I splashed out in the Black edition this year. It's an amazing brush. Even for priming I don't use cheap Chinese brushes. In the end they are just a nightmare waiting to happen. My main detail brush now is the H&S Squidmar Black edition and my workhorse brush for priming or terrain is the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS. Both solid and reliable.

it's funny how the parallels run, but I worked in the gun industry here in Canada for 10 years, and one thing I learned is always strip & clean a new cheap "gun" before you use it. The number of times I've found metal filings, caked on grease, etc from factories was always high but cleaning it before use always reduces the headaches.

Oh hey, Squidmar team, I have a video idea for you: How to improve the performance of a cheap (or even expensive) airbrush. I personally use teflon tape or bee's wax on threaded seals, but my personal "life hack" is automotive polish for the needles. You have to be extra cautious, as you can damage the tip if you're too aggressive, but I use this product called "Eagle One Nevr-Dull". It is a chemical and physical abrasive pad meant for polishing car parts, but It works FANTASTICALLY on rough airbrush needles. I have also used it to polish the inside of roughly machined paint cups.

I also realized pretty early on that the "portable" airbrushes get so warm at a certain point of use your paint just dries in the airbrush. They are great for the first 3 minutes, so very quick paintjobs, main layers, then it needs like an hour cooldown. I'm on the fence about them. They're handy for that "I only can paint one mini today and I just lay down the baselayer" but if you really want to grind them out, they s*ck.

I can not stress how great my Harbor Freight airbrush has been. Same needle/nozzle size my expensive Iwata, and yet I barely have to service it. Only the cleaning was not really easy, I noticed the difference with the H&S which is much easier to clean. But the most important reason for changing was the possibility of getting spare parts should something need replacing. --------- you never actually use personal protection, in the videos you rarely see an extraction system or even masks. it scares me a little how you can do it so carelessly because the aerosols are quite dangerous in the long run.
