How Fuel Efficient Is A Daily Driven 2018 VW Golf R? Fuel Economy Tests

Thanks for posting this, interesting to compare. I have a 2018 R 7.5 but in DSG. I think the extra gear makes a big differance. 400 less revs at 100kph which is the speed limit over here in NZ. Mine so far 16,000 kms, is averaging 8.35 L/100km. I use a mixture of 95 and 98 as where I currently live in Queenstown has no 98 octane stations unless I go 40kms away. Usually fill when the light comes on at about 600kms. Best tank has been 7.67l/100km, worst 9.07. I keep a gas record like you do too. Great long distance car and goes anywhere and in any weather i.e skifields and rain which the other hot hatches cant match.

+scollyutube Thanks for watching. It’s difficult to drive the manual efficiently. The car wants you to shift at 2,000 rpm. The area I live in has a speed limit of 120 km/h. Other roads with slower speed limits I get better efficiency. If I drive 80 km/h I’ve seen as low as 6.9 L/100km. Also I’m only driving 220km highway and the rest is city driving. If it was all highway I’m sure I could get more. Anyway if you haven’t already, please subscribe. I promised my viewers if I hit 1,000 subs I’ll go apr stage 2 🙂

I have the exact same model here in Australia. I seem to be getting slightly better fuel consumption. I’m guessing it could be due to the slighter higher 98 octane fuel we have here. I would have thought our high temps here would work against our economy. I generally stay in race mode which I’m sure is detrimental to economy as the car makes more torque at low rpm suggesting it’s getting more fuel. Also, I use a simple app to track fuel. Has all the same info plus it backs up to the cloud.

MitchTube hey thanks for the comment. What gear box do you have DSG or 6 speed? I have the 6 speed, they seem to be less fuel efficient than a DSG. Also with my 6 speed I do not notice a difference in power between eco mode and race mode. Full throttle is the same acceleration regardless of which mode I am in

@@twowheels87 I also have the 6 speed. It could just be in my mind but I feel the car has better torque low down in race mode. ive only travelled 3200 mostly city km averaging 8.2L/100km thus far

Andreus Narain Yes, I’m currently paying $1.659 per litre. The tank is approximately 55 litres. $1.659 X 55 litres = $91.25 Canadian dollars. There are 3.78 Litres in one US gallon. At today’s exchange rate of $1 US Dollar = $1.30 Canadian. That means it is approximately $4.81 US Dollars per US Gallon. And the tank is 14.5 gallon capacity. So $69.74 US dollars to fill my tank up at $4.81 per gallon. Hope this answers your question

Great video. I am strongly thinking of buying a Golf R, I do about 150km on a daily (highway + urban) so I am a bit worried on costs. I currently drive a BMW 328i it has eco mode. I get about 7/100 at 110km/h on my BMW which is also 2.0 engine with a turbo. I want a fast economic car 🤦🏾‍♂️. Just not sure which. But I am loving the Golf R, serriously thinking of buying it. Does anyone no know if fuel management systems really save fuel??

What driving mode were you using for your tests? Chevron 94 or Shell 91 - which one gives you the best fuel efficiency?

+suckapunch To be honest I can’t notice a difference between the driving modes when I’m measuring fuel efficiency. My golf R is the 6 speed manual, fuel efficiency depends majorly on 2 things: when you shift and how quickly you accelerate. Doesn’t seem to matter what driving mode you are in. However on the DSG it would definitely make a difference between Race mode and Eco mode because you’re changing the shift points. Race mode will keep the DSG in the lowest gear to keep the RPM’s up. Also the mk7.5 DSG’s have the 7 speed which gives you better fuel economy at higher speed. My friend has a 2016 Golf R with a DSG and stage 1 APR Tune, he’s getting better fuel economy than I am in my stock 6 speed.

+Kgadile Masemola personally I haven’t had any problems bending rims. But I definitely baby my car and avoid pot holes. However a friend of mine with a 2017 Golf R bent his rim on a pothole in Victoria BC, on prospect lake road.

14 L / 100 km = 16 mpg yikes 8 L / 100 km = 30 mpg better 7 L /100 km = 33 mpg not bad for the fun factor My BEW TDI Wagon 5 speed hits about 45 mpg, it prolly isnt as much fun but to be quite honest I have found on long 600 mile (not kilometer) its not about fun, fun is passing all the gas stations and have a turbo for long uphill climbs through the Appalachians, no need to downshift like in some non turbo cars I've driven. I drove clear straight through from lake Erie down to the outer banks south Carolina on one tank, also have an ALH TDI that is hitting about 52mpg

DEVUNK88 The Car has gotten better now, the best I’ve seen is 6.7L/100 over a distance of 220KM = 35MPG over a distance of 136 miles. I’ll be making an updated video soon. Thanks for watching

@@twowheels87 I had to do the conversion cuz I cant think in kilometers lol. well thats good to know, I edited my comment to include more stats and a little comparison to my MPG's I've been getting in my TDI VWs.... I love them, but sooner or later I will be looking for a newer car and the Golf R or R wagon is up for consideration (they are sharp lookin) if 40mpg where possible I'd seriously consider it since the TDI is no longer offered in the states

DEVUNK88 I love TDI’s I really need to get my 2006 Jetta TDI running again. Although I’m not sure how efficient it will be with a big turbo and big Injectors

@@twowheels87I've wanted an R32 since they were introduced in 2004 I ended up with TDIs which I am quite happy with, I've gotten speeding tickets with them to, they are fast enough to lose your license, so I've decided I dont need anything faster, I also really dislike the sound of racy 4cyl engines, but the golfs are nice inside and out, its just a shame I cant get one with a TDI or a 3.2l or a 3.6 VR6 without a lot of hassle. There may be one model year in the latest body styling with the TDI dunno, kinda hard to find though
