I love your videos of the Faroe Islands. I'm a Norwegian, and used to live in the Faroe Islands for 27 years. I was a part of the public transport Bygdaleiðir for a while, and later on driving tourist buses, and being educated as a certified guide for the Faroe Islands. In 2006, I believe, when Scotland played a game against the Faroe Islands, I was driving "The West of Scotland Tartan Army", a fun experience. I even got an official Scotland cap that I use up til today, although it's a bit faded in colour. Your videos are different and honest compared to many others out there. I'm looking forward to your Klaksvík trip next week. I'm also looking forward to my own trip to the Faroe Islands in two weeks time, staying there for three full weeks, and I might even get involved in tourism while being there. I will also check out your other videos, especially of Scotland including the islands up north. I have traveled countless times in Scotland, both as a holiday destination, but also as a bus driver. InShetland I drove bus on the left side for the first time, and later on driving from Scrabster to Edinburgh with 7th grade school children. Once again, thanks for these videos and for sharing them with us.

I'm in England, 65 and when doing geography at school struggled to remember the islands to the North of Scotland. So I made the mnemonic 'FISO' to recall the three island groups (in order N to S - towards Scottish mainland). Easy Peasy, it stands for "Faroe Islands, Shetlands & Orkneys".

The only 'downside' for going round the "Jellyfish Roundabout" is that driving through the 'Eysturoyartunnil' the toll cost (for visitors/car rentals), without an annual pass... is 175 Dkk (approx. 24 Euros) each way.🤔 Bearing in mind that is just one tunnel, it get very expensive, very quickly, driving around the Faroes. My family traveled to the Faroes on the old Smyril Lines ferry in 1990. The islands were expensive even then. English wasn't widely spoken, either, so I bought a Faroese-English phrasebook that obviously hadn't been updated in quite a while. It included phrases like "Please bring coals to my room" and (whatever this means) "The fishermen go down to the sea in skips."

Steve, that was more than a "mildly acceptable" video - it was fantastic! The Faroe Islands are fascinating with truly incredible scenery. I was also blown away by the luxury public transport and wonder how they manage to afford such a great public transport system and roads and tunnel infrastructure with such a small population? Also, do you know why they have grassed roofs on the buildings?
@steve-marsh Жыл бұрын
I wonder exactly the same thing, they are not even part of the EU, so that's another funding option closed to them! I was imagining Alicja telling me to go out and cut the grass :D I guess it's good for insulation? I've seen photos of sheep on the roof before, but didn't see it on my trip! Thanks so much for the kind words by the way!

@@steve-marsh Today it only for the tradition, but for most of the Faroes history, there has only been stones, driftwood (Notice there are no wild trees in the Faroe islands), and grass to build with. Only the ultra rich could afford importing wood. Side note which i find interesting, In the olden times, there have been many buildings that have been "torn" carefully down, and rebuilt in an other village because wood was so scarce. Even one or two churches.

How? The same way Greenland does: Money from Copenhagen.
@troelspeterroland6998 Жыл бұрын
One factor is that Denmark subsidizes them with 75 million pounds a year. Another factor is that Faroese people are generally very entrepreneurial and innovative when it comes to making the most of the conditions given.
@MrDermases Жыл бұрын
@erik_griswold The 75m pounds is 3.25% of the Faroes gtp vs 460m pounds that Greenland gets, which is around 20% of Greenlands gtp. Denmark is not paying for road infrastructure, at least a small % of the 3.25% goes to it, as there are ares that are fully Danish controlled, such as the police, judicial system, etc. These the bloktilskud (grant) pays fully.

@@steve-marsh thank you very much! It'll be an interesting move no doubt, even if it's "only" from Sweden. My wife is Faroese. If you happen to miss the ferry on your next visit (there will be more, i can tell) I'll invite you for a hot meal and a cup of whatever beverage you prefer in Sandavágur as a token of gratitude for showing off our country.

Wow. Best compliment I can give is that I really want to visit. It looks a lot like Scotland and the west and south of Ireland. Then you realise, it's all the same really. Same rock, same soil, same landscape, just drifting apart a few centimetres per century. Utterly beautiful.

Wow Steve that was fantastic. Thought your video on Romania was the best but this was even better. Think Faroe Tourist Board should employ you as their tourism ambassador in Scotland.

Wow, what a beautiful place to visit. You are very fortunate to enjoy such a magical place. It is stunning. Would love to explore there. You certainly were on the good side of the weather gods for your trip. I didn't know that much about the Faroe Islands before I saw your video and this is what I love about all the great information you provide as well as the practical side of travel. Love learning about new places. Shame about your hotel but looks like you enjoyed the rest of your trip. A big thanks for your dedication!

Steve m8, it's got it all hasn't it? I'll be using this vlog to show the wife why we will be holidaying here next year and not in Germany. She likes the sea and I like the mountains, think we are sorted here. I can see the weather is definitely a thing here though. It could make or break it but you with your deal with the devil you are getting the weather we all want. Really excellent m8, looking forward to next week.

Thanks a lot mate! Aye, the weather is the stickler here - I've watched a fair few videos from here and not many feature blue skies and calm winds! Oh next week is my favourite, I much admit!

Definitely go to the Faroes, but if the combination of ocean and mountains is the criterion then most of the coast of Norway will also fit the bill.

I'll be visiting the Faroe Islands next month. Flight via Paris. I was struggeling if I should rent a car, which is quite expensive at the airport, or go by bus. Thanks to your video I know now: I'll go by bus and ferry and only for the last day I will rent a car because I'd like to see the roundabout under the see once. And because of your video I finally discovered where the Bus from the airport terminates: Quite near to the Hotel I've booked. So your video was much more informative than several "You need to see THIS while you are visiting Faroe..." as you did show exactly what I would have wanted to do and see. So thank you! I really appreciate your tours!

OK, today I've been by bus 300 from Tórshavn to Sørvágur and then with the same ferry Boat to Mykines. Well... The waves made it impossible to stay on the deck. I had to sit down below and there was an up and down you can't imagine. No chance to take any photo at all... Arriving at Mykines I did help to take a lot of cargo from the boat. Cans of soda and beer and other stuff. On the tour back it happened: I had to vomit. The first time in my life while on a boat, but really, you can't imagine those waves fo the north atlantic... What you didn't mention: There is a little shop/restaurant at the petrol station near the ferry. So it's quite convenient to sit there and wait. Today we had 3-5°C and on the way back by bus there's been snow on the wildshield. btw. the busdriver told me the street next to the little football field at the beach has been build by british troops in WW II. OK, been to Nólsoy too and tomorrow Klaksvik/Kalsoy.

What a stunning location Steve and what a pleasure seeing such tidy well kept areas, no litter or graffiti all over the place or void shops etc. The boat journey looked incredible, pretty special! Thanks again fella, really enjoyed that as always. Cheers!
