Hey Fig Fam,
This is a comprehensive episode.
I go over how much your fig tree can grow year over year. I've included examples how tall a fig tree will grow, from a rooted cutting to a 1 year old tree: the norms, what to expect and the extraordinary to how much they can grow in a year. I show examples of how a young fig tree grows in a container up to a to a mature in-ground fig tree.
I discuss the "Three Year Rule," when do expect fruit, what rejuvenation pruning does to a mature tree. How a mature fig tree grows and also how much a mature fig tree grows. I also discuss how a mature and prolific with fruit 3 year old fig tree in a container looks and how good it's fruit can be!
**Check at the end for a fruit tasting of my mature patio grown Ponte Tresa Fig. and show how a fig tree can grow its whole life happily in a container.**

I was rooting hundreds of fig cuttings and other fruit varieties over this winter. Many fig cuttings took roots , but many of them also died for various reasons. We had some cold snaps up to May this year in the High desert California, so all the small trees were stalling till May, and only started growing mainly in the last 3 months. Right now I have a few dozens of fig trees growing in 5-15 gal pots. A few of them I bought from the nurseries ( the varieties that I failed to root the cuttings). In my climate, I found the fig cuttings growing much faster in the 5 gal pots comparing to the ones in the 1 gal pots , so I potting them up in 5-15 gal pots. Right now I have many fig trees are at 3-4-5 ft tall, all are from this year cuttings, about the the same height with fig trees in your 2 year fig pots. The growing speed also depends on the varieties. VDB, Black Jack, Adriatic JH, Olympian, YLN are growing fastest. The ones that were put in the raised beds growing much slower comparing to the ones in pots which is strange to me. Some fig pots I put in the shade with only a few hours of sun a day. They've growing at the maximum speed and fruiting, but the fruits are small, so I'm not sure if they are going to make it this year. Some of the fig varieties marked " like dry weather" also do better with humidity. I move the pots around to avoid desert sun. The one that growing at maximum speed are the ones with less sun and more humidity ( spray water on the ground, the fence, wall,... around they every day to increase the humidity and they seemed to love that.

wow very cool set up. I love to hear about your success with your fig trees and adding humidity for them to help them grow. It is ridiculously humid here in Wilmington, NC and though it helps with growing the fig trees, the humidity really takes a toll on the fruit. funny you mentioned only a few hours of direct sun exposure, You're so right figs can thrive with only a few hours of direct sun per day expecially in climates that have a higher UV index. Thank you!

@@Philsfigs thank you Phil! And thank you for your channel 😊 I lived in Wilmington in 2009-2013, went to cpcc, such a nice town! Quick question, will figs be shipped in pots or some kind of back with some soil?

@@olenalanska6318 Hey! The trees are in 1 gal containers and will be shipping in boxes. Generally with the boxes I use, they hold up to 2 trees per box.

If you're going to cut your tree down at the ground. Do an air layer above and save the rest of the tree

Fantastic reminder that you can do this. Especially if the tree growth is healthy it's a great way to propagate.

I have several LSU Purples....They died back to the ground last winter and now are 6-8 feet tall and the figs are WONDERFUL! The squirrels get ALL of our pecans.

It's an amazing skill fig trees have to grow back every year. They can grow as a tree or a bush. LSU has some really tasty varieties.

All my varieties of cuttings I did this year from fig pop grew like that exception and are 6’ and that’s with pinching. I think the soil, fertilizer, pot size and sun are the key. Thanks for sharing another good video. Please video some of the Figapalooza this weekend.

Heck yea. You've nailed it on the head. The foundation you give your fig tree well determine it's overall health and growth throughout the year.

Phil, do you do any notching to encourage branching?
@Philsfigs
@Philsfigs 20 күн бұрын
I don't notch necessarily, but I do prune significantly for cuttings and for structuring a fig tree. Branches on a fig tree grow off of the nodes at the base of every leaf righ next to where the fig grows. if I top a fig tree often times a node below that cut will grow out as a new branch.

The title got my attention. I have four Brazilian figs that came from my sister's tree last fall. They were less than a foot tall in the spring. One of them now (Sept.) has four branches that are six feet tall and is producing many hand-sized figs already this year. The other three are only two feet tall with no fruit. The one huge producer is the only one in part shade. I didn't think it would do anything in the shade. Boy was I wrong.

Hey that sounds like a happily growing fig with a nice breba crop if figs growing on the branch. Trees grow surprisingly well in partial shade. They do like full sun but if you live in warmer sunnier tropical climates they will do just fine in partial shade!

Do you do any fig consultations? i have a fig that seems to not be doing well. idk why. Is that possible? I could send a photo and explain what i think is happening and you could comment your thoughts.
