I am from Central Asia and while I was watching this video, I just get shocked. I am 24 years old and I have never been in any foreign country. And usually all of our people are same like me. And even if we want to visit other countries, it is nearly impossible because our economic conditions are below the average. If you collect your annual wage, you can just take a plane ticket for that money. So I want to say that, be happy that you people have such a good opportunities.

It's so easy for Europeans and North Americans to visit and explore the world, humans from the so called third countries have to go through very difficult beaurocratic constraints to explore Europe for example, while seeing Europeans enjoying their time in their lands easily. I hope that one day all humans can roam the earth freely.

Yes, I agree. I'm from a third world country and in fact, my family has not travelled outside of our country. Now that I live in Europe, I can travel often (its cheap to travel within Europe if you are already here) and I visit my family but they cannot afford to visit me.

I'm from Kazakhstan, in the summer of 2019 I visited Europe for the first time. The first country was Hungary, then Germany, Serbia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece and Turkey. It was a cultural shock for me to see the service in restaurants in Berlin. It's just terrible service, I waited 10-15 minutes and no waiter came up to me. Honestly, it's very rude and I'm not used to it with us, the staff do not understand that after such treatment, people will leave negative feedback and complain about the venue.I think restaurant owners don't give a shit about visitor reviews. The high standard of living in Germany, the whole of Berlin in tiles and paving stones, I just enjoy walking around a city like this. No, seriously, people, joy in small things, I like the infrastructure and amenities of the entire city, that's what a city where people live should look like. I did not feel the pressure from outside, everyone is busy, no one just touches you, I do not even know what else to say.

In 2018 I took a trip as an adult chaperone on a high school trip to London, Paris, and Berlin. I had been to France a few times before, and I know French, so I knew what to expect. London was lovely, but I was surprised that I couldn’t always understand what people were saying, even though they were speaking English. Berlin was perhaps the strangest to me... not in a bad way, just different. The Fernsehturm seemed ominous, so “Soviet” (I grew up at the height of the Cold War). In London and Paris, I could understand the street signs and ask for directions if I needed to, but I felt completely helpless in Berlin because the signs had letters I didn’t even recognize (like ß - I thought it was a special kind of “B”). Of course it seemed like everyone there spoke English, but it seemed rude to assume that, so I generally kept quiet and stayed with the group. I decided to remedy my ignorance by learning German, which I’m in the process of doing (not enough to write this in German without Google Translate, which seems disingenuous). I plan to return to Germany within the next few years- I love this beautiful country!

Danke, Alex! That’s very kind of you! I’m afraid I’m not confident enough to be able to attempt to converse with a real German person! I am still very much *ein Anfänger* and my pronunciation is horrible. If you’re familiar at all with Duolingo, I can effectively express the very useful sentence *Die Katze gibt einer Frau den Rock* or *Das Pferd dankt dem Hund.* Everything I know happens in *die Gegenwartsform* -the present tense. I am just now learning the dative case, but I still have to refer to my notes for each exercise. I have been trying to read German children’s books, and even they are a bit too advanced for me at this stage!

@odonkor989 You’re so kind but I’m not sure anything about my life would be interesting to you... if the “989” in your username correlates at all to the year you were born (1998 or even 1989) I have children older than you. 🙂 I’m a married middle- aged woman with 3 (adult) children, who themselves have little interest in what I’m doing! And I have no knowledge of Spanish other than what I leaned in 8th grade : *Hola Maria. El perro está en la casa.* And your English is already so advanced!

odonkor989 I wouldn’t say that... I’m fascinated by German life! I just didn’t want to mislead you. 🙂

@odonkor989 Yes, ok. I can attempt to write in very very basic German (present tense) and you can correct me. Then you can tell me about your life in Germany and I‘ll see if I can understand what you say. Only in writing though... I‘m not ready to let anyone here me actually *speak* yet. 😕 I don‘t want to post my email address here... are you on Reddit or some other forum?

In my opinion, this episode shows that there exists a bias towards privileged people in Easy German's videos. Please, don't get me wrong: I love Easy German and I'm not saying that you are consciously selecting privileged people. I know that you made very interesting episodes about racism, immigration, refugees, etc. and interviewed people that are members of oppressed minorities. I know that asking "Which countries have you been to?" would attract answers from people that are well travelled. But there isn't a single person in this video that hasn't travelled outside Germany. Most (if not all) people interviewed in this episode travelled to a lot of countries, even in continents far away from Europe. I would love to what a person without ample economic resources has to say about this or a person that is simply not interested in travelling abroad even if they are able to. I can't stop feeling that the same happens in those videos whose questions are not directly related to oppressive situations. I know this is complicated but I'm sure you could find a way to increase the diversity in your interviews. Thanks for your hard work! :)

Well. I am from the Czech Republic. And the best culture shock was Austria. Or... Better said ... It wasn't the culture shock. It was its absolute absence. I just feel there as if at home.
