Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg speaks fluent Mandarin at a question and answer session in Beijing. He lists three reasons why he picked up the language, one of it being the challenge itself.

I've been taking Mandarin lessons in school for over a year! Ngl it is not easy, but worths it. My Chinese is not well because I don't have the opportunity to focus on studying as much as I'd like to (other uni classes ugh) and Chinese wants dedication and consistency. Sometimes it gets frustrating but when I understand sth in chinese I get super proud and that feeling is everything to me! No the crowd was surprised and impressed. They were trying to clap every time he said anything. His choice of vocabulary was a bit odd but I think it’s obvious that’s very difficult for non natives. Also I think he says Chinese a lot more casually than native Chinese people do which is making everyone laugh. Chinese celebrity talks are often quite formal (compared to English) with very calculated jokes, with everyone trying to maintain their public image. Since he’s not being formal people think he is trying to joke from his mannerisms.

It's just the Americans who are supposed to speak foreign languages perfectly, correct?

K Lu Very true. I accredit Mark Zuckerberg for studying Mandarin, but his accent could be better. Additionally, if a Chinese spoke English like he does Mandarin, he or she probably would be heavily scrutinized and certainly would not have a video titled, "Chinese person speaks fluent English". It's great when people try to learn our languages actually! Especially when they say it's because they want to understand our culture better :D we often don't see genuine appreciation from the west, so when people put in the effort to learn a language completely different from their mother tongue because they think our traditions are beautiful, it's really a huge compliment to us.

@hemangi bawa west ? Are you a moron. Do not try to be ignorant and make such a sweeping statement about a large part of the world. Just because Americans normally speak one language, doesn’t mean the countries deemed “western” speak one language. We have many countries and cultures and most of us Europeans are bilingual, trilingual or speak more than 4 languages. So relax with sweeping statements, as it makes you seem foolish.

Fluent implies you can hold conversation and use the language as a practical tool for inquiring communicating etc. it’s not the same as being an expert or native level speaker
@GrammeStudio4 жыл бұрын
@New_Account not in Mandarin. the exact pitch is important. you can say "chong" and "chong" with different pitch and get different look from people. Besides, it's not like tonality is completely absent in English either. the way you end a sentence--whether with a downward inflection in tone or and upward inflection, could determine whether you're making a statement or a question, and sometimes if you go high enough, you could express sarcasm. contrary to consensus, English isn't as tonally-void as people would like to believe
@JourdainWong4 жыл бұрын
@New_Account These are the sorts of questions and answers you'd find in a beginner Chinese textbook. He has no control over the tones of the language, which are critical to Chinese speaking. His pronunciation is very poor. He doesn't yet understand the timing or expression required to make a sentence sound natural, and has to think before speaking basic words. He is by no means fluent. This is exactly what a beginner sounds like. He's not even close to being a low-level intermediate speaker. At best, he's on his way to HSK2, nearly 3,000 words short of what you'd need for mid-level fluency.
