How Good is the Genius Wand + Divine Glaive Combo?

It's important to consider 3 things when deciding your build based on the facts. First is that genius wand provides a debuff, so your teamates also benefit from it in teamfights. Magic power and penetration items only benefit you. Second is that even though genius wand scales quite well with hero level, it's still an early game item, whereas the video test uses a level 15 hero with 5/6 items. If you're comparing 2 items in the late game, it might be possible that 1 item is slightly worse than the other in the late game, but much stronger in the early game, so it would be worth trading off the slight late game advantage for strong early game advantage. Third, it's important to note that genius wand + divine glaive isn't exactly a synergistic "combo" like genius wand and glowing wand and more so a build progression based on different game stages. In fact, like you showed, genius wand actually pulls back the potential of the divine glaive by reducing the enemy's magic def. What I also mean by that the "combo" is like Hunter Strike or Blade of the Heptaseas and Malefic Roar. Those items are not considered a combo. It's more so that assassins will build Hunter Strike and/or Blade of the Heptaseas in the early game and then Malefic Roar in the late game because the former provides strong early game flat pen (esp with fury hammer and assassin emblem with rupture), whereas Malefic Roar provides strong late game pen. For Divine Glaive, it's actually mid and late game penetration because they didn't nerf it like Malefic roar, lol.

Yes, Genius is much stronger early. I actually covered this in another video, but did not cover it here since the point of is to test both together, which I doubt anyone will be buying both early to mid. But yes, you can go for Genius early then sell it off later for stronger late game items 😁

The thing is that it stacks one which another, if you have Chang'e, Gusion and Guinevere for example, all 3 of them build Genius and hit all 3 the tank and have the passive at max, it would have -63 defense

Yes finally the ONE video that i requested to discuss in detail on magic pen topic. You vid always make me change the setting !! Love and hate at the same :) There are surprises in some of the result but i think in general i stick to the rule for squisy use genius + glowing. For tanky genius + divine glaive. Maybe few hero exception after your video. Nowaday i main julian more because using above concept, i can chop squishy full bar in 2 sec like a tafu. Tanky in about 5 sec, which is really crazy. Anyway, as usual yet another high grade video . Keep up the good work!!

I'd still rather build Genius Wand in my mage builds, the bonus dmg from other items isn't that detrimental imo but the bonus move-speed the item provides paired with Ice Queen Wand and the bonus 4% from emblems make such a huge difference for Immobile Mages like Gord, Luo Yi etc..

Genius is unique in the fact that it actually DOES STACK between allies, onto enemy heroes. Having multiple Genius Wands on your team can lower enemies Magic Defense a lot. You could theoretically run ~3 of them on your team, while having 3 high-tick magic damage heroes to utilize the defense reduction to the max. In that case, having both pen items would be the best option, in attempts to have the enemy get to negative magic armor. Probably through passives like Harley, Silvanna, Hilda, Carmilla ect;

😇 Yeah, it really depends, so always do testing if you wanna make sure. Not too sure about Joy - I'd try going Genius Glowing Glaive, especially versus Tanky lineups. Maybe swap Genius for Holy if there's not much Magic Defense built. But, I really can't be sure since I haven't tested.

Concentrated Energy is actually a pretty good item right now since you can boost it to give a total of 100 MP at full stacks, and gives +%Magic DMG too. But you'll have to work for the stacks similar to War Axe, so it's not that super on bursty heroes - way better with multi-hit DPS kinda mages that stay in the fight longer.

The thing about me and magic based heroes are they have the reputation of being squishy that's why I always favor magic items that also adds HP for bulk (Cons E., Clock of D and Blood W) but I wonder how much it affects the damage output as well. Great display of item duo damage comparisons along with the defenses and HP below. I may have to add some stuff tho: - Valir can't benefit a lot from Holy Crystal because his MP scaling is crummy per skill hit. Crude too is Concentrated Energy without maxing the passive. - Mages like Pharsa and Eudora take a while to maximize the Genius Wand passive. Pharsa can pre-hit via S2, passive, and/or S1 before ult, but Eudora comprmises her damage output because of S2 debuff duration and surprise factor if she hits S1 first before S2-ult which gives reaction time. She can use extra hit effects as Glowing Wand, Lightning Truncheon, and Impure Rage to stack the debuff in one skill.

After testing i am saying that the damage count when EVERY dagger hits (middle game where u only have boots and 2 items) Divine glaive x genius wand vs genius wand x glowing wand are on par with eachother with this said id prefer glaive bc with glowing wand u have to be precise to get the best reward for it while it being on par with divine glaive as u need to hit enemy more than 6 times to make use of the passive to its full effects

Genius wand and Divine Glaive isn't ever in conflict with one another. They have updated the damage penetration formula for a good while now. It's available to check in game. Go to heroes tab>Lesley>Check her passive description>then tap Note. The formula is there. Percentage PEN is calculated first then Flat PEN is computed at the end.

You are right... except that I wasn't talking about Flat PEN for Genius Wand. They key here and I have to really highlight this because I get told this same thing alot - I was specifically talking about the Magic Defense Reduction effect from Genius Wand: Unique Attribute: +10 Magic PEN Unique Passive - Magic: Dealing damage to enemy heroes will reduce their Magic Defense by 2~9 for 2s (the Defense reduction scales with level). Stacks up to 3 times. In the calculation of the Damage Multiplier, Defense Reduction effects are prioritized before both %PEN and Flat PEN. So Defense Reduction is applied first, before any PEN is calculated. Flat PEN of course benefits, since it's a fixed value. But %PEN loses value because the lower the DEF value, the lower PEN it has. Note that Genius Wand isn't the only thing in the game that has Defense Reduction. Heroes like Silvana, Harley and Eudora also have Defense Reduction. How do I know this? Well, I've tested this before and calculated it to exact values. 😇

Glaive will always be weakened by Genius' Passive, but it depends on the situation whether that is detrimental or not

Three things: 1. I always use Julian with Genius Wand + Divine Glaive. 2. I don't build penetration on my Valir since his passive deal damage according their Max HP + Glowing Wand's passive. 3. I'm curious. Did you translate some of the equipment names and hero names in the Chinese subtitles of your video yourself? If you need the Chinese name of each equipment and hero, I can help you. I am a Malaysian Chinese. Sometimes in order to facilitate communication with Chinese players and English players, I learned both.

you have some misconception, having percent based damage doesn't cut through tank as you might think. For example, Karrie with Demon Hunter Sword would still benefit from malefic roar because DHS is physical damage so it still needs malefic roar on some cases when there's many heavy tanks. As to glowing wand, although you might think that percent based damage is enough to cut through the HP well no you still need glaive to cut through the magic defense.

After having some consideration, I still think Gen Glaive is the perfect middle ground for most multi-hit magic dmg dealers. Cuz you have genius wand thats very strong in the early game against squishies, then you have divine glaive thats strong against tankies, when you combine both which have very slightly contradicting passives, can still find a good balance of dmg against each type of enemies respectively. And if all the enemies including squishies EVER starts buying magic res items, then u can sell the genius for smth better for maximum dmg output. What surprised me is the dmg of Glow Glaive xD because glowing wand is similar to genius wand in terms of trigger conditions and dmg increase to enemies, glowing doesnt have the -MR reduction allowing divine glaive to have its full potential. I might consider changing a few builds to Glowing + Divine xD

Yeah, the combo is a fine middle ground when you're still weighing your options, and sometimes even the best option. Glowing Wand actually has some crazy damage output, especially on the right heroes!

On Valir, Concentrated Energy grants sustainability, so I want that. My take away is Genius Wand is very situational to favor heroes with low magic power scaling, so next best thing is magic pen as source of damage.

IQW is a given, not to be replaced. I use the jungle movement emblem. I feel like losing some damage from genius wand is worth it for a bit more hp and spell vamp. Valir isn't a burst mage after all.

I think we should take note that genius wand is better equipped on the first 3 item. Pick glaive on 4th instead since enemy start adding defense item on that slot.

For the test on Chang'e and Silvana, I don't think swapping the pen items with glowing wand is a good test for them since glowing wand is really good on them. When creating builds for multiple mini damage heroes, glowing wand is almost a must buy. I think it would be better to test them with holy crystal to see if more magic power would benefit them more. Swapping with concentrated energy is also not a good test since the goal of buying it is for sustainability, not damage.

This is a bad build for most magic. Decent early game but will fall mid and late game. Fleeting time and feather of heaven are on only practical on certain mages. When building, try to focus on cooldown, penetration, and magic power. If the mage does need cooldown, go for penetration and damage. If the mage doesn’t scale well with magic power, go for cooldown and penetration.

Removing Glowing Wand from those builds would be a biased showcase IMO since those mages actually use it as part of their builds. Subbing it out for anything else skews the results since they're unlikely to skip Glowing Wand for anything else.
