You did a great job Becca. Don't let the faults get to you. Richard couldn't give you a license even if you passed, so it's much better to fail on a mock and learn from mistakes rather than encounter those kinds of situations for the first time on your real test. I also imagine that being on camera made you a little more anxious. You drive better than a lot of the people on the road with a license, let's be honest!

For Becca I'd advise one thing regrding parking: Lines are NOT walls, so if there aren't any cars next to that parking slot, don't care about crossing lines as long as you park normally and not like BMW X6 driver taking 6 spaces.
@rufusgreenleaf24662 жыл бұрын
It's because a lot of learners get taught to imagine cars parked in them spaces so it would make it easier to park if there were. Unfortunately this can skew a learners mindset when on a test.
@jimjamjee32202 жыл бұрын
@@rufusgreenleaf2466 yeah, with all bays empty surely you can forward park and then simply reverse straight back
@rufusgreenleaf24662 жыл бұрын
@@jimjamjee3220 Yea i do this almost all the time. I also (when empty) go through a bay and into another so i'm reverse parked without reversing. Although if i did that on a lesson i would have gotten moaned at "if a car was parked there you would have hit it". It gets the learners in a busy carpark mindset but sometimes it's just easier to do it alternative ways.
@TheSimCaptain Жыл бұрын
It's interesting that I, and almost everyone I see reversing into parking bays, first go past the space by a little amount and point the car at a 45-degree angle away from the space to make it easier to park correctly. That is also recommended in a book about advanced driving that I read. Yet, after my wife passed her test (in an auto), she stopped well past a space and at right angles to it and then needed to put on full lock to get in. Is this taught by instructors because it's deemed unsafe to get too close to other cars parked in the bays opposite the one you want to use?
@Teverell6 ай бұрын
I remember my instructor saying it's easier to park next to a car because you can see it, than to park next to an empty space where it's hard to see the line. Going forward to line up and then coming back straight also helps, and I think that's the point Becca messed it up because she was so nearly in that space.

That pothole on the side of the road was a trap. If you haven't driven that road before, you'd hit that in similar situation no matter how experienced driver you'd be, there wasn't room to go past the oncoming car with a trailer without stopping/or hitting the pot hole. How could you know to stop completely, you cannot see the hole soon enough, or then you'd be driving like 15 mph and that's way underspeeding in that road.

Watching this and remembering my test I feel nervous, even though I passed first time over a month ago with just 3 minors. My instructor and my examiner were both amazing but I found it less stressful with the examiner than I did the instructor, I guess because they didn’t know my habits. I thought I could never pass because I just felt sick every time I thought about having to take the test. I remember my mock test in Poland (for obvious reasons of being a Pole), everything was going good enough that examiner would pass, but I messed up at the end phenomenally: See, there is a 2-lane road with a little road going to exam centre. It allowed me to go 70kph and I naively thought I'd be able to overtake a truck while uphill. I was going on a left lane trying to depserately overtake a truck while crossing 2 junctions, which would be classified as a fail due to clogging left lane, but after realising I wouldn't be able to overtake I've returned on a right lane and while my instructor was rebuking me about that I forgot about that road leading to exam centre WHILE I had a right indicator on AND there was a car on that road. If not a wisdom of that lad we'd have a car kiss. Rebuking of me increased. But at least we don't have to pass internal exam to apply for state exam, so very nice from lawmakers. Meanwhile I've gotten the state exam almost perfectly, I would count a minor for myself for entering road with a 30kph limit with 40-45kph (saw it too late and started braking kinda aggresively) and half-minor performing perpendicular parking not the best, but not bad enough to count a minor.

I don't have such a luxury as I drive a 2.9 tonne GVW van so would be restricted to 60 on that dual carriageway anyhow. I think the only road classification where I'm allowed to do 70 is on motorways.

I also found on mock tests that when I knew I’d made an error other errors followed for likely because I was dwelling on the error instead of focusing on what I needed to be focused on. It’s part of the learning process and that’s where good instructors come in. It’s funny that some of the best drivers tended to make more mistakes, I guess you do learn more from mistakes.

Couple of mistakes, couple of gaps in knowledge (seems to have been exacerbated by her being flustered due to nerves), but still better than a good portion of drivers I see on the road, all mistakes are easy fixes. Well done Becca, brave for agreeing to be filmed

wow! its much stricter these days, I reverse parked onto the pavement where the kerb sloped towards the road and nearly hit a woman pushing a pram , I put the car in neutral applied the handbrake , turned off the engine, got out and apologised to her, I passed on the basis of making that apology. I think it would definitely be a fail nowadays.

Mounting the pavement is almost always a fail.

cant believe she failed for the 35mph in the 30, she seems like a rlly good driver, and i probably would’v passed on the right of the island aswell!!
@oojimmyflip2 жыл бұрын
The van had his warning lights on he could have broken down just before the Island , what then? surely passing safely on the other side of the Island would be acceptable then?
@ConquerDriving2 жыл бұрын
She may have got away with that speed being close to the speed limit change, but as I noted in the video, if it could possibly be a fail then I will call it a fail.

between 38 and 40 minutes long! Some of it was forwarded on and she did well over 40 minutes - I think she was amazing and probably didn't get her serious fault until after the time (41.24) This was over 40 minutes! ... in my opinion, she passed! I'm loving these video's

I noticed when reversing, Becca didn't look out the back windscreen which is what my instructor would pick up whenever I do this maneuver. She did very well in a lot of areas though but I'm glad I could see what type of faults are considered minor, serious and dangerous before taking my test

Her observations where very good in my opinion, she was aware of her surroundings and I don't feel that anyone could have snuck up on her without her noticing. Generally for accuracy your mirrors give the most help with regular checks around to see if anyone is coming.

My new favorite youtube driving instructor because he said 'synchromesh'
@robin1987100 Жыл бұрын
I like 'simple' inventions, a synchromesh ring is a very cheap component that has made the use of manual gearboxes 10x easier. It allows you to select any gear while the car is moving, regardless of engine RPM. In the old days your granddad had to put the gearbox in neutral first, then bring up the clutch, accelerate the engine to the RPM matching the gear he's trying to select and THEN press the clutch again and select the next gear. This is particularly difficult when, for example, going from 4th gear to 2nd gear while approaching a roundabout. Reverse is typically not a synchronized gear, if you try to select reverse while the car rolls forward you WILL hear a noise (try it, in your instructors car). If the car is rolling backwards while you select first gear, this will not happen, because forward gears are fitted with synchromesh rings.

From what I've read online and seen on other tyre review sites, there are some differences between US and Europe/UK terms. For example, an All Season tyre in the UK, is designed for all seasons, including winter and will have the TPMSF mark. Whereas All Season tire in the US is actually not really suitable for winter and will not have TPMSF mark. To get a US tire with the TPMSF mark, you need an All Weather tire. Confusing, so take in to consideration when watching or reading tyre reviews online. Here in the UK, most tyres on offer are Summer tyres, with a small handful of winter tyre options, and more recently, a selection of All Season tyres with the TPMSF mark. Our main roads are generally treated for snow and ice, and as you say, winter tyres are not mandatory here. Problems start if you live in a more rural area, away from the main roads. I personally have just replaced my Goodyear Eagle F1s for Goodyear Vector 4 gen-3: an All Season tyre as having driven a car with Winter tyres, I can tell you that whilst they make a difference, the amount of extreme weather in my area calling for Winter tyres is limited, so as such, I think the All Season tyre is a good compromise here. If I lived in Scotland or the Lake District, I would be more likely to consider Winter tyres.

UK roads baffle me, there are so many weird signs, road signs and road lines. You can also park completely on the road which is illegal in Australia so i found that weird, and you had to drive on the opposite side of the road or in the middle to pass them. In Australia you have to park in parking spaces that are on the side of the road or in a carpark, but our parking spaces along the road don't overlap onto the road, they are off to the side of it. And also the slowest she was driving was around 20mph which is ~32kph, the slowest speed limit on a normal road in Australia is 40kph which is in a school zone during school hours, but other than that its 50kph in the backstreets or 60kpk on main streets in a town. I also did not know what a miniuntilIt looks like a living nightmare to drive in the UK compared to Australia.

6:50 I think you meant to say "synchronizer". Synchromesh is simply the fact that all the gears are rotating at the same time. The reason it doesn't blow up is that only of the output gears can be directly connected to the output shaft at a time, and the synchronizer is the device that brings the speed of the output gear and the output shaft together. Since 1st gear has so much torque, a minute difference in rotational speed between the output gear and output shaft will be magnified, hence the extra strain on the synchro as you mentioned.
@ConquerDriving2 жыл бұрын
I've heard the synchroniser be called a synchroniser and a synchromesh. It depends who you speak to and what you read.

Becca, some of it is feeling pressure because it's test conditions. My mock test 2 weeks ago was my worst drive in months, I clipped 2 curbs , it unravelled. Xxx

I remember my first mock test. My instructor, like you is overly critical, one because of how high his standards are, and two, he likes to over prepare his learners because better is always better. I failed my first mock test and I beat myself up about it for days afterwards, but it was a massive learning curve and an eye opener to just how easily you can fail a driving test. I was on a road with multiple mini roundabouts and the view to the right was restricted by cars, on one of them I was going a bit too quick and I didn’t have time to look and stop, inevitably, a car was coming out from the right hand side, I should have been ready to give way. I got a serious for it (annoyingly the first and only fault on that mock test as well).. and I knew I deserved it. I simply hadn’t seen the car approaching so I should have gone slower to give me enough time to look and stop it necessary. Funny enough, on my actual driving test, I went down that very road that I failed my first mock test on and I remembered my fault on that road and handled it appropriately, and I passed. So it does just go to show how valuable mock tests are. Mock tests are hard at the best of times. I’m pretty sure I stopped breathing for small chunks of time during my mock tests.. and most definitely on my actual test, and I for sure couldn’t imagine being recorded without losing the ability to human whilst crumbling under the pressure. I felt Becca did an amazing job. She’s so critical of her driving but I thought she drove so well and smoothly past the faults. Don’t down play your abilities, it’s clear you’ve worked hard and it’s clear that you are a good driver. Especially under pressure, which, I think, takes some doing!

I think doing 62 mph in a 70 zone should NOT be a minor. It's not a target It's a limit. Got my test in an Automatic this Thursday. These vids are great!! I got kinda forced into a bus lane last time and failed but only 4 minors. Doing test in County not City Test Centre this time AND auto. Driven to Devon, Hunstanton and Skegness and back to Midlands in a manual. Just test day nerves so gone for Automatic.

OK so at the risk of sounding stupid... at 34:12 she approaches the roundabout with her right signal on, but the lane she is in has a straight arrow to enter the roundabout. A right signal indicates a later exit but there are only 2 exits, one is at 2 0'clock and the other is essentially a u-turn. I understand mini roundabouts don't require left indication prior to exiting but at 34:03 the silver van, 34:13 the white van and at 34:21 the black car don't indicate as they are essentially crossing the roundabout. Anyway my point is, if it was me I wouldn't have gone when Becca did, nor would I have indicated right, and I probably would have a few minors because of it. She did well to read where the white beamer at 34:38 was heading. EDIT: Just realised its a roundabout from hell with like 10 roundabouts surrounding a larger roundabout... there's definitely a roundabout enthusiast working for that city council omg. So to my understanding you indicate right to enter the megabout, indicate left in the left lane to stay on the megabout (even though no-one will see it) and indicate right in the right lane to leave the megabout... right?
