How fast you have to run in a 2hr Marathon

I’ve been aiming to make a video about running for a while now, but it’s been very difficult to decide exactly which element of running to focus on.
Purely by chance I was in London on the day of the 2017 London marathon, where I watched Daniel Wanjiru storm home to win in a 2:05:48 time. That got me thinking about the 2hr concept and as I knew Nike were attempting it, I thought it would be fun to actually break down and demonstrate exactly HOW FAST the elite runners go. The aim of this little video is a fun way to make you to understand exactly how quick you would need to run, in order to cover 26.2 miles in 2hrs.
Couple of people have been asking for KM pace:
6 minute miles = 3:44 per KM
4:34 minute mile = 2:51 per KM
Try everything I’ve said at home and see for yourself!

@@user-ki4xw2rb8q Many sprinters get more attention than long distance runners. Sprinting is impressive, but it is pain for a few seconds and sometimes a minute or two. But marathons or long distances, once the lactate and pain settles in, you have to make sure your body doesn't say no for a very long time. Long distance runners may not be as fast or impressive as Sprinters, but I can assure that long distance running takes the same amount of effort, maybe even more in my opinion.

Wow! It just boggles the mind. I'm older and can do 20 km on the treadmill for maybe 15 seconds and then I have to hop off and lower the speed while exhausted and trying to catch my breath in agony. Then I need a few minutes to settle down before trying that again. So to run basically my top speed for 2 hours is mind blowing. Not even if I was being chased by a velociraptor could I do that for 2 minutes let alone 2 hours.

@@maskarone a 68 second 400m is far more superhuman (although for any person who specializes in that distance its ridiculously slow) than a 17 second 100m. Reaching 21 kph can be done within say 3-5 steps so it really wont cost you any noteworthy amount of time as its a pretty low speed (for a sprint). But to hold that speed for 400m is on a completely different level..
@agenthoini
@agenthoini 5 жыл бұрын
@@maskarone obviously holding the pace for 2 hours is the superhuman part, dont think thats where our slight difference comes from :D But i fail to see how the 100m example is more impressive. If i run a 17 second 100m ill be a bit out of breath but thats it. Rationally i know i wouldnt be able to hold that pace for very long but physically im still feeling good after 100m so that experiment wouldnt really leave an impression on me. However if i run a 68 second 400m my legs are about to no longer hold me. To then imagine they do that over 100 times seems much more impressive to me but maybe we just feel different about that :D

When I was in decent shape, in my 40’s, I would take 15 mile bicycle rides along the essentially flat Erie canal. I rode a steel frame, all terrain bike. A good quality bike but by no means a racer. I weighed about 220 lbs. I would average around 15-17 miles per hour. This really was just fine. These guys run about 12.8 MPH for 26 miles plus. @Harry Knows It's easy to balance, down to about 3mph or 5km/h, not sure why it would be hard to do it at 10mph/16km/h. 10mph is an easy ride, indeed, but just as long as you're on flat road. Add to this a slight grade and it would be hard to keep 10mph for over 40 kilometers. Also, it depends on what type of bicycle you're using - you can't compare road bike to mountain bike, which takes a lot more effort to keep on certain speed.

Awesome vid, keep up great work. When I was in high school, our PE class broke down the WR marathon pace into 400m splits. You had to at the split time for as you could. About half the class didn't complete that first lap in time, most of the rest dropped out after the 2nd and 3rd laps. Myself and a mate successfully completed 5 laps, but finished sixth a few seconds outside the required time. First 2 laps were relatively easy, 3 and 4 we were pushing hard, and laps 5 and six felt like a flat out sprint. For us mere mortals, it's impossible to appreciate how quick these guys can run 42.2km in. Superhuman.

13mph is the fastest setting on the treadmills I use. tf... I can only run that max for 1.5 min. You're telling me that they run that speed for almost 2 hrs straight. Not to mention treadmill running is much easier than running normally bc you dont need to propel forward.

SuprDez _ too bad it’s only Nike athletes. If you think about it, Kipchoge has the 4th fastest marathon PR in the world. Having Kimetto, Kipsang Mutia, Kiprotich, and Bekeley all attempt at the same time would have produced it the first time around
@ytbaccount87

kipchoge, has the second fastest marathon pr. The number 2 dude ran it at the boston marathon which does not count, since the course does not meet the standards for a marathon course. but anyway kipchoge at the time had by far the best chance in the world to run sub 2. kimetto had way better races(location and weather) and only beat kipchoge by 7 seconds. that said i'm not sure kipchoge can be the first sub 2 hours. he is already relatively old.

Chasing the car doesn't do justice. Cars speedometers are always set 1-3mph slower than the car is moving for safety reasons. Also running on treadmill is far easier. On land, if you run 20kph, you have to push trough air resistance at 20kph, where on a treadmill you have 0kph resistance. Its equivalent to running with a 20kph tailwind outdoors.
@SamWade

Clemens Schrage That's not true for most people running a marathon is quite damaging, never mind doing it in two hours. Those elite marathon runners are built very differently from the average person, ie they have very tough feet/ankles/knees/hips and they're generally very light.

It all comes down to muscle and bone structure. Kenyans are good at long distance running because they have thin bones and short muscle bellies and long tendons, which allows them to more efficiently store and transfer energy from the previous step. This also explains why whites are so good at sports that demand prolonged power generation (like power lifting or climbing) because they have longer and thicker muscles, and shorter tendons, which is good for power generation but bad for power transference. And also drugs. Everyone at the top takes PEDs, it's unavoidable.

Damn, 4:34 mile pace for 26.2 miles... just shows how far the skill gap there is for running especially when many actual runners cant even do that for 1 mile. I could barely crack 4:25 mile pace my previous season in track and I tried my hardest to get there; I cannot begin to fathom running slightly slower than that pace for another 25.2 miles...
