Some people in the video said that you’re not an Ausländer if you’re born in Germany and while that’s a theoretically correct definition, that’s not the reality in Germany. I’m 28 years old and was born in Germany, just as my parents were born in Germany. My grandparents immigrated from norther Italy (mother’s side) and Croatia (father’s side) but even they speak perfect German, just as myself. But I’m still called an Ausländer by the Germans. I especially started to notice it after I finished school (Abitur) and entered the work force, that whenever I introduce myself with my (foreign sounding) last name, all former pleasantries start to cool off and I’m automatically treated differently then before. It’s honestly bizarre and quite hurtful, I’m still the same person you were moments ago happily chatting with. 😔 You can bet 10 sentences later the question “ sooo... where are you from?” will drop. Where am I from? I was born here, never lived anywhere else, know nothing else, just like the German asking me this question. When I answer with “Germany”, they snort and asked again “where are you REALLY from?”. If it’s not an work environment I state the well known hospital I was born in and when asked where my parents are from I inform them of their birth hospitals. 🙄 It’s honestly starting to get on my last nerves having to explain, to basically everyone, how my grandparents moved to a different country almost 60 years ago. I basically don’t know nothing about this person suddenly asking about my family history. To all Germans, I know you’re naturally curious, but how about starting these conversations by telling me some family related and personal facts about you first. girl, I feel you! It’s so sad that people have to label other people like that. It happens to me too in Italy, where I was born and raised. Except I look asian so this question comes almost always even without having to mention my last name. I also have Italian citizenship, but I feel like I will never be fully accepted as Italian because of the way I look

It doesn't matter to them where you were born or where your parents were born. They will only consider you German if you have German ancestry. Their principle of nationality law is based on Jus Sanguinis which means right of blood. It's only in the US and other countries etc that accepts nationality based on where you were born.

@@maryna1374 Sprichst du Englisch und Deutsch? Wenn ja steigen die Chancen, aber bist du "nur" mit einer Sprache in Deutschland unterwegs, wird es schwer. Die Schulen in Europa erziehen die Menschen zur Bilingualität, selbst in Großbritannien. Deshalb fällst du auf wenn du nur eine Sprache sprichst und nicht gut kommunizieren kannst, was du möchtest. Das ist wahrscheinlich das Kernproblem, nicht mal direkt der Begriff "Ausländer" bzw der offene/verdeckte Rassismus und die Diskriminierung auf dem Arbeits-/Wohnungsmarkt.

@@maryna1374 If you're a successful person and did well etc, you'll be considered German. If you're a criminal etc, then they won't acknowledge your ancestry. Like in every other country. Except for China etc, where once a Chinese, always a Chinese, independent of where they are born.

I'm with Janusz. I lived 27 years in the UK, then 30 years in the USA. I regard myself as English - I was raised in that culture and I'll never lose my English accent. In my opinion, you can never lose the culture of the place you were raised, even if you get citizenship elsewhere. So in America, I'll always be an Ausländer - that's how I see myself, and that's how Americans see me as soon as they hear me speak. Having said that, being English and white, I'm lucky in that I suffer from none of the prejudices that might make me feel unwelcome here.

@@lisenpedersen I don't think I can afford to move to the UK now. I'd move there tomorrow if I could. When I moved to the US, I figured Americans wouldn't be stupid enough to stick with their expensive and hopelessly inefficient private health insurance system for more than a few more years. 30 years later, I have come to understand how effective the health insurance industry's propaganda is.

@@denysivanov3364 I agree. But it doesn't take away from the fact that my upbringing has left a deep and indelible mark on me that no amount of time spent in the US can erase. You can't grow up in a country and not be permanently molded by that. America can have its influence on me, but it can never remove the Englishness that's at my core. If I lived another 30 years in, say Spain, I have no doubt that the US influence would diminish to almost nothing and be replaced by a Spanish influence, but the Englishness would still be there.

@@black_back9986 Ich finde seine Antworten nicht diplomatisch, aber ist nicht so einfach erklären. Auch wenn ich so viele Jahre hier lebe wie Janusz und vielleicht sogar die Staatsbürgerschaft habe, fühle ich mich nicht Deutsch, Deutscher Staatsbürger ja aber nicht Deutsch. Der Erklärung ist was Janusz sagte, er hat seine Kindheit in Polen verbracht. Das bedeutet die Kultur, die Mentalität ist nicht die gleiche. Dazu würde ich hinzufügen, dass meine ganze Familie in meinem Herkunftsland ist. Und das ist ein andere Gründ ich kann nicht fühlen mich Deutscher.

I'm Italian and i 'll move to Germany in March. I will be part of an important erasmus research project aimed to find an HIV cure. I'll stay in Nuremberg for 5 months. I really love Germany , I want to learn German , I want to be a part of the German society and live there. For this reason I subscribed to this channel. Well, for sure South Italy has a lot of problems, that in Northern and (kind of) in Central Italy don't exist. But some other little problems, like car traffic, economic crisis (i.e. lower salaries, difficulties to find the job you're looking for...) and some other related matters. But yes, the general lifestyle is better, infrastructures are better, everything looks more in order in comparison to South Italy.

Ein 'Ausländer' muss und sollte sich wegen Fehler in Schrift und Wort nicht entschuldigen. Ein anständiger Mensch übersieht und überhört das tolerant. Was die anderen denken, ist doch völlig egal.

If you would try to stay in Germany in the 90s you would know how accepting they were. Things changed a lot since then ... I wasn't allowed to stay there young, educated, european (if somebody would think that it mattered) speaking english and german (forgotten now) and I was always treated as unwanted. Well, I am in Canada now and I am grateful for here I am not anymore marked as foreign...in Germany you stay a foreigner for many generations.

It always depends on how you identify yourself. Let's say someone is from Italy but was born in Germany and lived there his whole life, I would personally say that he is German with Italian descent but it always depends on how you identify yourself.

Ich kann Janusz voll nachvollziehen, wenn er sagt, dass er Pole ist. Ich glaube, mir ginge es genauso, sollte ich auswandern. Ich glaube, dass das Land, in dem ich den Großteil meiner Persönlichkeit, meiner Werte und prägenden Erfahrungen gemacht habe und wo ich meine erste Sprache gelernt habe, einfach immer mein Herkunftsland bleiben wird. Egal, ob ein anderes Land meine Wunsch-Heimat ist oder nicht. Aber ein sehr cooles Video, was ein schwieriges Thema behandelt. Hat man ja auch an der Reaktion der Leute gemerkt. Keiner will irgendwas Falsches sagen.:D Ich glaube, ich hätte auch gerne eine noch direktere Frage an alle wie "Bist du Deutscher/Deutsche" interessant gefunden. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass viele sich da selbst nicht so sicher sind, als was sie sich sehen/definieren würden - im Gegensatz zu der einen Frau im Video, die ganz klar gesagt hat, dass sie Deutsche und Tunesierin ist.

I think someone is not foreigner to a country/land when that person truly loves that land and the society on that land as their home, respect everything on it, devotes their good to make the land a better place, not someone who lives there but only seeks for material interests and benefits the land can offer. Well, lot of people got emotional and passionate while asking and answering the question including Januz. One of the best videos of all the time. Very engaging video and question was really uncomfortable and tough. I could sense some discomfort in the way lots of people were answering the question. If you are born in some other country and spent most of your life in foreign land and then coming to Germany and getting German passport will technically make you German but deep down you know you belong to both the worlds and you cannot dissociate yourself from your roots and homeland. But it is difficult for someone in other country to understand how some people could be both local as well as strongly connected to their homeland's roots.

Obwohl ich fließend Deutsch spreche, gucke ich mir eure tollen Videos immer an. Ich komme ursprünglich aus Polen und bin im September 2009 nach Berlin gekommen. Seit 2017 habe ich auch den deutschen Pass. Wenn mich jemand im Ausland (also z. B. im Urlaub) fragt, woher ich komme, sage ich: aus Berlin. Ich fühle mich beides, deutsch und polnisch.

I'm Russian and permanently live in Russia except 5 years which I've spent in Saudi Arabia. At some point I realised that I want to learn Italian, but there was no real reason why I had to learn it and so I said to myself that I'm Italian! The only problem is that I'm not able to speak my language and I need to fix it, so I need to learn it. And guess what? This kind of motivation worked for me. Probably it won't suit everybody, you have to be crazy enough :)) Now I want to learn German and I feel that with this great channel I have all the chances! I think if you grow up somewhere else you can't change that. We all receive our respective cultural programmings so to speak from where our formative years were based. Even if I move and live in a new place with a different culture, I will always have or 'feel' the culture I grew up with and all its contextual clues, social rules, language, etc. We can learn new ones and find new homes, but our memories still hold that first culture. That's what makes me feel 'other' to another country's culture.

Ich lebe in Polen und ich bin Polin. Ich finde, der Ausländer ist ein Person, die andere Staatsangehörigkeit als ich hat und die zeitlich in Polen lebt. Ich komme aus Brasilian, und wir sind ein Volk, das sich aus verschiedenen Völkern zusammensetzt, darunter auch Deutsche. Das Wort "Estrangeiro" (Ausländer auf Portugiesisch) hat aus meiner Sicht also keine negative Bedeutung. Das Video war sehr interessant für mich, weil ich nie darüber dieses Thema voher gedacht!

First i have to say: this is a Great video of you:) But i find this question sometimes really hard. I see this in my erasmus semester in izmir/turkey a lot. Everbody is a german( most of them have parents from a different country) but in the moment when it is about history...yes than i am the only one. The nativ german. Everyone "likes" this country but only when the sun is shining, all the bad things and negativ ideas are " nativ-german". I wish me sometimes more than only: german is okay for me. I wish me sometimes more commitment to this country. :)

@@denysivanov3364 If your roots make you unhappy and feel unwelcome its ok to cut them. Family are people you choose not people you are related to because blood says so. Nationality is feeling part of something, if you feel left out it's ok to forgive forget and move on :)

I really respected Janus' answer at the end. I feel like if you were born somewhere and lived your whole life there then that is what you are. But also I'm big on heritage and ancestry. I don't claim that I am that nationality but that I am of that decent/heritage. I have some German ancestors so I say I am part German in that sense but I am not German. I find it all kinda complex. I also feel that if a person becomes a citizen of that country they can call themselves that but its not who they are, if that makes sense?

I look at it a bit like Janusz does. I'm a foreigner living in The Netherlands. Like Janusz, I've lived here for more than 25 years (more than half my life). I speak fluent Dutch and have Dutch citizenship. However, if someone asks me about my background, I say I'm Australian. (Dutch people hardly ever ask, for the record. The question only really comes up in friendly conversation with fellow English speakers.) Like Janusz, I think of myself as a person who lives in NL, who loves NL, who participates in Dutch life, and who has made a commitment to NL, but I don't really, really think of myself as Dutch. For me, not feeling Dutch is probably because I was already an adult when I moved to NL. My accent might also play a role in how people see me, as I do speak Dutch with a slight "English" accent. I'm learning German because my husband's family is German-speaking. I love your videos, Cari and Janusz!

Ich lebe mein ganzes Leben in Deutschland und habe auch die Deutsche Staatsangehörigkeit. Trotzdem werde ich als Italiener gesehen unabhängig davon wie ich mich fühle. Es wird sehr wohl in der Gesellschaft unterschieden wo deine Wurzeln liegen auch wenn das niemand so offen im Video ausspricht.

Ich war mal in Innsbruck und ein Mann hat mich angesprochen und 10 min spaeter fragte er mich, ob ich eine Schweizerin bin. Ich lachte sehr, weil ich in der Tat eine Russin und fuer eine Woche nach Österreich gekommen bin. Das heisst, ich hab mich ziemlich gut maskiert. Das war angenehm 😆

"Ausländer" is a word which lost all its usefulness as a term of description in the last 30 years but became a politically charged term. The definition is in the textbook: someone who doesn't have the citizenship of the country he stays in however that is not the use of the word in everyday talk.

Ist es nicht eh überholt, in einer Welt, in der alles was unser Leben bildet: Waren, Finanzen und die Menschen selbst, globalisiert ist, immer noch die Landkarte in Kästchen zu unterteilen?
