How foreign meddling destabilizes the Horn of Africa - Exclusive w/ a Djiboutian dissident in hiding

While it’s not often in the news, the Horn of Africa is volatile and often the scene of violence and its countries are victims of international interventions and interference that has played a destabilizing role, from Djibouti and Eritrea to Somalia and Ethiopia. As western imperialism continues to prop up dictators while blocking any moves towards independence, the western-backed Gulf States are transforming the region into a battlefield against Iran and each other.
Why is this region subjected to so much meddling? How is the new Cold War between the US and China playing out on the ground? And why should Americans care? To help us understand these developments, Rania Khalek is joined by Djiboutian dissident in hiding Abdirahman Mohamed Ahmed, an expert on the Horn of Africa who is both from the region and has a strong leftist background.

At Breakthrough News we believe in the power of independent media. Five mega-corporations dominate the media landscape - controlling 90% of what we read, watch and listen to. They control the news cycle, to which social media and even most “alternative” media is forced to respond. We are breaking through that cycle.
We tell the untold stories of resistance from poor and working-class communities - because out of these stories we will construct a different narrative of the world, as it is and in real time.
People’s movements in every corner of the globe are changing history and shifting consciousness. But these movements barely receive any coverage from the corporate media. They need visibility. They need amplification. They need a media arm to break through.
We can be that media arm, but only with your help. Become a Patron and join us on the front lines in the battle of ideas.

True only so far. All capitalist countries try to expand their economic power by any means necessary, ultimately by military means. China is no exception. Besides, some things here just don't add up: I found no information about Eritrea kicking the Israeli military out (Eritrea doesn't recognize the state of Palestine).

@@nurturingglobal2local473 Really, if the bombing option is off the table, then it's your choice to build or not, you can just reject the build. If China is going to bomb you because that you reject their "agenda", then you are fine, right? That agenda looks quite safe to me.

@abenezer getachew....I am Somali and I am sorry about what is happening in Ethiopia these days! As soon as the TPLF left power the country descended into chaos! TPLF secured the country for 25 years, making it the fastest-growing economy in Africa and the most secure and stable country in Africa, free from terrorism and violence! I am sorry for the mass killing and the genocide-like situation in the Tigray region. Aby Ahmed and his cronies are using the Ethiopian federal army, the Eritrean Shabia forces, and the Amhara and Oromo militias against the Tigrai people. This has to stop. This is war crime! @@abenezergetachew4322 I disagree, I think Aby is a new liberal, a CIA, EU and Saudi/Arab stooge who has no idea of what he is doing. Remember the West gave Aby their nobel price, bribing him. Melez was a nationalist and he was no fan of the West, depending more on China but only working with the US to fight the terrorists in Somalia. He died too early, some believe he was poisoned and murdered by the West for working with China. Aby should not have attacked Tigray using Ethiopia's enemies, that is grave mistake! I love Ethiopia religiously, It is my spiritual homeland, I am an Orthodox and pray to God Ethiopia is peaceful and loving again! To be perfectly accurate and fair, it’s not that western imperialism is against democracy. They are very pro democracy- for themselves. But democracy inherently introduces some instability since the citizens might change the government which might result in change of policies etc. This is fine for themselves but because they are also capitalists, especially the US, they don’t like this instability in countries they only consider as markets and origin of resources and not equal to themselves. So that’s why they like that Singapore has been governed by the same party since independence, they like that the Gulf is governed by monarchies, or if all the parties in the democracy mostly have the same pro west position, but dislike the democratic countries who might elect independent leaders - not because they are against democracy but because they like business stability more. The only time they’re suddenly pro democracy in such countries is if those countries are large, and being unified under a stable leadership could result in a great state that could threaten their dominance. Democracy in these states would allow them to interfere and play sides against other sides so they really really want democracy for these countries.

Yes, Israel is highly involved in ethio-egyptian conflict because Israel is already using the Nile water in negev desert as per the 1970s agreement with Anwar saadat to share the Nile water in return for peace with Israel. They call the canal they built under the Suez canal the el salam canal, which means the peace canal. Actually Israel coming stealthily to control the Nile.

The information provided by the guest as regards to the Alshabaab presence in only Jubaland state of Somalia and that Jubaland governor was born in Ethiopia is absurd. Alshabaab controls large swathes within Somalia which is why the government is asking for concerted effort in the fight against the group. The Jubaland governor was born in the present day Galmudug state in Southern Somalia. So, Its apparent that Abdirahman has superficial acquaintance with the region. He should understand every twists and turns as regards to the region's history.
