I passed my test back in 1981, and the more you drive, the more proficient you will become as a driver. Sitting your driving test, has to be one of the most nerve wracking experience your likely to face. Staying calm and focussed, is extremely challenging, your desperate to pass your test, and if you pass, its a most uplifting experience, like a weight has been removed from your shoulders. Being told you have not come up to the required standard, is like knowing you have accidentally left that winning lottery ticket in the washing machine, and seeing the cycle wizzing round. Passing your test today, is a lot more difficult than it was forty years ago, as back then you had no theory test, just the driving test. Still your a bag of nerves when your trying to stay focussed, with a total stranger analysing your every move and gesture

Just fyi, I got a minor for 'Progress - Appropriate Speed' and I was not going slow. In fact, as soon as I finished, the examiner quipped that I was Lewis Hamilton because I was going so fast during the test (but stayed within the legal limit) which he does not see often (I am an experienced driver). What I'm saying is that the testing criteria are for the most part standardised, but there is a somewhat large amount of discretion the examiners have. Also as you explained the definitions are not the same for everyone. I would say up to 15% of the mark is discretionary which can fail you even if you know how to drive. PS: you might ask why am I still watching these videos after I passed? well, YT recommends them and I like the content.

I did my test in 1978 I was really nervous. 5 minutes into my test I had to pull out of a difficult junction (in a 30 limit zone) that had limited visibility, I inched out into the road and as I pulled out a car came from the left at about 50mph I had not alternative but to floor it and smoke the tyres to get out of the way of the car from the left. From this moment I thought I had failed the test and carried on. At the end of the test the examiner asked me how I thought I had done. I told him I know I have failed because of what happened at the junction. He replied No you have passed if you had touched your brakes I would have been in hospital at best, and you would have failed I recommend you take your advanced test.

I worry that you are just validating the crazy "accelerate out of trouble" brigade. You need to clarify that you were turning right - I've seen too many drivers accelarate TOWARDS oncoming cars to get into a closing gap when overtaking.

@@SmileyEmoji42the car appeared from the left and was obviously speeding, the learner had obviously already pulled out. Unless the learner suddenly decided to drive on the right, obviously it was a right turn. Well done for the 'accelerate out of trouble' brigade. Lucky to get such a reasonable examiner. I failed my first test (1982) in a similar situation, but barely across the white line when car suddenly appeared. Examiner and me hit brakes at same time.

One story I had on my first test (I'm in Clacton very close to Colchester) I was almost failed for not getting up to speed fast enough on a national speed limit road (I actually failed for clipping the outer curb on a roundabout on the same road), on that road I think I was doing 40 which of course is not right and luckily within that failure I was able to correct this issue but in combination of clipping a curb out of nerves and the speed looking back I was not ready for that test, it's important for anyone waiting to take their test Todo it when your ready and more importantly when your instructor is ready, Thank you Richard for this video even for a driver who past their test month's ago now these still help to improve my own driving

I got a minor on my test for doing 30 in a 40. We emerged from a side road and I must have missed the sign. Examiner let me drive for a bit and then asked if I was aware it was a 40. I said thank you and brought my speed up. I definitely think there's something to be said for it's better to be too slow than too fast. I'd have much rather got that minor for 30 in a 40, than a major/serious for 40 in a 30!

To make complete beginners worry about constantly staying within 2mph of the speed limit is counterproductive and dangerous. There are so many things to worry about when driving, but the difference from the posted speed is never one of them. Your goal for speed is to stay safe by smoothly following the actual flow of traffic whenever possible. If you are in a queue of trucks and suddenly see the posted speed change from 50 to 35, is it your priority to slow down as soon as possible, or to match the speed and not cause an accident? Inappropriate speed is only a symptom, anyway. Stepping on the gas pedal of a slow driver is hardly going to make them better... The decision reduce the assessment someones ability requires to a checklist (and, even worse, to PUBLISH it), only demonstrates a complete lack of understanding of how to test.

I still remember my first day behind the wheel, back in California aged 15 (almost 60 years ago) and after about 10 minutes in the school car park having to turn left into a relatively major road with a speed limit of 40mph [just checked on Google maps to confirm]. As soon as I'd completed the turn, my instructor told me I must get up to speed and not impede other vehicles by driving too slowly 🙂 I also remember my first day driving after returning to the UK in 1973; I bought a [cheap!] Ford Anglia and had to drive it back to my grandmother's house from Colchester to Copford - I knew the route as I'd ridden along it multiple times...but I hadn't noticed part of it went through a 'bus only' junction LOL - oops! - I was lucky and wasn't stopped and got back safely. I did pass my California driving test, my UK driving test, and my UK motorcycle test, all on the first attempt.

I know examiners go by the speedo in Norway too, but I think they should consider the actual speed. Especially if the car is at the higher end of over-read. Then you are going significantly slower, and might cause annoyance provoking dangerous situations. I used to have a neighbor, insisting to drive indicated speed never faster than the speed limit, usually 5-10 km/h below or even slower. He refused to listen when people told him "but your car indikate almost 10% faster than your actual speed". That's what you get when there's rarely tickets for slow speed.

I drove for many yrs in England before migrating to Canada (Ontario, to be specific). I've driven to New York a couple of times too. It's great to be reminded of driving standards in the UK, which are just incomparably higher than in North America. In Ontario (and I'm sure in other provinces too), you basically do as you wish, especially if you happen to be in front. I'm nor sure what they do for their tests, but it can't be very much because most of the familiar precautions in the UK (e.g., MSM, looking over your shoulder, not forcing others to take evasive action) are literally unknown here. You have to keep your eyes peeled (much more than in the UK) because someone is going to cut in without (and sometimes before) signalling. Oh, and you can drive or overtake in any lane, BTW. Moreover, people don't appreciate the basic courtesies that British drivers take for granted, such as not blocking people's entrances or "letting others in." They just don't seem to take road safety seriously here at all, and sometimes I can't help concluding that all you need to pass your test here are: aggression, impatience and recklessness. Which may explain why insurance for a modest car can be as high as CAD9000 per year for a new driver.

The examiner wants to see that the candidate has control over the car, at all times, and also is aware of their surroundings, and other drivers. Drive too slowly, in a national speed limit area, and your likely to get penalised for inappropriate driving, Your supposed to keep up with traffic, not slow the traffic. Break the speed limit, by driving too quickly, and the candidate will not only fail their test, but also receive penalty points. Its straightforward, drive within the speed limit, but never above it

I have a speed question for a van which I've not seen addressed anywhere. I know the van limits are lower for many classes of road. I was told that the limit for built-up areas was 30 (like cars). I don't know how that interacts with signed speed limits, though, if it's different to the case with cars. If I'm in a built up area and there's a 40 or 50 posted, can I go at that speed, like in a car? I thought that would be common sense, but I notice that for HGVs (which I'm not driving!) there's a limit of 40 for single lane roads outside built-up areas. Some of those are signed 50 and I suppose the HGV still have to go only 40 in them? This weird HGV limit has now confused me as to how I should be interpreting the rest of the chart for other vehicle types. So (other than cars, which I understand) in what circumstances/vehicles do you travel at: a. the limit given for the vehicle type EXCEPT where the sign gives an explicit speed vs; b. the LOWER of the vehicle limit and the signed speed?

"Give them enough room to fall off their bicycle" 😂 I know it wasn't meant to sound passive aggressive but it still made me lol

😂 It's the amount of space I tell my pupils to leave when overtaking a cyclist.

Just passed with a couple minors on this exact thing (unfair ones imo, not going to ruin my instructors car going over rectangular speed bumps at 30 mph 🤣). Anyway, your videos have been super helpful throughout

I was told by my Instructor that I should always check my mirrors before changing speed, especially slowing. Is this a minor if I forget to do it?

That showed everything that is wrong with 20mph zones - To keep a car at 18-20 requires a lot of looking at the speedo even for experienced drivers and every moment looking at the speedo is a moment that you are not looking out for trouble. It must be terrifying for learners.

Can you use speed limiter in a driving test too? (My car has cruise but not limiter and cruise will only set if you apply it at 20+ making it useless for 20 zones)

I'm sorry to hear that, they expect you to make the most of the speed limit when it's safe to do so.
