Thanks! Not born until 1950, never knew much about her ... just remember my mother loved her and my dad was very intrigued with Hugh’s aviation. He used to like to go to LAX and watch planes take off and land. Rogers & Hepburn .... such strong women of young but now Hollyweird.

Yes when I was a little girl I first discovered all those great old movies on TV ... I remember the first time I saw Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers dancing and it was a great set design . I asked my mom who they were. ... Same thing with Clark Gable , Humphrey Bogart , James Cagney Spencer Tracy , Marilyn Monroe , James Dean ... I can remember feeling so sad when she told me about James Dean's death and Marilyn Monroe ... Great memories watching all those old movies with my parents , sometimes my older siblings also .

Ginger Rogers and Lew Ayres remained friendly after their separation and divorce. She held off on filing for divorce from Ayes because she was hoping for a reconciliation; they had begun seeing each other again. Howard Hughes instigated divorce proceedings and Rogers felt she had no choice but to go through with it. Ayres was the love of her life and they remained friends until her death.

I met Ginger Rogers in the early 1980's when she was performing in Omaha and I was an switchboard operator at the Red Lion Hotel. Sweeties, she came with the glamour and she smiled and SMILED. Thank you so much for this and your bio on Ginger Rogers. My grandmother was a tap and chorus line dancer in 98 different MGM musical productions (Georgia Snedeker, alive until age 96). She and Ginger were same age and knew each other/became friends because they attended Christian Science church together. My grandma was a trained dancer from early childhood vaudeville and silent films but she completely accepted Ginger for who she was (her non dance background was obvious to all she worked with, but as a co-worker/person, Ginger was always humbled, hardworking and nice!). However Grandma’s opinions of Astaire were always terribly negative, based on what you call here: his strive for “perfection.” But because perfection is required when filming all synchronized/choreographed dance films, it’s really about HOW one acquires such from dancers. Fred’s method were known amongst studio dancers (and wannabe future dancing starlets) as flat out abusive while souring their professional opinions on his dancing “style.” Ginger dealt with his “perfectionist style” ie “lack of professionalism” ie abusiveness longer than any other partner of Astaire’s could, and probably why she could tolerate being “dominated” by Hughes.

I loved watching Astaire and Kelly perform, and marveled at their incredible tablets. But I heard they were both relentless perfectionists. Fred, who looked like pure perfection on camera, lamented later in life that he never performed a perfect routine in any of his movies. Gene was even more ruthless in his pursuit of perfection. He was notoriously competitive at any sport in which he participated. He threw terrible tempers if he ever lost. One can only imagine how grueling it would be to dance with either performer. They both reduced their leading ladies to tears. Fred said that Ginger, however, never cried. But making "Singing In The Rain" was torturous for a young and inexperienced dancer, Debbie Reynolds. He apparently never complimented her on anything she did. She danced so long and so hard, her feet bled. Ginger's did, too, opposite Astaire. But she was a perfectionist, too, so she could keep up with Fred's endless requests for re-takes. It's amazing how effortless and blissful everything appeared on film with those two men. They were both cruel taskmasters between takes and in rehearsals.
@geraldmoran6387
@geraldmoran6387 8 ай бұрын
They weren't performers at the top of movie musicals because they were nice..humble sweeties.. they were tough taskmasters...and probably most of those female dancers/artists knew the drill. I think Fred.. particularly..was probably just as hard on himself. Just look at the wonderful entertainment Fred and Gene created.

Hi Age of Vintage, how are you? Another fascinating story from the Golden Years of Hollywood. Ginger Rogers made a big name for herself dancing in 9 movies partnered with Fred Astaire. They were the quintessential dancing couple, in many musical films. I don't believe Ginger would let Howard Hughes or any other man dominate her life, & especially to be at Hughes beck & call. They did get engaged & he bought her a 5ct Emerald engagement ring. However Hughes was not faithful to Rogers, & certainly flaunted himself around Hollywood with other film stars. Rogers found out about his philandering ways & called off the engagement. She had now become used to his patterns of manipulation, & fittingly walked away from their relationship for the last time. One of the pictures in your presentation was that of a young Doris Day not Ginger Rogers. Just letting you know I'm paying attention.🙂 The story about Ginger Rogers giving Hughes back all the jewelry he gave her as she broke up with him reminded of an actress who did the opposite. Actress Ellen Barkin when her husband, billionaire Ron Perelman, divorced her she took all the jewelry he gave her and took it to the auction house Christie's and sold them, pocketing millions.

Doing a lot of takes of dances was common practice among the elite dancers. Gene Kelly did 40 takes of his classic dance with Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor in "Singing in the Rain." Yes, their feet got beat up and they sometimes even wound up in the hospital. Astaire and Kelly didn't ask their partners to do anything they weren't also willing to do. These practices led to what virtually everyone accepts are the greatest dance films of all time. That's worth a little effort, don't you think? Ginger Rogers was a top actress among many other top actresses. That showed real talent. Fred Astaire the hard worker and taskmaster is acknowledged as the greatest dancer of all time, challenged only by that other taskmaster Kelly. I'd rater be the greatest ever at my craft than one of dozens or hundreds of other top people. Astaire remained at the top of the game into the 1970s and got his only nomination in 1975 for "The Towering Inferno." He grew into being a top actor. Rogers was done at the top by 1950. Rogers was a great talent, but comparing her talent to Astaire does her a big favor, not Astaire.

Actresses in Hollywood often had shorter movie careers than their male counterparts. With the exception of 'On the Beach' and Silk Stockings' in "58 then ... 'Finnians Rainbow'.. 'Towering Inferno' and his supporting role in 'The Notorious Landlady' that was pretty much It for Fred movie-wise during the 60's and early 70's.

Virginia McMath was one of the most iconic Hollywood stars ever! Edit: It is funny, if not hypocritical, that people whom claim this or that religion pick and choose what beliefs to abide by?! Ginger wouldn’t drink, smoke, or even go to a real medical doctor bc of her religion but she was totally fine with getting married *FIVE* times. Bc of those beliefs, she did not go to a doctor when she had cancer and heart issues. Only a Christian Scientist “doctor.” She could have lived longer if she hadn’t been involved in that cult. Same thing happened to Jean Harlow except way earlier. Harlow’s mother was big into the cult and wouldn’t let Jean see a MD until she was literally on her death bed at 26. What’s even worse about that is the fact her disease could have been cured years before when she caught it as a kid but her mother never took her to an actual doctor. Ever wonder why Val Kilmer looks and talks the way he does now? It’s bc he is also a pretty devout Christian Scientist. He had throat cancer but bc of the brainwashing he had by the cult, he never saw an actual oncologist until he almost died. Celebrity friends, Cher for one, forced him to go. It saved his life. Otherwise, if he had followed that cult’s beliefs, he would be a dead man now. Pro tip - if any so called religion of any kind brainwashes you to believe MD’s and modern medicine are anathema to their beliefs, run for the hills. It’s def a cult. Scientology is the same way. Look what happened to John Travolta’s son. Scientologist are strongly against psychiatry of any kind. You could tell that boy had Autism & other issues. Travolta and his wife always denied his health problems while he was alive but after he passed, they through caution to the wind and told everybody his mental issues. Sorry to tell Scientology, but someone with severe mental issues will not get better by talking to someone and taking herbal medication spending thousands for it. It was brave of them to stand up to the church. Sad thing is, I think they did it with Kelly Preston too. That they didn’t let her go to an oncologist. I could be wrong but I’ve seen horror stories of how Scientologists treat cancer patients. They believe the cancer is cause by “thetans” that have invaded and sickened the body. They think the sick people haven’t been following Scientology like they are supposed to. Like with their son, Scientology believes the only cure is through those talking rundowns or whatever that *BS* is called. I don’t know for sure but it did seem like Kelly didn’t get the appropriate treatment. If a religion controls your personal life and liberty to that degree, it’s a cult. Plain and simple. Sad thing is Travolta will never leave bc they have almost 50 years of all his intimate details that he told them in confidence which they recorded.

Ginger Rodgers was a brilliant dancer, more known for her dancing abilities than her acting just like Gene Kelly, and her partner in crime Fred Astaire.She found in him, her perfect partner. According to what Hepburn said: " He gave her class, she gave him sex.", I don't know if she truly loved him or if it was a way to get jobs, at least at the beginning of her career, cause he was clearly the bigger star with influence. It doesn't sound like a authentic, genuine love relationship. Not surprising that hughes dominated her... he tried to dominate anyone ! The classical egomaniac. Rip to both of them. And not hughes !

I think TRUTH is important no matter how devastating it is. In telling the TRUTH, the Golden years of Hollywood were in fact so tarnished by a well kept secret that no one would openly divulge. I grew up watching these movies on television during the 50's and furthermore believing women were supposed to be slim and beautiful and men were handsome and debonair which would most always lead to a happy ending. I had read Hollywood was manufactured; little did I know how much. This manufacturing has continued into the present era since the Golden years of Hollywood, even more than it had occurred then. Executives must have tired of emotional and prima dona actresses for indeed they began to manufacture beautiful actresses who had less emotions and more stamina. I encourage you and everyone to do your own research,. Some of the actresses who we came to love on the screen were actually men. Most had an operation paid for by the studios and took hormones thereafter. With Ginger Rogers, I believe her unbalanced mother switched her gender when she was a baby. which may be why her estranged father kidnapped her. Please note that Howard Hughes really picked them for his lifestyle preference or was he both ways?. Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis were also born as men. Think about it. I suffered such a great disappointment realizing the TRUTH, yet they were so talented and believable. I am not so interested in watching their movies any more, but if I do I watch them for entertainment and not hero worship. I definitely do not watch any of these newer movies today, for most of the women actresses are men and they don't have talent compared to the ones of the Golden days of Hollywood.

A sick genius and a racist in top of that ! He was a womanizer ( with a preference for brunettes ) who treated women like kleenex ! Not surprising that he was friendly with Errol Flynn. Birds of a feather flock together !Jean Peters, his ex wife, once sais that he was a psychopath and was not often with her cause he isolated himself in his private studio. Good that he found strong ladies like Ava Gardner who put him in his place ! Leonardo Dicaprio did a much better job than Warren Betty portraying Hughes. Speaking of Betty, it would be cool if you make a video about one of this last legend of the Golden Age of Hollywood ! 😉😘

IMHO, I think Gene Kelly was a much better dancer than Astaire. Astaire was popular because he had a bleach blond partner to dance with. That fed into peoples fantasies of dancing with either a graceful male partner or a beautiful female partner.

In his long film career...the lithe... limber and inventive Fred Astaire made at least twice as many musical films..('Silk Stockings' his last in '58 (BTW not counting the disappointing 'Finnians Rainbow' in '68) as Gene Kelly....whose very muscular body pretty much gave way dance-wise at 45 or 46. I enjoyed 'Le Girls' his last major musical film... his dance routines however were few and short. I think most dance professionals admire them both but consider Fred the greatest dancer/musical performer of the 20th century. Out of 100 '20th Century' male film performers American Film Institute ranked Fred number "5" and Gene "17".

I used to adore this woman when I first started watching her movies with Astaire back in the late seventies; but now when I watch those movies, they only annoy me for the fakeness, and the characters that I usually find funny are the bit players who used to annoy me(Eric Blore was funny, Everett Edward Horton was not). When I watch these movies now, she comes across as smug and snobbish, while Astaire is just flat out a pain in the a** because he seems so childish and irresponsible for someone his age!

I also found her flippant character abrasive.
