In English, we don't say "consider about" - "consider" is always a transitive verb and takes a direct object. For example, "I will consider this solution" or "You should consider what to say at the meeting". "Discuss about" is uncommon, usually "discuss" also takes a direct object.

I'm never going to judge somebody's English if it's their second language. I remember how much trouble German gave me as a native English speaker, and German is very similar to English. I didn't know John Cena actually spoke Chinese. I thought he was just parroting what someone else was saying, or just trying to read it phonetically.

I teach English in Taiwan... I judge a lot because they have major problems learning new ideas about learning English. I've done it for a long time and still have no idea what they think "learning English" means. People get mad if you ask them to read books, or have a conversation, or write, or uh... Anything... They want to sit there passively and be lectured to, I guess, but all the bosses will push you to make the classes like 50% output, when realistically many students are willing to do about..... 0%, to maybe 2-5% output .. of course with a few people who want 100% output... Their grammar sucks even after attending my class for years... Why...? Because they just do whatever they want and don't listen to a damn thing you teach. They have some idea in their head AND WONT SHARE IT WITH ME about what "learning English" means. Locals here will tell me "oh just stop trying to help them and give them what they want". Okay... But what do they want? Not listening, not speaking not reading and not writing.... Uh... Uh.... Do you see a problem with that?????? I just focus on people that will deal with me and ignore the rest but many schools essentially require 100% of everyone to love you and if one small thing isn't to their satisfaction you're out on the street. By the way nobody will tell you what that thing was or what they actually want. In other words, the English learning system here is utter trash.

oh yeah, asian languages is it's own league. I am Asian American, and english is my second language but because I was raised in the US and live with only english speaking people my whole life I am most proficient at english. I failed Japanese so horribly that it's not even a joke the symbols, word structures, etc is completely different from romance/germanic languages. Funnily enough alot of asian say the opposite about romance/germanic languages because it's so different from Asian languages.

I'm Singaporean Chinese. Honestly Cena's Mandarin is impressive. Yes the tones were all over the place, but I understood everything he said. Oddly this also tells me that tonality is actually not as important as one might think. This should be good news for English native speakers learning Mandarin.

Outsiders usually see patterns in a language that native speakers cannot see because "it's always been like that". Outsiders that really dig into a language and have their heart set on not only learning but living it will play with the language a lot because it's fun. I have a friend who does that with russian and his russian friends say the same things as you do in this video. They don't understand the logic.

I've been learning Japanese for the past 9 months and it is definitely a two-steps-forward, one-step-back process, mostly because there is SO much to remember! My best advice at my low level is to be patient and just keep reviewing and reviewing, and also, get a teacher on iTalki or somewhere similar, because it helps tremendously to have a native speaker help you out.

Fluency is heavily influenced by consuming content, you just need to engage in more listening of the language, you brain will naturally work on giving you a natural sense of how to say things. Speaking practice somewhat helps as well but nothing beats listening to audio when you want to speak more naturally;

Actually, regarding the "___ about" verb phrases, even in English you do not use the word "about" in some of the cases you mentioned. Specifically you don't say "discuss about" or "consider about", you just say "discuss" or "consider"

I have too but I think generally discuss takes a direct object. Like we’re going to discuss dogs. Versus we’re going to discuss about dogs. I’m not entirely sure “discuss about” is grammatically incorrect, and any native speaker would know what you mean. However it’s definitely not necessary to have about be attached to it as it is implied that the discussion will be about the then said. So saying discuss about is kind of like saying discuss about about to native speakers. I have never heard consider about used by anyone though native or not.

Before John Cena spoke Chinese I was a fan of him as an international superstar in WWE. About less than 3 years ago I wasn't aware of it when one I was on KZbin where John Cena he was in China for tourism and eating food. It shocked me! However I love to learn how to speak like him but before Cena's Chinese speaking trending came out my uncle living next door to me spoke Chinese Mandarin when he was 10 or 15 years old. We're Mexicans and he spoke the language for 5 years working with the Chinese in the delivery business in upstate New York. To this day he speaks fluently and I love it! I didn't need a tutor so his knowledge I learned a few from my uncle. It's hard to keep up but practice is key for anything. Thanks for this video.

Great video! This is very helpful as usual 老师！Particularly in the 冰淇淋 video, it sounds like he's trying to speak with a Japanese anime accent while using Chinese words, not sure if that makes sense. Like it reminds me when some of my college classmates would try to speak Japanese in an anime style in our class, when Japanese people don't talk like that. The difference here being those students were being foolish thinking that's how Japan is, while for John Cena it's accidental, I highly doubt that's his intention.

I saw in this video that you are allowing corrections to be made for your english so i thing id like to to point out is the way you say “what i want to do” at 7:02 is correct but for a more natural accent i would replace the ‘t’s with ‘d’s like “whad i wanna do” that way it would sound a little more natural. ❤

I've got a question about tones in different kinds of sentences. In English a tone can change a sentence from a statement, to a question, to a command, to a sarcastic remark. But i find it tricky to do that in Mandarin, especially when it is a command that ends with a 2nd tone, of a question that ends with a 1st or 4th tone. Perhaps if i could get an answer specifically about tones of characters interplaying with the tone(?) of the whole sentence, that would be nice.

Generally Chinese speakers do not impart many 'sentence tone changes' in speaking. For example, the characteristic raising of pitch at the end of question statements is completely omitted in Chinese--you have to decipher with the A not A structure or the 吗 particle whether it is a question or not. Hope this helped a little

Yes normally there would be 吗 at the end for a question but if there isn’t or you just want to sound excited, you just raise the tone of the entire word. Think of it like parallels, you’re not changing the tone to one of the other four tones, you’re just saying the same tone in a higher voice. Hope that helps!

As a native speaker let me try to explain how things kind of work in my head for these sorts of things. Please note that what I'm about to say is purely from my own experience, and shouldn't be taken as absolute fact, but hopefully can be helpful. First thing I want to touch on is that because the particle system exists in Chinese and not so much in English, Chinese kind of has a "tone marker" for a sentence that removes some of the need for meaning-changing tone. For the sake of this comment, I'll only use the example of asking a question. In English, if you wanted to ask a statement as a question, you might go "up" in tone towards the end. Think the sentence "You went there." vs. "You went there?". In Chinese, because we have the 吗 particle at the end of a sentence that indicates a question, this change in tone isn't required to differentiate the two sometimes, and leads to less use of tone in changing the meaning. (Think 你去了那里 vs 你去了那里吗) The problem comes when Chinese does the same thing as English where they convert a statement into a question without adding a question particle. I would also assume this is what you are talking about specifically. The answer to this question is basically what I would refer to as a "macrotone" (please note this is not official terminology, just something that I named in my head based on how it kind of works). Essentially, the tonal system in Chinese (and I presume many other tonal languages) has a lot of leeway in terms of the general tone of a sentence compared to the tone of an individual character. Note that this macrotone is what you're talking about that exists in English, where the tone difference of a sentence changes the meaning. Essentially, certain parts of a sentence might be generally higher or lower while maintaining the same relative tone within individual characters. This is kind of complicated, so let me give an example: 我们去(wo3 men qu4), which means We'll go, or We go. If we speak this sentence like a textbook might ask us to, it has the definition as mentioned earlier. "We will go". Let's say we're in a situation where you ask a friend who is going, and they say we will go, and you want to question that, you might reply with 我们去? (We're going?), exactly like you might might do it in English, though now we have to worry about the tone of the whole sentence. You would still raise the ending of the sentence like you do in English, but the tones of the individual characters have to be taken into account. In this case, the 去 is higher, but still has a falling tone. As long as things are relatively the same within the character, it's recognizable as fourth tone, despite the fact that you have shifted the entire character "higher". Both the start and end of the "fall" in 去 are higher. Please note that the above example is not applicable to everything or every sentence. In the same way that it would take a long time to really "understand" how to formulate differences in sentence tone in English, the same goes for Chinese. If we were to go with a longer sentence, you would need to put emphasis/raise/lower certain characters in a sentence to give the same effect, and this is probably best learned by speaking to native speakers and picking up on their sentence cadence and intonation when they talk. How much difference in tone from "standard" you can have with every sound and character varies, and how little or much you need to enunciate the character tones in Chinese is something that you won't be able to learn through anything but speaking and listening. It's just a skill that's particularly hard in Chinese because non-native speakers already have trouble with tones, let alone trying to slightly modify tones while keeping it understandable.

It's an interesting video, speaking volume on how idiomatic grammar, from our native language, influence the way we form sentences in the second language. To be able to replace them by their foreign equivalent is one of the last stages before mastery. As a french guy, I still sometimes make up weird expressions puzzling my English speaking listeners.

I think one problem lots of chinese learners have is the tones, like āáăà bcs they straight away start learning the words and phrases which is a big mistake. Im half chinese and when I atarted learning chinese as a toddler i remember studying and practicing a lot on just the 4 tones because without them you will not be able to differentiate much between words.

Shuo, I've watched a few of your videos and I like your style. I've been studying Mandarin for a few months now and although I know I'm getting better, I have no one to practice with. I've been concerned about getting the tones right, but I've heard you and a few others say it's not as critical as we think. That is actually quite comforting for me because I am learning in order to be able to speak to my daughter in law and twin granddaughters in their native language. When I listen to John Cena here, I hear his American accent right away. I speak German, and I used to cringe when I heard the "stereotypical American accent" in German - it made me think, "would you like fries with that?" ;-) But I like how you point out the good things you hear from him, and your comments are constructive, so yes, it encourages me too. Apart from the mistake with 一样you mentioned, he also said和冰淇淋，速度与激情9我最喜欢， ，which is using most with than. I like fast and furious 9 most than ice cream. I think he should have used 更:more. As far as Pronunciation is concerned, he said 但是danshi: but like电视dianshi: TV and 音乐yinyue: music like因为yinwei: because. It's like hearing: TV I most like fast and furious 9, and: now it's because time.

had to comment here just because of biànchéng - I'm german and we use "bekommen" as "to get something". Basically every german that learned english fell for that at least once. Instead of "I get a sandwich" or something like that, we say "I become a sandwich". It's so funny that learning other languages have basically the same false friends due to the way we speak casually. In fact, discuss and consider are words that English speakers would not use about with either! Steven Oinker has a chapter about transitive/intransitive verbs in his book The Stuff of Thought, and I think the reason “talk” gets an about is probably because the mental image of talk in an English speaker’s mind is directional, like words leave my mouth and go in the direction of you. Whereas discuss and consider are words that don’t have that directionality, I can’t discuss without you being present and also being part of the discussion. (Just a guess)

I find Mandarin grammar be easily comparable to English in most cases. My problem is mastering the tones and, of course, the Hanzi.

John Cena is somewhere between a beginner and an intermediate learner who's reasonably functional in the language but hasn't quite mastered the grammar and definitely needs to improve his vocab. He's knowingly making the very common mistake of literally translating what he's trying to say from English into Chinese word for word, without adjusting word order or accounting for appropriate word choice, which makes what he's saying understandable but very strange. But his pronunciation is not so bad.

am i the only one whos' hearing only "SHI, ZHI, DHE, KGHE" when people speak in mandarin? idk why, but mandarin has always fascinated me, because it is one of the hardest languages to learn because of the amount of different word structure to describe the same thing. really sophisticated language. but you know, mandarin is one of the most important languages to learn in the world today, i think maybe even more important than english to some extent. it is really helpful in china if you can speak mandarin instead of english, that way you automatically get better and lower prices for almost everything in electronics markets. i've had a couple of business travels to china, so my mandarin is about decent for a western, but in china my mandarin fluency level is considered probably to be similar to that of an infant lol it still helps immensely though, its better to know some mandarin instead of not knowing any mandarin at all...
