How good is the Nikon 40mm F2.0 Z mount lens? With samples.

A great review, congrats. What about the microcontrast? In some reviews, they mentioned that the rendering is amazing and there is some punchy 3D look. It is not as clinical as most high-element lenses. Really happy to hear your opinion on this.

Thank you for your comments. I think the micro contrast as well as overall contrast is excellent. I'm especially pleased with the way it renders faces. It reminds me of some of my old Ai and AIS lenses. I haven't gotten around to comparing it to my 24-70 2.8 at 40mm , but hope to do that soon.

Hi Jules, I like your reviews and comments. Thanks. I do have this lens and I like it very much. I couldn't add anything; your feeling is the same as mine. I have a Z7 and because it has a high resolution, I bought some AP-S Nikon Z lenses and I still have 20 Mpixels which is enough for me (I am familiar with MFT system, which has about such a resolution). I bought the 18-140mm Z as well as the 12-28mm and it became a very light system for traveling providing great results. All the best.

I have a ZFC and thinking between this lens and 50 F1.8S. Thank you for the review. I will probably go for this one and upgrade later when I do buy a FF high resolution camera

The 40 is perfect for street. Its compact and therefore less 'intimidating'. Wwith a Z6 or Z7 it looks almost as a compactcamera. And off course yo can keep the camera low and shoot with the screen up 😊

Thank-you very much for this information. I am still considering the Z35 1.8 as I find my Z24-120 f4 lacking in brightness and narrow depth of field. As many say the Z24-120 is a good travel lens, but for events I am turning to my older F 24-70 with the adaptor. What size prints do you do? If you print 4X6, do you make any changes in camera, or do you just format in Lightroom?

I have a dye sub printer that only prints 4x6. I use a lab for larger prints. I make changes In Lightroom and Photoshop. I agree about events. I use the 24-70 2.8 Z mount.

@@julesvuottosphotofocus4696 Nikon has a sale right now, and I went ahead and bought the Z 24-70 2.8 (good timing). I shot a banquet with 700 people last night with it. Very pleased with this lens. Unfortunately, my Z 24-120 and F 24-70 will sit on my shelf for now.

Disagree with you regarding the performance of 24-120mm. I use it for weddings, events and concert photography on the Z8 and the Z6ii. It is a stellar performer. I have this 40mm and the 28mm. I'm going to dump both of them for the 35mm f1.8 S. Hopefully we'll get a 28mm S from Nikon.

My main lens will be the Z24-70 f2.8S. It was very sharp, even to the corners. The Z24-120 will be used if I need a longer reach, but I do have the F mount 70-200 for longer. Maybe I will pair the Z24-120 with a Z6 iii when that comes out. A fast 28mm S would be nice.

@@jamesspicewilliams8835 I support you on the 24-120, but caution you on that 35 f/1.8? Aperture blades are known to be asymmetrical. Look at how nice the apertures are on this lens, and the 28 f/2.8. I would not buy the 35. Wish you well on your decision. As always, YMMV. Happy Shooting

The 50 1.8G is a very good lens, but for a Z mount camera it requires the FTZ adapter making the combination much larger. Thanks for watching my video.

I have this lens and have no compliant on its optical performance. The plastic mount is a bit of let down. Even Canon RF50mm has a metal mount. Come on Nikon

Honnestly I don t think that with the mass production it will increase a lot the price… particularly on a 4.5k$ like yours or on a 2.5k$ like the new Zf which makes me dream :).

Personally I prefer a metal mount, with a gasket, but in this regard, plastic is better, as there is less ‘wicking’ of moisture, as would happen with metal to metal. One of the reasons you wont find a gasket on a plastic mount lens. Nikon employs the use of high quality plastic. Metal mounts can get ‘brassy’ over Time, with a lot of mounting/ dismounting, and that can lead to very tiny fragments of metal getting into the body cavity. Not so with plastic. But again, I’d prefer a metal mount with gasket. Be careful dismissing something because of the use of plastic. I’ve had metal bodied cameras that have gotten dented from a very short fall. Of course, YMMV. These lenses are made to a price point, so One has to take what they can get. Peace
