Here's some information on the arborvitaes from this video:
Variety: Thuja plicata x standishii 'Green Giant'
Size: 25-30' tall by 8-10' wide (tag info, will get larger with time)
Hardiness: Zone 4 (some sources say zone 5)
The smaller row was planted in the spring of 2019 and the second is planted in spring of 2020. The amount of sun makes a huge difference between how fast and how well these trees can grow.

Great choice for a screening plant. I always like the feathery leaf evergreens.

For shade use high reflective mylar!! Slow release fertilizer spikes 15-15-15 Jobe's in spring, summer and fall. Will help the shorter ones catch up. I put mine in the mulch mound. My trees were planted at 6' last year and are now 8', even the partially shaded one under my oak! Mine are 10 ft apart...want the buggers to be big as possible. Zone 7A. Yours are close together and may be competing for nutrients.

Ok I have a 12’ with two leaders. Might be higher. Wish I knew about removing leaders. Love green giants.

Hey, when you say they will eventually get pruned the same? Are you going to top them to keep everything at the same height?

Loved the video Joshua. Where did you buy the Standishii variety? I am looking for a couple more. Also, curious how far apart did you plant them? I have several for a hedge and a couple as specimens planted around the property. They truly grow 3+ feet a year in full sun, and am anxious to see how the specimens grow. Such gorgeous foliage and is deer resistant here in RI

All green giants are standishii, as they are a cross between thuja plicata (western red cedar) and thuja standishii (Japanese thuja)

I actually just learned about this in a class, you are correct! I have gotten them confused at the garden center before when it looked like the variety name was standishii. Now I know that to be false

When do you start watering? I just put down plant tone but do you wait til May to consistently water?
@JoshuasGarden
@JoshuasGarden Жыл бұрын
It depends on the climate that you have. Here in southern New England, we tend to get quite a bit of moisture in the spring, so it’s not really necessary to water until about May. Also, the row of arborvitaes that I planted are pretty well-established at this point, so we don’t water them on a very consistent basis. This year I will only water them if we have a drought.

I have seen many other hedges around here spaced just as close. I can say that planting this close likely decreases the lifespan of these shrubs if kit properly cared for, but it will be some before it becomes any sort of an issue
