I’ve been watching these videos for the last week or so and as a American I’ve really been enjoying and found it very interesting seeing what food is like for y’all, so I’ve decided to subscribe! Thanks for the great content and entertainment! The only thing I hate is that I can’t try the food myself. We do have a store in my area called The British Emporium where they carry a lot of Imported British food although most of it is shelf stable foods in cans or jars and stuff like candy or chips plus they do have a very small freezer with frozen food mainly consisting of frozen meat pies, kippers, and one or two other items. I love going there but it’s quite expensive to import them all the way over here. When I was a kid in the early 90’s we used to go there with my grandpa who was born and lived in a small village in Wales so he loved going there and getting stuff that he hadn’t had since he was a young man! So British food and culture has a special place in my heart because of him and the fact that it’s 60% of my genetic heritage! 🇺🇸🇬🇧

I'm fortunate enough to have a traditional butcher 5 minutes walk from my house - the bacon he does is way superior to the local supermarkets (Tesco, Aldi, Lidl, Waitrose Sainsbury). It doesn't shrink much when you cook it, none of that fluid bubbling out, and you can buy just what you need, rather than a whole packet.

Same here for my butcher and not just bacon, things like burgers or steaks just don't shrink. The thing is about cheap/supermarket meat is it's bulked up with water and add salt as a preservative. I think for chicken if it looks shiny it means it has a lot of water in it for example to bulk it up.

Only after you mentioned buying from a traditional butcher, aside from one that specialises in made-on-the-premises sausages, I think all the butchers shops in the town where I live, have gone the way of the Dodo.

@@revengenerd1 Always check the meat content on any supermarket burgers/sausages, won't touch any that have less then 95%, and unfortunately local butchers don't always give the same precise values, therefore you don't have clue what exactly goes into them.

Hi Gareth, just watched your bacon review video, and I was in Aldi yesterday, they are selling a 1kg pack of smoked, or unsmoked back bacon for £3.79, you get about 16 rashers which works out at just over 60grams each. The Asda essentials are about 37g, and the ordinary Asda are about 30g . I know people will say they won't use all that at once, we repack it into 4 rasher packs, which is what we use at a time, and freeze it. We like it a lot and it's good and thick. Farmfoods also do 600g packs of bacon, 3 for £6, but it is quite thin, but great for cooking in things like egg & bacon flans etc. Keep up the good work mate.

I was in Lidl on Tuesday and checked what I still needed from Tesco 8 miles away. Bacon. That was the only thing. So I decided to buy Lidl bacon instead and save myself 8 miles' worth of petrol. And I bought the Lidl cheap one for £1.25, just like the Just Essentials from ASDA. Even at Lidl I could have paid more to get the fancier packaging, but nope. I was determined to give the cheaper one a go. And it's delicious bacon! So it looks like I'll be buying my bacon from Lidl in future. The fancy packaging of the more expensive packs does make vacuum sealing easier. Because I am on my own I have to rewrap bacon, ham, cheese etc pretty well after opening, because the pack is open for longer. So for the past five years I've used a vacuum sealer. The life of the food can be extended by a week, no problem when it's vacuum packed after opening.

Also, the pigs are treated better here, than they are in Europe too, helps the flavour. If l can't afford the bacon, l wait until there's special offers, buy two packs and freeze one. After years of buying bacon from Supermarkets, I changed a couple of years back to my local village butcher. The taste is a world away from the supermarkets. I had forgotten what proper bacon tasted like. Most of the supermarket stuff, is about as thin as they can slice it and shrivels to nothing when cooked how I like it and leaves a thick white deposit (nitrites .. bad for the vascular system) at the bottom of the pan after all the water that is pressured in the bacon at processing, boils off. You start with 3 slices that fill the plan until eventually you get 6 slices in the plan all shrivelled up that only take up half the pan. The butchers bacon may be more expensive off the shelf, but by the time you cook the supermarket stuff, there is very little of it left. and it is so salty.. Pound for pound in what you end up with in your sandwich, the butchers bacon is better value.. but its not easy to convince shoppers of that, as they base their purchase on what they see in the packet and the weight ( most of which is water in the supermarket stuff which boils away during cooking).. Keep up the excellent reviews Gareth.. You are getting a name for yourself and its all good..😄

I use to work in a Bacon Factory. Slaughter to Packaging. Then bacon was cured, first injected with brine then submerged for 48 hours in large tanks as sides of pigs.. The side were then stored for a further 48 hours to dry in a 1 degree cellar, before being cut into shoulder middle and gammon etc. Most if not all the bacon you buy today is cured in the sealed bag, which is why its full of the brine. That is what bubbles out as you cook it.

Agree 100%. There's too much water added to bacon these days, so that your bacon steam-cooks instead of heat-sears. Finding a good butcher nowadays is like finding gold. I remember when I was young that if you found a good butcher, even if you moved away from the area you still travelled back to that butcher for your meat. Fishmongers shops and butchers shops have been destroyed by the supermarkets and our lazy shopping habits. It's convenient, but we are paying the price in quality.

Supermarket bacon looks fine until you fry it when it shrivels down to nothing in a cloud of steam. Its pumpoed so full of water. To make a decent sarnie you start out cooking 3 rashers but end up using the whole packet as it shrinks down then hey presto, you have used the whole packet to get a half decent sandwich. Nothing like butchers bacon that usually holds its own and makes gorgeous sarnies. In fact my mouth is watering right now ( rather than the bacon) and I'm off to the kitchen.. 🤑🤑

How ya doing G man👍I always get Tesco middle cut rashers value range as I cut off the streaky and chop it up to run through scrambled egg the back from the middle cut I use for sarnies or breakfasts. They are rind on but I cut that away and more often than not the streaky part is so lean I've used it it sarnies and with pasta or pizzas too. 6 thick cut middle rashers value is £2.15 which is pretty good for what can be done with it and I hate that tissue stuff it's naff😂great vid take care buddy ✌️🍻

I don't mind the cheaper one but sometimes the slices aren't uniform. Good for butties though. Oh and as you seem to do a lot of asda stuff if you haven't sign up for the Asda rewards. You can build up cash to use off your shopping instead of having to collect points. There's lots of products you get 10% off and also sometimes you can get £1 back on certain products. I just bought a tub of celebrations for £4 which is cheap as is but you got £1 back to spend on your next shop. Worth doing it. Maybe even worth a video if you can video whilst browsing in store.

Been thinking about this, I’m glad they replaced the smart price branding because whenever I looked at it it never really looked appealing with the dull colour and little information about the food itself on the front. This just essentials range seems much better in terms of packaging, as a graphic designer packaging is everything in my eyes.

I buy "cooking" bacon which most of the big supermarket sells, and costs between 80p and £2 for 500g its all the odd and ends of bacon that they cant cut into nice slices! If you are not using it for breakfasts or sardies its a great saving whatever. And sometimes its not funny shapes or lumps but proper slices. So everytime i go to the super market i have a look at what the cooking bacon looks like today and if its slices buy it, take it home and freeze it.

35p; that's a lot, seven shillings! They both looked good but I prefer the thicker cut. I haven't lived at home in the UK for twenty odd years now, nut I used to buy my bacon from the high street butchers. Middle cut, so you get the best of both worlds, streaky and back, nice and thick and untrimmed, with the rind still on. That is proper bacon.
@BaldFoodieGuy2 жыл бұрын
Thanks pal

Finding a cut of bacon you like takes some doing as your tastes are always changing. So keep on looking and trying new things ... I find back bacon is very popular but it hasn't got the most flavour. Not evryone like smoked so they always stock both .myself I'm happy with smoked . And streaky too as you will find the flavour is in the fat . So no fat no flavour.. a good one to get butTakes some finding is smoked middle you get the back and streaky together that's my favourite.. but i'm not fond of smoked if we are boiling up a pan of broth for that i like a shank. But sometimes a pack of bacon pieces also with the shank makes a nice pan of broth .

We tend to use 'cured' bacon and though that can be a little more expensive, the overall taste and quality for ie a breakfast platter is more appreciated. 👍I do agree with you re a cheaper cut for ie bacon sarnies et as often who doesn't top it up with sauce?? HP of course... Tomato?? Phillistine!

Gareth my lovely , you know me and my tips for saving money 💸 well as here's a tip you might not know. Lidl & Tesco & other places get Cooking Bacon in which is as you said in asda's cheap one here thrown in . Well the Cooking Bacon 🥓 & this is the way the pks are called is the remnants of what is left like Mishapes on the slicing machine and it's cheaper & bigger pks in Weight ( usually 500 grms). Home Bargains if u have one sell it too in their food section which is fantastic

@@BaldFoodieGuy thanks Gareth my lovely cheers for reply . I saw an American lady in America cooking Bacon in a frying pan and she covered the bacon with water slightly ( yes I know it sounds weird ) but it works as she showed the crispy ( yes crispy ) bacon result to the camera on a fork .My son watched it while shaking his head as I handed him my phone ( speaking of which yesterday I got a new contract phone from Virgin it's a Sony Xperia 1 3 and that's what I'm texting this text to you so bear with me if I make mistakes ).

First appearances the cheaper one has more marbling, but in my experience, more marbling is usually more flavour
