It makes you and others unique in a great way. I love learning from people like you because it teaches me what it was like before I was born along with great advice in every day life. I once saw a license plate that said "not old. just better " My point is don't let people younger than you tell you different because You will always have more experience than they will ever have. The younger generation is missing out on the cool vintage things out in the world.

On the books, it describes about car brands that I've never heard of such as Cord, Packard, Desoto, Delahaye, Bricklin, MG, etc. and I'm fascinated with them all. I also collect and use modern things as well. I think modern things and vintage things are unique in their own way. I love learning in general. There is so much to find out in the world.

After 30 years of carrying a little rubbermaid bin with spare _"important bits"_ behind the drivers' seat of the van, I can report that the little bin of parts (and a couple screwdrivers and a pair of pliers) has saved me numerous times at the side of the road and got me on my way again in minutes! Spare electronic box (I'm still running my '95 manufacture-date chrome box, but never hurts to carry a spare,) a spare pickup coil (saved me from a weak spark once,) a standard black coil (had a couple of the 140001 yellow ones die on me on the road, saved me multiple times,) a spare ballast resistor (I've driven home a couple times with a bypassed resistor, I used to just _always_ run the chrome box with a _"big yellow"_ without a resistor, but it'll blow those coils up if you leave accidentally leave the ignition on for more than a moment or if you run too long at low RPM, so that's just a dumb idea on the street.) There's a spare plug wire. There's a spare distributor cap and rotor. (Cap saved me on the way to the courthouse to fight a ticket once. Had a broken rotor tip another time from accidentally whacking the distributor cap with my knee while driving with the doghouse off. Those have saved me on the road before. The spare sparkplug, I don't think I've ever used. Spare voltage regulator on highway trip? Saved me twice. (Van now has dual electrical systems, two regulators, two alternators and two batteries, one for the vehicle, one for accessories. That's the bees knees!) Spare "repaired" Holley red and blue fuel pumps? Changed those out on the side of the road on three separate occasions so far. Maybe I should start buying Carter pumps? Those Holly ones only seem to last for a decade or so each... 🤔 Bwaaa haaa haa🤣 The whole bin of spare, old, _"junk"_ parts would _still_ basically fit in your pocket, even though it's *_fancy_* 1970s *_ELECTRONIC_* tech.... and *I likes it that way!* Now get off my lawn, you young whipper snappers!!! 🤣

Your missing a pair of rusty old vice grips in your tool set, that is the number 1 most important tool you could bring, can get most bolts and clamps off with it and can be used to pinch off a leaking brake line or possibly a heater hose in case of an emergency leak "repair", can also be used as a battery terminal in extreme circumstances as well. And of course can be used as a replacement window crank or door handle.

However, I also love my friend's 1986 Dodge Ramcharger 4x4 with its Edelbrock carburetor, and I helped him with finding TONS of vacuum leaks, fixing those, cleaned, partially rebuilt and properly tuned the carb as well as the ignition system (thank you so much for your videos helping with that!). Haha! That's about what I traveled with when I went out drag racing on cross country trips. I like electronic ignition, so substitute a reluctor, pickup and ignition module for the points and condenser. The reason I traveled with that stuff was from lessons learned at an earlier age. I can remember half freezing to death trudging through snow for several miles to where I could find replacement points, and then making the walk back as well. There was no cell phone to call for help, and people would not stop for hitchhikers like earlier times (unless of course they were attractive women). I think a mindset of more self reliance was required. And yes, I am even older than Tony (now 65).

I left school in 1984, went straight into a garage as an apprentice. I think in a weird way I was lucky to enter the trade at that time. back then it was possible to still buy a car running points and condenser, and carburettor. Electronic ignition, fuel injection and engine management was just starting to become more commonplace, and as such I grew up with both. Nothing makes you appreciate the simplicity of a points ignition system than being stranded somewhere with a failed sensor or 'black box', most of which cost a small fortune compared to a set of points! As for today's plastic junk, yes, they're safe and cleaner, but a lot of component failures will mean a ride on a tow truck, there are few ways to jury rig a fix to keep the car going. Only people from my generation and older appreciate the comfort an old fuel pump and set of points can give on a road trip hahahahahaha

I retired in 2018. I was a Chevrolet mechanic the last 21 years. I think a lot of "technicians" miss the fact that "outside" anomalies mess with electrical systems. Just like dirt, dust, and oil mess with carbureted, points systems... electronic devices mess with circuits, chips, etc. Placement of the battery can effect the performance of nearby components. Most computerized systems are designed like the modular stereo systems we had in our living rooms, back in the day. Each piece relies on another to work properly.

Mk4 vws are knows for having issues with a fuse box that's located above the battery and the wiring around the area of the battery. I got mine when it was 2yo, and put an optima in and it's always had an AGM with me. Open the fuse box ,it looks like new. That's an unseen reason to run an AGM, a problem that happens after years later and really does alot of damage caused by acid fumes.

Yup funny I was dealing with a 92 TBI Truck, checked out the MAP, it was electrically sound but mechanically not, as at revs the engine would hiss and fall flat on power, replaced map it ran up fine.

My up-and-coming nephew knows things about these new cars that are way beyond me. As part of the changing of the guard I offered him a lot of my tools. Things like dwell meters, piston ring compressors, valve spring compressors and such... he was clueless as to what they were for much less how to use them (there were quite a few other "speciality" tools in there) on the flip side he knows more than I will ever know about the electrical side of these new vehicles.

GenX here. Carbs, points, mechanical fuel and timing, governor control transmissions, efi, can bus network, turbos, diesel mechanical / electronic / common rail systems, custom efi tuning, bring it on, I started with cars from the 60's and 70's, and now it's 2019 models with 8/9/10 speed autos, and 50 ECM's in everything. I like the whole spectrum.

Uncle Tony... ya definitely remind me of my pops when he was alive. But that's a different & long story. Heeey TONY YOU FORGOT TO MENTION: Mopar Resister Ballast (that porcelain white bar on the firewall, yea they fail at the worse times 🙁), a box of new fuses...., roll of electrical tape, a few Line wrenches (for fuel lines, brake lines, trans lines), maybe a flaring tool kit?, some spare rubber hoses for fuel, trans lines, a couple brake line compression fittings, a couple mopar spare Left handed lug nuts & wheel studs 🤣 (if ya know ya know 😂), & a couple bright flash lights... (had a few different Mopars where the pos head light switch failed in the middle of no where late at night, & headlights completely stopped working 😬

I don't haul around any parts. I do have an emergency box in my Grand Cherokee though. I keep a set of 1/4 & 3/8 sockets, a tow strap, sets of SAE & metric wrenches, jumper cables, extra brake/turn signal lights, assortment of screwdrivers,a big 🧲 that I found in a car at the wrecking yard. Somebody wrote puzzy on it.😂 And of course duct & electrical tape, a metal coat hanger and a fire extinguisher and a moving blanket, just in case I have to lay on the ground or go underneath my Grand Cherokee. And a tire wrench & 2 ton floor jack, cuz I don't like scissor jacks. Luckily, I've never needed any of that stuff for myself, I've helped others out of a bind though. I built it out of some 3/4 in plywood i found in the road on my way to work at 3am. I built it so its still easy to get my spare tire out and low enough that I can put stuff on top of it,so im not giving up a lot of space. And a portable air compressor. Yeah, that covers it. And an extra dog leash, because I did rescue a lost dog once. Plus, i have a dog and I sometimes forget his at home.

HA HA HA. Tony sat down and rusted up. I know that feeling. Does the youngster know anything about carbs and point ignitions? Have a bit of fun with that. Get a old condenser you replaced as part of a tuneup that is good. When he is their to pick up your daughter, charge it up. Hold it by the wire with your engine running. Put the case against the valve cover and pull a plug wire off and hold it to the terminal for 4 or 5 sparks. Put the plug wire back on and shut the car off. Go find Jr Sample and say "check this out" and toss the condenser toward him. Natural response is to catch it. With the case and terminal in hand it will discharge. Other than wetting his pants there is no real harm done. I like to give the kids a little life lesson. Go into McDonalds for a Saturday morning coffee with Kathy. When you walk up to the till it is pretty much guaranteed to be a 16 year old still wet behind the ears. This young person is most likely to say "Hi". My response is "I am not" with a little insensed tone. 90% chance they will freeze up like a computer screen with a stunned expression on their face. After about 5 seconds ask "did I get you?" Facial expression changes and usually say "I am confused." Analytical thinking does not exist to figure out you are pulling their leg. My Dad was driving his Volvo between Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta, Canada one time. All of a sudden the engine quit. The rubbing block on the points had broken and would not open the points. He was fortunate that about 1/4mile across the field was the farmer's yard. In his collection of old tractor parts was a set of points. The base part was different but the arm with rubbing block and spring fit the Volvo base. Got home on that. Thank God farmers tend to keep stuff that is not totally worn out or broken, just in case.

About 5 years ago I came across a guy in a 55 Chev wagon who was stalled at the side of the road. Pulled over to see if he needed help. Original 6 banger, 3 on the tree, single barrel carb. With aid from my headlights and a crescent wrench and flat-head screwdriver he disassembled the carb until he found a MOSQUITO stuck in the needle! He pulled it out, reassembled carb and was running! Sadly, many of the mosquitoes relatives had gathered for a feast while we were engrossed in the engine ...

I am old. I have a 65 Galaxie 2dr HT Just around 500hp, a 780 396 Chevy Holley 3310 and Headers. I built the FE in 1999. I know all of the FEs are officially extinct and can’t possibly make 500 hp from 394ci. I want to add a set of 3 inch X pipe with C bands, butt clamps U clamping like the car came with, my 40 year old son helped me swap out the Minnesota rusty frame for an excellent home treated with Corroless steel bridge primer and chassis black as close to being dipped as I could do and whilst it was out we replaced every wear part , added gussets, made the panhard link adjustable and enabled the 1965 ( last year in NASCAR) screw jack load adjustment system to be reached by raising the deck lid pulling the rubber plug and using a speed wrench jacking down on the rear springs to set the stiffness of each spring in the rear along with the desired height, replaced the plugs and the VP could be added to the 91 pump gas if needed to the 16 gallon fuel cell. The interior was spartan as I had to rewire from rodent damage. At some point I became a boomer around when my son turned 30 and I was on my own. I am legally blind and now, and some help could be used. I can’t find a local shop who can properly hang an exhaust , I have a 3 inch header collector back Summit X pipe a 3 inch resonator set and a Summit 3 inch center in center out Flowmaster knock offs and a pair of mandrel bent pipes that go out in front of the back wheels. Am I such a boomer that I don’t want a junk Chevy pickup sounding exhaust with blown out glass packs dumping at the rear axle and all migged? I guess I ll be hollering at people to get off my lawn next. My wife thinks I should see the car. I have had that block and trans since we got married.
