Funnily enough this exact same thing happened with inept Martial arts Movie Twin Dragon Encounter. Also made as a self-promotion vehicle for it's Mary Sue stars The McNamara Twins. Almost all fights are slowed down, but as it was done in post the 24fps they're working with gives jittery as hell results to the point that it's hard to know who hit who. To lengthen the film further, the very same fight scenes are played over the end credits but in normal speed, so finally you can see what's going on.

Not meaning to be that obnoxious hipster or anything, but I’m so glad to see someone touting the brilliance of Darkplace. I watched it in 2004 on channel 4 here in the UK, late on Thursdays (I think..?). So, so good, and it’s stood the test of time. It was a cult hit that went mostly unnoticed even here, until around 2007 ish when it was released on dvd. And even then, it’s not got that wide an audience. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out ‘Man to Man with Dean Learner’. Made by same people, with Garth as a cameo in one episode.

(Also - if you haven’t already, make sure you watch the DVD extras to darkplace. You’re right to say that the modern context makes this show brilliant. Always loved Darkplace, it was something special. That said, it's spin off Man-to-Man with Dean Leaner, while weaker had a great final episode. But when re-watching it myself recently I've always thought: Could you bring this show back? Something like the franchise revival trend we see now? I imagine it be weaker but applying that second layer that could be the point. All the top layer characters are older and not really interested but need some money and something to boost their profile now its a cult hit (or in Dean's case just money because of DeanVD sales). You get to the point where Garth is just using it "get back" at all those who "attacked" him when the show was launched in 2004.

I've only seen one episode of the show when I visited my brother in the UK and I really enjoyed it, one of my favourite gags was when Thornton Reed (Dean Learner) answered the phone saying Hi, bye and hang up as soon as he answered.

Now for the love of all that is good and holy, can we get a Region free blu-ray release? I'd even take a Region 1 DVD. This is a show that refuses to let me give it money.

i would take it on vhs and cherish every crinkly inch

There are very few comedy shows as good as Dark Place, but if you want to discover something on the same level. The two that immediately come to mind are Peep Show (the best traditional sitcom ever made imo) and the whole Alan Partridge back catalogue.

Peepshow is easily the best traditional sitcom, tho I'd say the first season and maybe the second hasn't aged well. The final few seasons are some of the best comedy tv going tho. Superhans is my favourite character is pretty much any thing

Of course, you are including The Day Today as part of the Alan Partridge shows, right? Speaking of which, Brass Eye is also a brilliant piece of satire.

@@85percentnation The 9/11 easter egg (you can find it on KZbin) is amazing. "I can see the World Trade Center on TV right now, I could see myself if I wav... ah. Ah. Yes. I didn't actually hear that. Amazing soundproofing in these buildings..."

Another funny little subplot The woman playing Liz in Darkplace dissapeared, notice how she's missing from any interview portions If you pay attention to the talking head sections, you'll figure out what happened...

One of the little touches is using the classic 80's version of the Channel 4 ident at the end of each episode, not what was current in 2004. For a child of the 80's, that really added a touch of authenticity.

Excellent video... With one small correction. The actor whose entire part is ADR'ed? Not quite - that voice was all Matt Berry, the mad genius!

Thank you for introducing me to this. I don't know how I've missed it so long.

love seeing this, I caught the show late on TV about 10 years ago and had no idea what I was watching but fell in love, had a lot of people think I'm crazy when showing them it, the british style humour doesn't always work for everyone but I love it. Great video guys!!
