Yes, "just get a good installer" can improve chances, but it's not a guarantee. And having known of cases locally of some pretty bad leaks from rack mounts (yes, I know many don't have problems) I would very much be interested in a product that goes on the decking like standard shingles if they have no higher chance of leaks than standard shingles. Looking at the man holding the panel at 11:21, we can determine that the height of the actual photovoltaic portion is less than half, so about 7 inches, and the width needs to have about 3 inches removed from the right side. Rough math shows that the panel would produce about 10.1 watts of power/sq. ft and not ~6 watts.

The problem for GAF is they are targetting composite shingle roofs customers. And composite shingle roofs are relatively cheap compared to alternatives like tile. Tesla targeted homes with tile roofs which are expensive with their SolarRoof product. The price of our Solar Roof was less than the price of a replacement tile roof with solar panels.
@updlate47563 жыл бұрын
Asphalt shingles are used in over 80% of US roofing projects, so I fail to see how this is a problem for GAF... They're targeting what most of us use. Tiles are used in ~5% of US roofs. What you're basically saying is that Tesla's targeting wealthy people. Plus, I'd honestly be shocked if 90%+ of the people buying the Tesla solar roof aren't Tesla shareholders. Why someone would risk their own homes for another one of Musk's experiments is beyond me. The really silly thing is that Tesla's expensive solar roof products are getting larger subsidies simply for the fact that they cost more. Why the subsidy isn't based on output, rather than a set percentage on cost is anyone's guess. Corruption sounds about right though. So to you my friend, I say I'm glad I could help you pay for that fancy new roof.

CLARIFICATION 1/5/22: At 11:02 in the video, there is a comparison made that needs clarification. The video states, “Given the GAF shingle’s dimensions and its 45 watt rating, it would produce, at maximum, 5.96 watts per square foot.” However, because of the way GAF Energy’s shingles overlap on the roof, 56% of each shingle is made up of non-solar material. If you consider the efficiency of only the active solar cells, GAF Energy's shingle produces 14.29 watts per square foot, which the company says would be on par with the efficiency of Tesla’s shingle.

A big black plastic bag to cover a roof night cost less than $20. Just plug in a hose to one end and another hose slightly larger on the other end and it can drive a small gas turbine with maybe five or ten percent electrical efficiency. The birds and squirrels might chew holes in it in one day. But it could probably power and heat a house. If the bag costs $20 and the gas turbine costs $1000, you could buy hundreds of bags for the price of a new roof or solar panels. If the gas turbine can run off of natural gas, it can replace the furnace and the backup generator. It could be used to sell electricity to the power grid. 100 kwh a day is about $5000 a year.

It is starting to take off because it is what happens when large businesses (Tesla) in the US lobby to save the environment with all eletric cars and trucks. It is thes best way to make money. Own solar, eletric cars, power bank, smart phones, energy farms, etc. You basically have a monopoly on where the money goes (Tesla's pocket). Also it is a late 1800s tech. It is a cheaper alternative that poor people can afford. Easier infrastructure to set up. While more developed nations like in Europe made mass infrastructure changes to include hydrogen. That includes underground pipes and refuel stations. Hydrogen can also be used to generate power, etc. They can also go beyond cars and trucks. They can fuel planes, jets, cargo ships, etc. While other nations push for a stronger future, the US is stuck in the late 1800s. Don't forget batteries always lose their charge. So you will have to pay for replacement and service. Something the news will not highlight over and over again. Yeah you can buy solar... sounds good to go eletric. but it pays... in what 15+ years depending on your system. While your normal monthly eletric bill is around $100+ a month. You will have to wait and by then you will have to purchase replacement solar panels and the cycle begins all over again. Save the environment? The world's giant ICE cube 😅 has been melting since the beginning of human life. But yeah. We should change since it is melting faster than usual, but for a better alternative like hydrogen. More applications to go beyond just cars and trucks.

My main concern would be ease of repair / replacement. I suspect it is a lot easier to replace a rack mounted panel that has been damaged by hail than their on-roof shingle. The rack mount just seems simpler. Why over-complicate things for aesthetics. It's just a roof!

In Florida unless the whole shingle is glued down it will blow away in a Hurricane. Roofs with solar on it suffer more catastrophic failure that normal roofs. Just a work to the wise who live in Florida. As a by note there was a home near me who had the "free" solar installed on their roof and within a year they had it removed and had to do a major repair job on thier three year old 50 year roof. Just a word to the wise here in Florida. Solar is not without problems and I have in no wise addressed all problems in any comprehensive manor.

I have 17kW solar panel system and I’ve noticed that on cloudy days my peak energy production surpasses the peak production from a fully sunny day by a large margin. My guess is the panels are much more efficient when they’re cool, followed by sudden exposure to sunlight. I believe solar technology need some sort of cooling and traditional solar panels have a gap between the panels and the roof. Solar shingles lay directly on the roof’s surface, so there’s not a gap (no cooling), therefore they’re less efficient and I’m sure they won’t last as long.
@JBoy340a3 жыл бұрын
lightly Cloudy days can generate electricity from more panels. The soft light illuminates the whole roof and there are no shadows from trees, chimneys, etc. And you are correct about the panels being more efficient in cooler temps.

The issue with this is that the consumer assumes all the risk. I as a homeowner would like to know pricing, what's the warranty, does it require a maintenance contract. Also in Florida how will it effect my Insurance premium as it will be very costly to replace should a hurricane rip off the roof or damage. There are still roofs in Miami with tarps that were damaged in 2018 from hurricane Irma so I could just imagine the delay with this new technology. This is also not taking into consideration the current supply chain shortages that's impacting all industries.

Solar shingles are a luxury product. Larger panels create greater efconcept. Smaller ones require an incredible number of electrical connections. Each connection is another potential point of failure. Good luck on that concept. Billionaires only need apply.
@smiskowiak3 жыл бұрын
At 3 minutes in, I already see one big problem. The connection wires. If you live in an area where you get 30+ inches of snow a year, you need to do something called roof raking. Basically you're removing snow from your roof so the roof doesn't collapse under the weight of the snow. When there's a lot of snow on the roof, you're not going to be able to see the connection wires. So then when you come with the rake, you're going to catch a wire, and pull so hard the wire breaks or the solar roof tile comes up. The company that's developing this is on to something, but they need to take into consideration that more than 50% of Americans live in an area that receives snow.

A few years ago when Musk had the online estimator for a solar roof it said it would cost over $110,000 for the roof. I don't remember if it included the battery. This house is in sunny Florida and has a $100 to $200 monthly electric bill depending on the season. A normal architectural shingle roof estimate was $18k. At the time the solar roof cost was 1/3 of the house value.
@boostav3 жыл бұрын
You need to compare the cost of the roof + PV to the Tesla solar roof, not just the roof alone. Second of all asphalt shingles are the cheapest product on the market, there are far more expensive roofing products. Asphalt shingles also have a shorter life than a Tesla solar roof, so that also has to be factored in. Lastly most Tesla roofs don't cost $110k. It's like saying why is a Porsche is so expensive compared to a Chevy when both take you from A to B.
