This is so calming Tom, you've built up this routine of reviewing the microphones and I know how it's gonna go. The concept is presentation, demo, pros-cons, puns, back to it, then you always have that special angle to things, and of course - the comparizons in the end. That's so valuable! Great review!

Thanks Mac! I've tried to keep a similar structure for mic reviews and I'm glad you noticed!

I love that the USB output sounds so similar to the XLR, at least in your setup. I feel like that would make it very versatile, plug it in wherever you need it and it's the same sound you're used to so you might be able to use all the same settings for effects/processing and whatnot. Maybe this mic's sound isn't the most detailed and clear, but what is there is a pleasant tone and nothing stands out as harsh or offensive. I could listen to it for a while with zero fatigue, only maybe a slight bit of... I don't want to say boredom, but drifting attention?... after a long while with how soft and nice it is, lol (streamers wanna keep people engaged! Maybe if viewers get too relaxed they'll fall asleep?), but that's much better than a harsh sound in my book. I liked the Lewitt 240 sound a little better, but I'd still have to think hard choosing between them because the features and use-case aren't 100% the same. (If money were no object I might just pick them both up!) Great review, I think the comparison mic choices were really helpful to give some context for what you're getting, both for the price and just in general.

Super thorough and fair review. Bravo, Tom! I am somewhat of a microphone collector and have owned around 20 mics costing between $25 (hello, Behringer XM8500) and $1200 (Neumann TLM103). Current collection sits around 10 mics that I rotate according to mood and sometimes actual needs, hehe. As far as this mic goes, I was looking for an inexpensive mic that I could hook up quickly via USB with good audio quality, and I really love it for what it offers and at its price point. I like the way it sounds with my voice, and think it sounds great via USB, making it a really quick mic to setup for online meetings, calls, and even impromptu recordings. I often sing its praises and recommend it to people looking for a mic that sounds excellent and offers good features, provided that you keep it on a stand or boom arm and don't fuss with it while speaking. The mute button on top has come especially handy for online meetings, as it allows me to mute myself without having to move a mouse and mute via software.

@milesian12 ай бұрын
@@benchmarkerlovesgaming140 Not really. Just be mindful of how it will sit in front of your mouth. It's prone to handling noise, so you might want to get a boom arm rather than a desktop stand. But as far as audio quality and ease of use goes, there's no reason to hesitate. Like I said, I own many mics and I still use the AM8 all the time.

Hey Tom, you are 100% responsible for my crippling addiction to Rode products, however, I have just come back from a client job today, and I thought I'd change up some of my gear. I usually run Procasters into my Rodecaster Pro II. Today, I used a set of FDUCE SL40s. They are super cheap dynamics with a yoke. They have definitely gone with a Shure look, but they are definitely budget. I'm so impressed with the sound though. The SL40 produces slightly muddy lows, but it definitely gives a nice thick chesty tone when coupled with some nice settings on the Rodecaster. Build quality is pretty good; solid metal, but the windscreen is naff. I actually bought some nice quality 3rd party SM7B big covers, and WOW, no plossives even when right on top of the mic. All in all, for just under £50 in the UK (including new windscreen), the SL40 sounds great and genuinely not far off the Rode Procaster. The con is likely to be lifespan, but only time will tell. I probably won't use them regularly for client work, but it was a great experiment, especially when they cost a third of a Rode mic. Thanks for your great reviews and inspiring content. Cheers, Matt
@tombuck10 ай бұрын

One of my fav reviews for this mic! To be honest I'm not an "audio guy" and I was not sure it would be worth the money and boy I was wrong. What I like about your review is that while you know your stuff and you have much better mics available, you still find value in the AM8. Most reviewers (and people) would try to convince themselves (and us) that because one is more expensive, IT HAS to be better. You did a good job and I appreciate the honesty here.

I then painted the yoke white, and got a white XLR cable. It added 6dB of gain and 18dB coolness (according to me, at least). I have to say that it's the only one I've found that I don't need to post process for my wife's podcasts. I do wish the body was maybe 30% smaller overall, and had internal shock absorption. This is of course very good stuff, as I expect from you. I have two(2) open questions: 1) You mention that condensors are much less tolerant of noisy and untreated environments (but you also hint that the Lewitt doesn't mind that much?). My question would be: for someone shooting video (so no padded wardrobe magic here!), what's the trade-off between a respectable dynamic mic in a random space and a bare-minimum (I mean like a tolerable 100$ mic, not that 20$ thing you brought on to shame) condensor in a bare-minimumly audio-treated space? I see condensors recommended fairly casually (not by you!) to people who may not be working in settings where they are a net benefit. (Or should we just save up for a moderately good shotgun style mic out of shot.) 2) Special bonus question! Suppose we take our audio production outside, for whatever reason. Is there a handheld mic (into say a Zoom recorder) that isn't an Obviously Stupid choice? Do we absolutely have to lavelier up our game?

It's an easy choice tbh. If you can't put a mic designed to be used quite close to the sound source, then it's not the best fit in your case. You can't get the best out of the AM8 if it's too far off. So in this comparison, the shotgun mic should suit you better.

So I just ordered this microphone from the TikTok shop. I am slightly confused with everything you mentioned in this video involving a Roadcaster, Mixer, and XLR. If you’d be willing to explain what these things are and if they are important and/or needed with the microphone or not, I would greatly appreciate it 🙏
@tombuck6 күн бұрын
Sure! There are two types of mics: USB & XLR USB mics connect to a computer/phone/etc with a USB cable and that's all there is to it. XLR mics use XLR cables and need to go through a mixer or interface (Rodecaster or something similar). This lets you mix multiple mics together and stuff like that. The AM8 is neat because it has BOTH options, so you can keep it simple and run it via USB or use it with an XLR mixer. Hope that helps and hope you enjoy your mic!

@tombuck10 ай бұрын
At this point, I would recommend upgrading to the Rode or similar mic. You'll likely notice a HUGE improvement in everything. Definitely check which pickup pattern you're using on the Yeti too- if it's accidentally turned to the omnidirectional mode, it'll pick up so much unwanted sound.

It could definitely be a discernable update in terms of noise rejection. If the keyboard sound is the main thing that you're concerned about when coming to consider a different mic, the AM8 could fit the job. But if you're talking about the noise floor, the Rode one at around $200, which should be the Rode Podmic USB, has a lower overall noise level.

@FIFINE9 ай бұрын
The requests may mainly come from the interest in its competitive price, not many can manage to keep the price of XLR/USB dynamic mic this low (with discount included, it could go below $50, and can work right out box since it got the stand lol). Therefore it's also our best-selling dynamic mic. And hope it doesn't let you down. (For some PC or Laptops with an all-in-one combo audio jack) I'm sure that it makes audio connectivity WAYY more convenient than having to buy a separate audio adapters like the USB audio ones. And btw, I really like a white variant one. It fits my #1 boss style. I would have slapped a #1 sticker on it! Like a No.1 Boss! =D 5:04 I thought it was muted out for a second and the audio comes back. Im getting a lot of electrical humming from the mic. did you set a noise gate and remove it in post?
@tombuck27 күн бұрын
If it's via USB that sounds strange. If it's via XLR, it could be a cable that's prone to interference. I didn't use any processing here and didn't have any issues with humming. But one of the downsides to ultra cheap gear is that quality control isn't always perfect, so it could also be a defect.

Does the AM8 have any capsule stabilization? Or can you get a shock mount for it?

Tom love your vids!!! Whatbwould you recommend for a halfway decent road kit for audio for streaming? Is there a USB C mic without the need for an interface thats passible? Budget is up to $200 if necessary.
@tombuck10 ай бұрын
Tons of great usb mic out there! If you’re on the road, you probably want one with less handling noise than this. The Sennheiser Profile is a champ and the Rode NT-USB+ has a lot of software processing available if that’s your thing.

What headphones are you using in this video? And how did you get those blue earpads?
@tombuck10 ай бұрын
They're the Rode NTH-100s, but unfortunately the blue pads aren't available for sale.

Is there a microphone that beautify your voice ? Like a slight voice changer in it that make your voice deeper ?
@tombuck4 ай бұрын
Lots of software/processing can do this, both in editing and real time. Audacity and OBS are great free applications to start with.

@@tombuck i want to have something in realtime to use when I have my professional teams meeting since it’s on a corporate laptop I can’t install any software do you know any mic that can do it ?
@FIFINEАй бұрын
No sound effect of the mic itself, but if your voice is a bit high-pitched, because of the dynamic mics' characteristic, it can smooth your voice a little bit.
@FIFINEАй бұрын
@@REDIUS999 For team meetings, it's better to get everything else as simple as possible to focus on the meeting itself, so it's ideal to get mics that sound good with raw audio and won't go wrong quite easily. This AM8 or the K669B USB-only mic that Tom has already reviewed may fit your needs. Or look for some good-sounding USB mics out there.

I always love fifine mics. Could you do a video like this one the k688?
@FIFINE6 ай бұрын
Thinking of choosing between these two? AM8 is a bit heavier on the lows, if your voice is pretty deep already or you just want a bit more details of your voice from a dynamic, the K688 could be a better fit. If you just want the bass to make your voice fuller and more supported or limited with budget, then the AM8 could do a pretty good job for gaming, streaming or even podcasting, in those scenarios where you always want a bit more low to sound good and attractive to the audience.
@Alex38369Ай бұрын
@@FIFINE I ended up going with the K688. I have a deeper voice, am not a fan of RGB, and love the sm7b look. It's a fantastic mic

So if Im looking for a budget mic like this one, what would you suggest?
@tombuck7 ай бұрын
This is a great one if it's in your budget! Really the only downside is the handling noise, but I appreciate that Fifine doesn't really try to hide that fact. They chose to focus on sound quality instead. So if you're in a setting where you don't need to constantly touch/move the mic, it should work great. I believe they do have some updated USB options as well that might have slightly better build quality, but I haven't used them myself.
