The problem with GAF Solar is that they are in very small markets; I live in Illinois and they don't service the area at all. I was about to pull the trigger on Tesla Solar shingles until I saw GAF and no matter who I talk to at GAF they give a generic response of "No Idea, when we will ever sell them in Illionois" WTH!?!?!?!?! Come-on expand your market and get into Illinois as many roofers I've spoken to hear want to sell your product... I have a 5,500 sq ft roof and want it covered with GAF Solar shingles..... They have until 2023 to get into Illinios or I'm gonna be forced to buy Tesla Solar Shingles...

@CubbyTech2 жыл бұрын
I'd go traditional solar - you'll get 3x the power for the same price. GAF's solution isn't very energy efficient and is prone to output interference by wiring the panels in series.
@marka75192 жыл бұрын
Watts per square foot in that video seem off by ~50%. Looks like they are counting the nail strip portion that contains no pv panels and gets overlapped by the next shingle on installation.

I could see this working on the new house market best. rather then the replacement market adding 10,000 at that point not such a big deal.
@legacyroofingutah97662 жыл бұрын
Yes this is for new home builds or replacement roofing systems. You wouldn't want to have a good roof removed just to put this on. Wait until your roof has exhausted its current life then consider a solar shingle roofing option.

GAF's offering is worthy and better looking than panels but it doesn't hold a candle against Tesla's offering. Both GAF & Tesla's offerings will be evolving, I believe Tesla's v2.5 (or is it v3.5) is being deployed now to Tesla staff to evaluate. And this article suggests that GAF's working on their next generation product. Competition and range is good; we're all the winners for it. PS: Many tree-shaded roofs in that video...

Question are they DIY compatible also what's the cost per square foot
@legacyroofingutah97662 жыл бұрын
Sorry the Tesla Solar Roof is currently not DIY compatible as it is quite a complicated customized install and comes with a very strong warranty only covered when installed by licensed Tesla certified installers. Cost per sqft varies based on roof size, how many of the tiles are solar and how many are non-solar tiles, total solar system watt size, as well as numerous other factors. Below is an article that can give you more information on how the Tesla Solar roof is priced: See affordability section of the article: www.tesla.com/blog/solar-roof#:~:text=The%20typical%20homeowner%20can%20expect,the%20tiles%20look%20the%20same

@@legacyroofingutah9766 since the article was on GAF solar roof panels that's the one I'm trying to find out if it's DIY compatible and how much are they and how do you tie in with GAF regular roofing tiles since I have GAF roofing ready to go on and since they're reasonable depending on the price of the solar panels would determine how many I could get to start with and then I could upgrade from there just remove a few shingles and replace with solar panels as I can afford

In following your link to them makes me Leary of them and as such when I redo my house roof it definitely won't be a GAF roofing shingles as it looks like they won't even cover the warranty on my garage roof since I didn't pay a roofer for his high markup on the shingles and his labor and I've found that any company that you can't contact directly if you have a problem and the roofer has gone out of business with good honest company if that happens will help you if you have any questions or problems we have a company that makes shingles and as long as you install them by the spec's on the package they'll warranty them never had to test that though as their 25 year shingles lasted over 45 years before they finally wore right out first roof I ever did second and third one's lasted about the same time the third one still looked good after 35 years and the new owners bulldozed the garage they were on I've always done my own work so I know it's done right worked for a new home builder and the roofing contractors he hired always had problems with their crew's most had to come back at least twice one roof had to have areas totally redone mine have never leaked and they last until the shingles wear out although they should be replaced sooner the 3 original one's I did are owned by development companies and they had planned on tearing them down for new developments that's why they tore the garage down it wasn't worth putting Money into it for what they could get out from rental maybe if they had planned on renting it for the last ten years it might have been but when you're planning on redeveloping the place it's always a year or so before it's time to redevelope the property but the first developers bought it in the early eighties and it's still rented so it probably paid for itself by now

How would this do in FL.? are they using the seal tab in front bottom of the single and does this seal well to keep from blowing up/then off? Are the connect in parallel or series like Christmas lights? would hate to have one shingle go out then the row is died.
@legacyroofingutah97662 жыл бұрын
Yes these work just like traditional shingles and have a seal down in the front sealing them up tightly to be wind, rain and hail resistant. If one goes out it will not effect the others and can be replaced easily.

Can solar roof tiles be made with metal roof base panel form. Metal roof panels are commonly edge fastened with clips. Putting wood strapping with air flow beneath metal panels would allow natural air convection flow helping to control heat buildup. Protrusions could be easily accommodated with plain none solar panel pieces.

It's a BAD BUSINESS ASSUMPTION that people want better looking solar cells. The FACT IS... having decent looking black frame Solar Panels on one's roof, is NOW a Green Status Symbol and 1/2 the cost of all these solar roof shingle products.
@CubbyTech2 жыл бұрын
Nope! Not good enough. These panels don't have micro-inverters or DC optimizers like traditional systems do. Solar production can be blocked by small debris or shadow. I'll stick with traditional 'ugly' panels which shade the existing roof and house which generate 3x the watts per square foot.

Tesla Solar shingles are made with tempered glass, Solar Roof tiles are more than three times stronger than standard roofing tiles, yet half the weight. They do not degrade over time like asphalt or concrete. These tiles are locked onto the roof directly and much stronger than any other roofing solution all while producing great solar energy for homes. I personally have been on several install jobs; once installed these tiles are very difficult to remove without specialized tools and don't even budge under my 250 lbs of weight. If you see one in person and walk on it as well as understand the install system your opinion will change on how they would handle large snowfall. Few people have actually stood on as well as installed these solar roof's in person themselves. Tempered glass is very strong and durable especially when using Tesla's unique installation method locking them in place for the long haul. If you are considering a higher quality roof and also want solar then the Tesla Solar Tile Roof makes economical sense and looks so much better than any other roof solar solution.

Correction to this reply. We are discussing the GAF Solar Shingle here and not the Tesla Solar Tile roof. My mistake. Please consider this a reply on the Tesla Solar Roofing product rather than the GAF Timberline Solar Shingle product.
@legacyroofingutah97662 жыл бұрын
Water-shedding and warranted Timberline Solar™ is made up of shingles, not panels or heavy tiles. These shingles are water-shedding, strong and warranted to withstand winds up to 130 mph. Rack-mounted solar installations-where the solar is separate from the roof-require the drilling of dozens of holes into the roof membrane. Any resulting damage related to those holes is not typically covered by roof warranties. For homeowners who already know the quality of GAF roofing products, the Timberline Solar™ roof has the same wind and water-shedding warranty coverage as Timberline HD. www.gaf.energy/timberline-solar/

@legacyroofingutah97662 жыл бұрын
Most traditional asphalt roofs last 20-40 years depending on the climate, the solar shingle roof has a 25 year warranty and should last longer than that but after 25 years the solar output efficiency will slowly degrade. This is pretty typical of any solar product and/or roofing product.

Solar for homes will never work as a replacement for electrical systems. Doesn't 70 years show that? We're only blowing hundreds of billions of tax payers money. We need lawyers and guts to go through the u.s. patent office and strip these players who have the knowledge that benefits all and get it out there.

For best looking solar shingles choose the Tesla Solar Tiles, the GAF solar shingles are a middle ground between Tesla Solar Tiles and regular rack mount solar. If my average electric bill is about $200 a month, it’s $2,400 a year. It would take 6.8 years to break even on the cost of that solar roof for $16,500. No thanks!
@groovy19372 жыл бұрын
Also, a vast majority of people don't understand their electric bill. You have fixed costs in the bill just for having service brought to your home plus transmission costs. My actual electricity cost in my bill is 1/2 the total bill, so my $100.00 a month electric bill only contains around $50.00 in electric cost or around $600.00 a year. It would take me 25 years to break even on just the solar install assuming that is lasts that long and we know it won't - the solar panels degrade and loose efficiency. Solar is fine for minor landscape mood light, but it will never work for roofing or be adopted. Jimmy Carter put solar panels on the White House back in 1978 and Reagan ripped them off cause they didn't work. The Left has been pushing solar for 50 years and still no traction cause it isn't efficient or cost effective not to mention what is in a solar panel, it is toxic and bad for the environment and no one mentions that. Electric lighting and the grid and wiring a house/country was adopted much faster 1890's to 1920's cause it actually worked and not pushed by force by the government, same for electric cars - they will only ever be niche market.
@legacyroofingutah97662 жыл бұрын
Solar can last well past 25 years so you would be getting free power from the sun for 18.2 years based on your calculation. You forgot to add in the free energy after it was recouped and still producing for you. A very smart investment in that case. $2400 x 18 years = $43,200 in free energy.
@legacyroofingutah97662 жыл бұрын
Solar has come a long was since 1978 and is very efficient and long lasting. In most energy markets and cities is makes great financial sense. No one with professional solar experience would share this opinion as it is very ignorant and simply untrue. I suggest you do some real world research and find out for yourself.
