I've been taking Mandarin lessons in school for over a year! Ngl it is not easy, but worths it. My Chinese is not well because I don't have the opportunity to focus on studying as much as I'd like to (other uni classes ugh) and Chinese wants dedication and consistency. Sometimes it gets frustrating but when I understand sth in chinese I get super proud and that feeling is everything to me! Since all adults of 'marriable' age were born within this timeframe most of them are either lacking siblings or are part of a family with illegal 'black' children (that often were denied basic rights and a passport unless the parents paid a hefty fine). Because especially the rural families preferred sons for physical labor (hence aborted or, lacking prenatal diagnostics, abandoned girls), there's a huge surplus of men doomed to being single forever (unless gay, which is a whole other 'issue' in China) or engaging with a foreign wife. The pressure to financially or at least optically excel is therefore massive for men. This has a potential for major population decline, mixing with foreign ethnicities and ultimately social unrest. I think people thought he didn't understand the question because of the slightly unusual response of "very interesting". So they laughed as to say "haha ok he doesn't REALLY know mandarin". But then when Mark correctly answered the question, giving a long and conceptually coherent response, people where very impressed. Besides, it's not like tonality is completely absent in English either. the way you end a sentence--whether with a downward inflection in tone or and upward inflection, could determine whether you're making a statement or a question, and sometimes if you go high enough, you could express sarcasm. contrary to consensus, English isn't as tonally-void as people would like to believe

@@uditkarode Chinese is so much harder because it is different. Learning Spanish when you know Portuguese is a lot easier because they are similar. But we only realise how similar French, Portuguese and English are when you start to learn a language which is not. So learning English when you know another western European language is easy compared to Chinese because the grammar structures are similar. But for a Chinese English is as different from Chinese as Chinese is from English for an Englishmen.
