Intentionally bad acting is Richard Ayoade's biggest selling point. I suggest watching his interviews about the book he wrote. He deconstructs everything he touches. He's probably one of the most hilarious character actors I've ever seen.

From a Brit who watched this show when it came out nearly 20 years ago and periodically refound it via late night repeats and rare dvd's, it is so satisfying that americans have found this. I love when Americans find niche British stuff and completely get it. This show is still pretty cult even in the UK, so I hope it finds a massive US audience.

Not meaning to be that obnoxious hipster or anything, but I’m so glad to see someone touting the brilliance of Darkplace. I watched it in 2004 on channel 4 here in the UK, late on Thursdays (I think..?). So, so good, and it’s stood the test of time. It was a cult hit that went mostly unnoticed even here, until around 2007 ish when it was released on dvd. And even then, it’s not got that wide an audience. If you haven’t already, make sure to check out ‘Man to Man with Dean Learner’. Made by same people, with Garth as a cameo in one episode.
@lectorintellegat

(Also - if you haven’t already, make sure you watch the DVD extras to darkplace. You’re right to say that the modern context makes this show brilliant. Precisely because that’s true, you need to watch the 40+ minutes of modern context interviews, all extra to what you’ve seen in the show. All fantastic.)

Funnily enough this exact same thing happened with inept Martial arts Movie Twin Dragon Encounter. Also made as a self-promotion vehicle for it's Mary Sue stars The McNamara Twins. Almost all fights are slowed down, but as it was done in post the 24fps they're working with gives jittery as hell results to the point that it's hard to know who hit who. To lengthen the film further, the very same fight scenes are played over the end credits but in normal speed, so finally you can see what's going on.

Great reflection on GMDP. I watched it when it aired and while I got the parody thing, wasn't sure about Richard Ayoade's 'deliberately' bad acting for the first episode or two. The show “Decker” is similar to Garth Meranghi if you also watch “On Cinema” to get the production details. I don’t even know where to start explaining the “On Cinema” universe, just check it out. It’s incredible.

Another funny little subplot The woman playing Liz in Darkplace dissapeared, notice how she's missing from any interview portions If you pay attention to the talking head sections, you'll figure out what happened...

I like that you use a meta framing device in your video essay about a show with that meta framing device and bookend your essay with a reference to Community, probably one of the most meta tv series I’ve seen.

This show is beautiful. You say how much you get to know the characters - It’s because it’s like a well written movie (One they sadly never made a sequel to)

American television is like a beggar - it holds out it's hand at the end of the season and hopes for a renewal. When it really goes all out it ends the season on a cliffhanger - a kind of coercive blackmail for both the producer and the audience - if you want to see what happens next, you'd better renew us! Both the English and the Japanese systems have a lot more self-respect and dignity, and a lot more respect for the artistic integrity of what they're making. But, you know, in America capitalism is king, not art.

When you were listing comparisons to shows within shows (thanks for the recommendation on American Vandal btw), I was surprised Trailer Park Boys didn't come up. That show uses the context of itself to achieve some awesome stuff, especially in the first few seasons IMO.

Always loved Darkplace, it was something special. That said, it's spin off Man-to-Man with Dean Leaner, while weaker had a great final episode. But when re-watching it myself recently I've always thought: Could you bring this show back? Something like the franchise revival trend we see now? I imagine it be weaker but applying that second layer that could be the point. All the top layer characters are older and not really interested but need some money and something to boost their profile now its a cult hit (or in Dean's case just money because of DeanVD sales). You get to the point where Garth is just using it "get back" at all those who "attacked" him when the show was launched in 2004.

Yeah, I was thinking the same. A reboot of Darkplace where they're discussing how they'd intentionally kept in lots of the dross and also needlessly "modernised" a bunch of things in really obvious pandering ways that they felt were genius ideas. There's definitely something you could do with it.
