Late to the party. Just got an iPad Pro. Looking to switch from my MacBook to all iPad. My question concerns backups and catastrophic recovery planning. The on my IPad folder: Is that just a folder that indicates items “downloaded” from ICloud? Or…is it a separate area that is segregated from the ICloud? Here is real life use case: Let’s say I am creating documents and videos on the iPad. And after creation and use, they reside in the “On my iPad” folder? Are these files NOT being automatically backed up on iCloud? Additionally…should I go in later and add something to a files in the “on my iPad” folder, will those changes be reflected in the ICloud later? Or should I keep Everything in the “Icloud Drive” folder?
@Carl_Pullein3 жыл бұрын
The downloads folder on your iPad as well as "saved to iPad" will only save files locally. They are not backed up in iCloud. You would need to designate a separate iCloud folder to save your files. You will find, though, that a lot of time time, if your using apps like Garageband, your files will automatically save to the cloud.

Thank you again for responding. Your videos motivated me to adopt saving by app. Indeed as I am dismantling my old hierarchy of folders by topic or account the OS figures out what type of document I am filing be it Pages, Numbers etc. However for new documents the iOS system is placing the documents straight to iCloud Drive but not in the specific app folder. I can move the documents into the right folder but it seems like an extra step.
@rickatkinson10002 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl: I checked with Apple. They say that the default action for saving new documents(within the app) is to place the document in the iCloud Drive root level. From there the user can move the file to the location of their choice. The reason existing older files find their way to the respective App Folder is because the document already resides on iCloud Drive. Hmmm. Files is, beyond any shadow of a doubt, Apples worst ever software application. What irks me the most is that their desktop finder is literally perfect. Files is pure crap.

Bad apple. all this time to defend their incompetency.. NOthing pro about an ipad pro.

What a useless video. There is nothing in here that tells you how to organize the file structure.

Files is the messies piece of garbage apple have come up with, well the hole IOS is garbage, i thought this function would make IOS/ipad usable, but they just messed this up as well. i love mac os, that OS just works. However they must have been drunk during the hole process of making IOS.

@@mahnazqaiser3371 All you need do is open the notes app, type and close the notes app. Your note will be saved automatically. All you need worry about is typing your notes. Let Apple take care of everything else for you.

so basically files app is like the file manager on Android
@Carl_Pullein3 жыл бұрын
I guess so. I’ve never used Android, so I unfamiliar with how that works.

@@Carl_Pullein Me too since I only use Android and now I tried ipad, been looking for the file manager and couldn't find it 😂 I went to youtube and found your video. And thats the only time I figure it out 😂 thanks for your video!

It is not. Android file manager gives you full access to device file structure. Files app on iOS is a sandboxed app. If for example you make a folder and put your photos in it, while on Android they will show on gallery, on IOS you have to export to photos app otherwise you cannot see them.
