. Soooooooo buttery smooth! 🧈

So good!! You really nailed everything. I demoed the SB and had a great time on both the climbs and descents. Where it did not exceed my V3 Ripley was on rolling, twisty XC trails. It just could not charge up small rises and preserve momentum like my lighter Ripley could. The only “flaw” in your reviews is that you undercut my weight and height by 60# and 8,” so I am closer to your buddy Luke. If you could maybe put on 40# or so, that would help😂. By your speed description, the T429 is a better match for me, but I wonder about the enduro build to make the bike match my weight better. On my Ripley, I can feel underbiked on stuff you ride like Zen, Capt Ahab, or Hiline in Sedona. Those are not my typical trails, but I would be willing to haul an extra pound around in order to tackle the gnar with more confidence. Thanks for the great comparo!

I’ve been riding a 2016 Salsa Bucksaw (changed out wheelset to 27.5x2.8 for summer) for quite a while now in upper Midwest. Looking to upgrade to something with more travel. Rented a 2020 Switchblade in Oregon back in fall ‘21. Really liked it and was really leaning towards that until this new 429 came out. For most of my riding I know the 429 would be the best fit. However, I’m getting into more jumps and drop later where the Switchblade would be better… and this is where it snowballs… now I’m considering investing in two bikes a 429 and a Firebird to give a bit more confidence on trails with those features. Investment aside, maybe it’s better to just be comfortable on one bike knowing your limits better. JB comment below is good to keep in mind. Keep videos coming!

I had to check what 25 mph was in km/hr (Canadian here) and my reaction was “holy crap! Who rides that fast?” hahaha. I’m 5’5”130 lbs woman and I just bought a medium frame Switchblade. I love the technical ups and flowy downs and feel that I’m very capable on blues and most blacks. I had to fiddle with my rear suspension after the my first ride to get it just right as I felt like I was being bounced around too much…I feel like I’m getting there wrt dialing it in. I live in BC and our trails range from rocky, rooty, loose scree, loamy - I am super excited to ride my Switchblade on technical ups to see how it fares. I just wanted to say thank you for the review - I probably would have gone with the 429 based on the speed comment. I don’t (or ever want to) go 30 + mph on my bike on the trails! We were in St George UT, Moab and Sedona AZ before Covid and loved the trails on my RM Altitude - I can’t wait til we can travel again so I can ride these areas on my Switchblade. :)

The 429 is awesomeness for 140lb shredder. I'm 6'1" 210lbs went to the shop to rent a Ripmo but the only bike they had was the 429 and I think I broke it. 24mph into a g-out and it made a high pitch snap or crack sound. After that it was creaking pretty bad. So this isn't a choice for me I'd have to go with the Switchblade...

I agree that there is something to the weight thing. I especially notice it up front. I’m not as big as you (190ish) but I was never very confident on the last 34 I rode. Too noodly. Switched to a 36 and can’t go back. Granted the 34 may have improved since the last version I rode but I would opt for the 36 on anything I’d be trying to go even somewhat fast on in chunkier terrain, including on the 429.

Those friends of mine that are bigger but still want a short travel bike, I always tell them to go for the Fox 36... the extra stability and support is a game changer for sure... nothing worse than a noodly front end. Great comparison! The geo on these bikes are in the sweet spot for me. Some newer bikes go a little too far for me. Once you get used to getting your weigh over the front by getting your body almost parallel over the frame, the traction is phenomenal on these types of bikes.

Great way to describe the 429. Just demoed the 429 and the Ripley in Fruita Colorado. For ME the the 429 wins all day for how I like to ride. The Ripley is more twitchy and pucker feeling at higher speeds and when it gets a little techy I grabbed way more brake. I just let the 429 go and do its thing and it climbs awesome. But it is not perfect it is a little slack in the techy climbs but I found you just carry more speed. I wish the shop(Over the edge) had the Evil Following to demo to really see what bike wins for me. In the end like Jason said If you like to go fast and like 1-2 ft rocky knar and will get you to the top just fine the 429 wins. If you like flowy some tech and a really fast turning bike and yes it climbs as well then the Ripley is your bike. Both bikes will do anything you throw at a Trail bike it just depends how YOU like to YOUR bike......oh yea I'm 56 and has had way more bikes then Jason but he is catching up!

Good video... you compared speed on these... but i didn’t hear you compare comfort... for the ‘old guy’. I like a bit more travel as it makes the accidental hard hits more recoverable, less hard on my body ... so for the same reason the SB is good for high speed and “sending it”, its also good for the “accidental bad landing”... for me, even though I’m not a Mach Chicken guy that often, i think i’d sacrifice the endurance for a bit more travel on the oopsie-hits. :). Good video. I like the GoPro rear-view so we can see the bike/rider motion better... good addition from videos from couple years ago. Nicely done.

Really great video Jason. You explained perfectly the souls of the two bikes and their capabilities. Very clear, very accurate and very useful. Not to mention that, for me that I am from Italy, very easy to understand the language. Sometimes I see video asking myself if the driver is a rapper making a fast contest or a tester? I think the enduro model matters when you're over 200 lbs and want the beefier sanctions. I'm so torn between the 429, switchblade, SB130 and SB150. 429 is the bike for 90% of what I do but the 10% matters so much I'm even considering the SB150. What do you think about SLOW technical descents? I feel like technical climbs the 429 is a no brainer.

Hope you test the Enduro. My $0.02...... I like it because it is still a 120mm bike, and as such still more maneuverable, poppy, lighter than a 150mm bike. The Fox36 feels more solid compared to my previous 34-130mm and gives me confidence on steeper trails, and the extra 10mm of fork travel allows me to run it softer to better handle the high speed small bump chatter.

Always enjoy watching your honest reviews. That being said, I don't 100% agree with the idea that a riders speed should dictate one vs another. Example, In AZ we have the National Trail very well known trail not far from Pivot Cycles HQ. A riders speed on that trail up or down is quit slow BUT one likely would be better served to ride a Switchblade because of the chuck factor. There are many trails in Sedona AZ similar to the National Trail. You make many points about rider weight, style and everyday riding trails which alternatively should dictate the purchase. I personally would like to know the specific weight savings between these two or others you review. Just my 2 cents, keep up the good work. If you ever make it down to AZ would love to show you around our great trails.

@@GF-cb8rr I would find it hard to believe the new Trail 429 would be enough bike especially if your skilled enough going down the waterfall. I personally come off an Ibis Ripley with a 140mm front and went to a Yeti SB130 LR. My Yeti asks me to ride it hard and I love that. It's not as poppy but it's 100% safer when I bomb down waterfall going mock chicken haha.

I would love to get down there and ride.... The weight of the bikes is tough as you rarely see Switchblade owners running "trail" tires... think Schwalbe NN, Maxxis Rekon.... and that's a fair bit of weight there. I still think speed is the biggest single factor. I can ride slowly through even the chunkiest trails particularly given the geo of these new "short travel 29er superbikes"... think Spur, Ripley and T429 for the longest time, 120mm bikes still had 68 degree hta.... put some burly tires and a 66 degree hta on a 120mm bike and every trail becomes doable!

Sounds like an Ibis Ripmo v Ripley type of comparison. Both of these Pivots are great bikes that could be a single bike for someone, but each is really better suited for its own element.

I’ve been thinking about this over the past couple of weeks, and so I’m glad you posted on this Jason. My situation has been the following. I have a 2019 Epic EVO, and a 2020 Stumpjumper. Two very different bikes. On the same course, the Epic EVO has a 0.5mph advantage over the Stumpy for the first hour of riding. This is to be expected. However, after two hours, the difference in average speed is negligible (0mph). And by the third hour, the Stumpjumper has a slight lead over the Epic EVO (0.1mph). The only way I can explain that is as follows. I usually ride an hour a day, whether on the trail or on the trainer indoors. That hour of daily base allows me to get the most out of each bike. But once I fatigue after that first hour is over, the Stumpjumper compensates for a lot of errors I may be making that the Epic EVO does not afford. This means I can plow ahead with the Stumpy at higher speed, which I cannot do on the Epic EVO (too demanding on rider input). Does this make sense to anyone?

Interesting. I think I experience the opposite... I feel fresher on the lighter, faster rolling bike. With tires that have less rolling resistance, more efficient pedaling platform and overall lighter weight... all the pumping in and out of corners on the lighter faster bikes leaves me feeling less fatigue as time goes on. Of course, this is a function of your terrain.... on choppier rougher terrain, I can see the longer travel bike leaving you fresher on the descents. For most people, the majority of time is spend climbing and traversing, not descending!

@@mtbyumyum Thanks Jason. It could also be dialing the fit in a little better to improve the performance on the Epic EVO. I've owned that bike for about two years now, and I had been riding it with the stock 80mm stem it came with. I changed that out last weekend to a 60mm stem, so we'll see how that changes the long-distance comfort and the subsequent effects on speed. The Pivot demo fleet is making a stop in town next weekend, and I've got the Switchblade reserved. Stoked to try it out and see how it compares with everything else I've ridden!

Actually bought a 2013 Stumpjumper Elite 29er used that probably had less than 200 miles on it. I do a lot of roads and gravel to link my local trails, so the points you make about what you ride most was what swayed me to go with a shorter bike. The new bikes with long/med travel are so long, slack, ...and heavy, if you don't want to spend money for carbon. No, it doesn't have the modern geo, but my last rig was a 26" 150/160 Spec Enduro. I feel plenty stretched out on the 29er. It is more than capable for my trails and some local jump tracks, and it is 30 lbs with a frame pump, empty water bottle, and alloy Enduro pedals. Used can be another option, if you don't want to wait for the supply to meet the demand in the industry.

I've got a V2 Megatower and a new Orbea Wild, but kinda want to get a trail bike to add to the fleet, and I've had my eye on that Trail 429. I did it. I saw the bike in person, sat on it and now it’s mine. From my limited riding so far, it seems like an amazing bike, I got the Pro XT/XTR, with the DT Swiss wheel set. I think I may want the the Industry Nine enduro set with the hydra hubs, those are amazing and on this bike it would be appropriate. But.. I’m going to enjoy as is for awhile.

I feel like you should try a set of Roval Control SL wheels. I’ve been bashing them on my Stumpjumper and they are solid. The light wheels will make your all day rides that much better as you are taking about a full pound of rotational mass off the bike. Not even looking for a review, just thought you would appreciate that product for your personal use.

watched this couple months after it came out... and again tonight as I ponder ditching my Bronson for a Trail 429. My Occam had a Fox 34 and I put 140mm air spring in it. Bronson has a Fox 36. for my 220lbs, 6' height (all kitted out), the Fox 34 is just flexy enough I won't buy a bike with a fox 34.... if I hit a trail more than chundery or flowy, the Fox 34 just starts flexing and 'wandering' where the Fox 36 holds rigid and sure... I was looking at a Ripley, but don't want to spend the bones to swap the fork. Rode a Switchblade.. climbs WAY better than my Bronson.. doesn't descend as well, but close... but the Switchblade climbed SO much smoother... not much faster, but smoother, used less energy and I was getting over stuff the Bronson couldn't (I'm not strong enough)... so now I see why the Enduro is such a great offering.. and I'm super glad so many folks don't want it because today, in 2024, the 429 Enduro is seeing hUGE discounts. :). y'all go buy switchblades please.. until I get my Trail 429 enduro. :). great video as always... and I really see the differences of a 140lb rider vs a 220lb dude. :). awesome vids. always enjoy them.

I just came across your videos a few weeks ago as I was researching bikes. Great job! I just purchased a Switchblade from Salt Cycles and put it through the paces for the first time this weekend in St. George. I did the Jem trails, The Whole Guacamole, Wire Mesa and Bearclaw Poppy. I was very happy with the Switchblade. It climbs far better than I expected it to. I considered getting the Trail 429 as well. After watching your video and hearing your description of the two, now you have me second guessing my choice. I’m wondering if the Trail 429 would have been a better fit for my riding style.

I wouldn't get to panicked... in as much as the T429 is more playful and maneuverable at lower speeds, the Switchblade has incredible "trail manners" for a mid travel 29er. In the end, should you choose to go with a Trail 429, you'll likely fetch top dollar for your Switchblade and I'm sure Chris will take excellent care of you!! Thanks for the support... SB and Ripmo are similar until you get in a hairball situation... extreme tech, SB finds traction where the Ripmo might give up a little... that said, most people's legs will likely give up before either bike does! Ripmo is an excellent climbing bike for a mid/long'ish travel 29er

If it wasn't for supply chain issues I would have ended up with a different bike, but that being said, the Switchblade is a very good bike for its intended use. I just feel it needs to be pushed before it will reward you of fun. I ride a lot uphill and a lot of slow stuff, so my way of dealing with it is simply to run low tire pressures for the slow stuff so I won't be too beat up. I also have it in the high position which gives a lot less pedal strikes, as well as less hits towards the bottom bracket(I do run a bashguard) Personally I did not feel any real sacrifice for going down with the flip chip in high, so I would only have it in the low position if I mostly ran fast downhill stuff(which I hardly do at all). I use Conti Trailking for most rides, because I rarely need lots of traction, so I'd rather have less drag. I really like those tires because they feel perfect for 95% of what I ride, and for when I hit wet roots, moss and such I just take it easy because these tires will slip very easily on that stuff. Personally I would really like to test a Santa Cruz 5010 to get a feel for how big of a difference there is between such bikes, and see in what ways it would be better or worse for my actual use. Maybe also the Tallboy just to test some tire size differences. For me personally I feel it would work better if the Switchblade had a more leveled geometry, like a 150/150mm supension setup because I really feel it is complaining for the techy uphill stuff. You have to work harder than you should have to, and it really wears you down is my experience. I feel it is sad that so many bikes these days end up with a downward pointing geometry when most people ride and live in the real world where most of the rides are not going down or have huge drops and what not(I got 10km of gravelroad with 650m of elevation just to get to something being considered a trail)

I have wanted a Pivot since I demoed the 429 V2 back in 2019, but it did not work out for different reasons (price, had to replace my car, house expenses, etc). Now the time has come but I can only afford one bike and I've torn between the Trail 429 ans the Switchblade. I watched all your videos regarding these 2 bikes and noticed that you said that deciding between the two bikes is all about speed. But what if I'm 5'8" and 205 lbs? I weigh 50% more than you, so wouldn't the Switchblade suit me better with it's a burlier frame, longer travel, and Fox 36 upfront? For my weight it's should be more planted and confidence-inspiring than the trail 429, or am I missing something? Thanks! BTW, great reviews!!! keep on makind it! I'm a burly 5'9" 200lb. rider who had the previous Switchblade in AL and loved it except for climbing. Was going to get one in carbon to boost climbing capability but availability issues forced me to get a 130mmFR/RR Trail 29r (Jamis Portal- should review that by the way 4fun). That felt REALLY balanced climbing/descending speed&terrain ability wise but after I upgraded the fork travel to 150 it was even better (Fox Rhythm 34 FYI- did not feel noodly to me). The HT angle was too sharp for me so it's back to the Pivot decision. This is all Just for data points. My gut tells me that you should pick your bike based on terrain not speed. You can go mach chicken comfortably with no technicals AND I think you'd feel uncomfortable on bigger technicals with less travel despite going slower. Do you want to take the edge off climbing or descending??? 429 is for climbers, Switchblade for descenders. That's my 2cents.

The GRIP 2 fork vs the fit 4 seem to be quite different in feel and performance. The DPX2 vs the DPS also seems to be a good bit different. My impression is the DPX2 and GRIP2 are much more comfortable. Where am I wrong? Thanks for the video!

I just overhauled my Fox 34 performance and replaced my Grip1 damper with the Grip2. It's a very noticeable improvement in fork performance and a lot more knobs to fiddle with.

I just purchased a Trail 429 (size L) for the trails in the Phoenix area but I’m waiting on the Carbon wheels to be delivered before I take it home. I’m 6’0 tall and 210#. So, is it worthy of considering rider ability when choosing short or mid travel and not just speed? The consensus seems to be a longer travel bike will bail a lesser experienced rider out of trouble, particularly when it comes to stability and line choice. I have a Ripley and a Ripmo, and I always choose the Ripmo if the trail is sketchy (blue/black). I realize most people may not have the ability to own two bikes, but was just curious if ability should be factored in on bike choice?

Yeah, that might be a good point. I think it's true that a more experienced or technical rider would likely fair better on a shorter travel bike in terrain that is considered more difficult than the bike is suited for.... that said, if you're riding in terrain that you're familiar with, it's my opinion you match the bike to the speed and terrain for highest fun factor.... I get it, we explore and adventure to unknown trails and terrain, and any time you get "over your head" and in a for technical or difficult situation, more bike could be better on the day... but ideally, get the bike for the speed and terrain you ride most often... if you go to a bike part twice a year and every other ride is blue trails, rent a big bike for those rare occasions would be my advice. man... I'm searching for a light bike (XC-ish), but without that ultra low stack. 600mm for size L is insane for me. I have long legs, the seat post is always high up, and the bars are way down. The position is killing me: neck hurts and it just feels like a punishment. I don't feel I have control over the bike, because all my weight is on my hands and on the bars. I feel I have more control on trail bikes. But I don't need the 150mm travel, nor the added weight of the trial bikes. I just want an XC-ish bike, with 66HTA and 630-650mm stack for L. Just make longer headtubes, that's all. It's strange, I seem to be the only one complaining. I must be missing something. Ps: the ibis dv9 look pretty good on paper, but it's a hardtail.

I feel like the switch blade is a pretty reasonable bike for all but the most XC of trails. The switch blade is really a true do anything trail bike. 66 degree head angle is close to some XC bikes these days. (epic evo)

During the video, you mentioned that "lighter" riders may favor shorter travel bikes while "heavier" riders may favor longer travel. While that made sense initially, after further thought I was confused. Aren't shocks set based on the riders weight? If so, why would someone who weighs more require more travel? Bike with longer travel are typically build stiffer with more carbon layup. Particularly in the rear triangle. Also, the Fox 36 has more than just longer travel, the stanchions are thicker resulting in a stiffer more stable ride.

Open trails without ruts, roots and rocks to catch a pedal the SPUR may be better. Tighter chunky trails T429 is my guess. Also thinking the T429 is stiffer and stronger.

Yeah. For us lighter riders it can some times feel a bit harsh... I went with a smaller volume spacer and more air... in the end, it would just sometimes be a little on the harsh side through heavy sustained chatter... For a softer ride, consider the Ibis Ripmo as a very good climbing bike that will be slightly smoother on the chattery descent. Also, the Evil Offering is a lit of fun and good descending.... not nearly as good climbing as the Ripmo or Switchblade.

I’m considering a used Pivot 2020 AXS build. I’m 200lb, mainly blue trails rider and can manage high 25 mph plus downhill on these blue trails on a 100mm travel 2005 Ellsworth truth. My main and comfort bike is an 2006 Ellsworth Moment with 150mm fox coil front and back but I really want to go light, playful and nimble, 29 inch, and somewhere between the two bikes. I no longer care about sending it or finding drops or charging through rock gardens. Is a used 2020 Pivot 429 a good pick? Is there enough difference to go for a new 2021 429?

I bought a new Switchblade (before the 429 update) although by speed alone a 429 or Ripley would be favored by your advice. I don’t think you’re wrong it’s good to consider. But there are some other factors maybe. One a bigger bike will bail you out so if you’re not as skilled and don’t want to get injured that’s a factor. Also how many bikes do you have? It’s easier to own a 120 bike if you also have a bigger one. I can only swing one full suspension bike although I’ve got other kinds of bikes. And right now I’m riding with my son a bit and he likes the bike parks so that was a factor too in going a bit bigger. But who knows I might be better off with a 429. All bikes are fun so it doesn’t matter too much!

Glad you brought this up. If you look at my strava you'll see I had a small switchblade for over a week. In the end, climbing was just a little to cramped. Descending was a blast and honestly, If I had ever decided to go with a Yeti SB140, I really would have gone with a small. For some reason, the small sb140 was perfect!

Less difference between the Pivot bikes... the T429 out guns the Ripley on the descents where the SB and Ripmo are about the same... Ripley fells the most playful and sports... light feeling under the rider!
