What many non-basketball people don’t understand about Zach edey is we really don’t know how big of a defensive factor he can be because Purdue will not let him get in foul trouble and challenge the rim. Put him on an NBA team and tell him zach we need 20 minutes. Don’t worry about foul trouble block every shot you can And it may be a whole different kettle of fish
@cloudmoore28348 ай бұрын
Well his biggest drawback as a prospect is easily his defense because while maybe he is reserving himself on that end it is undeniable that he is a defensive liability. Zach struggles deeply in p&r against D1 guards. He is slow footed, slow to react, slow off the ground, not mobile in general laterally, even blocking shots his timing isn’t amazing and vertically he doesn’t jump very high. In the NBA where NBA level guards exist Zach will be put in the pick and roll every time down the court and it is either an easy blow by or a middy or a floater. Imagine Brook Lopez a very solid shot blocker and paint defender, but in the pick and roll he is torched. Where Zach can hopefully get that back is on offense. Although number 1 he has to work on setting better screens with that big of a frame you need to set bigger screens, number 2 his footwork needs to improve as he is a post player and that reliance on his left shoulder turn and hook, dominates now in college but bigger stronger more talented NBA bigs will take it away and force him to do something else. I doubt he will be a good 3 point shooter however I have strong faith he could develop a mid range as his ft% is solid and that’s usually a good indicator. So defense he will never be amazing, and on offense he has to work on better screens, footwork, and at the very least a mid range jump shot.

Personally, if any NBA team ignores his trajectory of improvement, I think they'll regret not grabbing him in the first round. He came in as the 440th ranked prospect and 3 years later was the Natl player of the year in everyone's assessment. He'll generate fan interest and that will bring in money to his team. And he'll develop his game to match what's needed in the NBA. The guy is determined, skillful, and he's got the track record. I think he'll wind up being an All Star at some point in his career. JMO.

Mid first round pick. Somebody has to guard the Embiid's and Davis's of the league. How much he plays depends on how much the team drafting him is willing to bring him along. How so? He has no jumper, is too slow. He eats the paint, but can be mitigated because he's not versatile. Not nearly as skilled as Yao Ming or Tim Duncan. Do explain yourself.
@fxbillie7 ай бұрын
@@markusgreenidge8330He has no jumper or outside shots? Have you watched the pre-draft combine? 60% on outside shot and 56% on 3s. In game situation it may not be so high but still respectable, and this is just the beginning of his career.

@limweixuan97828 ай бұрын
so after all that where is the evidence of him actually having skill and not being good just because of his physical advantages. he is only amazing in college due to college ball favoring old school bigs that are dominant in the paint. the only reason i can see an nba team taking him is with a late second round pick to be a lob threat/rim protecting backup big and that's about it

Yep, too slow to guard wings on the perimeter, will be a traffic cone in the drop defending the pick and roll. Picture him trying to defend Aaron Gordon after being forced to switch onto him ..not going to work. Bench player getting ten minutes a game is his ceiling.

If he were to make it to NBA, imo his best option is to learning defense. With better defense he could really open up more path for his future. His offensive game maybe one dimensional but if it were to paired with good, solid defense then he could really do damage in 2nd unit.
@musikausdemosten7 ай бұрын
Edey would be a good fit in Philly future wise. He has less pressure to be the starting Center and can Joels back up or get into the G-League first. 2-3 years with Embiid he has time to learn from him as well and be that guy to fighting with Maxey against Holmgren, Sengun and Wemby....

@breadformyfamily41756 ай бұрын
Depends on the team and their timeline. I think Edey can come in and be an incredible player, but he has a 3-5 year window to win a ring before age and size become problems. Like Yao Ming, the man’s knees and back were shot by the time he retired. He worked hard to be as good as he was with that body. If I’m a team without a good 5 or need a backup 5 and an insurance policy against other big men (think Hack a Shaq for those Wemby/Chet/Joker players) then I’m taking Edey asap. Or trading whatever I need to. He has the chance to be something special but he needs real playing time and shot attempts, which is a lot to ask for if you’re not Joker/Wemby type outside players too.
@Griemmy6 ай бұрын
He plays like Yao. He has the same speed. I dont think he will find it difficult to adjust really. He may not get a lot of FGA, but no one can stop him down low, except maybe Wemby.
@bigmac737 ай бұрын
Yes, my Hawks should draft him they need a big and defensive force inside!
@astromigui7 ай бұрын
I think this guy would be a lot better in the Euroleague than in the NBA. Think of guys like Tavares, without 3 seconds defensive violations this guy would be a wall in the paint, and slower pace plays in his advantage. He should try it out in the NBA as much as he can, but I think he has a good future ahead in Europe when time will come.
@catchnkill6 ай бұрын
Your reasoning is good basketball-wise. However NBA can pay him more salary. It is hard cash. I think he will better play in NBA despite NBA game is too fast pace for him.

I remember even a few years ago, they said big men were obsolete.....then, Jokic won and Embiid dominated. Even Giannis won without a three point shot and counted as 'big'. We have to view Eddy is having a Giannis-like impact on offense and potentially being 75-85% of Gobert on defense where he can defend the inside with his size and length but need help on drop coverages. I guarantee you that if you took away Jokic's three point shot and reduced his assist rate in half, he'll still be a force to reckon with. Don't overthink it I think he gets drafted Top 10

So many people commenting here not on the state of the game as it stands. I am not a huge Curry fan but can say that his style of play was so shell shocking teams simply could find no answer, it created an absolute match up nightmare faciliating the rest of the players around Steph. What you have to realize with Zach is he is a monster offensive weapon that can be totally unstoppable meaning a mathup nightmare which in turn will trump what some will be concerned about with him on the defensive side. There will have to be a player on the court to deal with Edey who will not be a capable offensive player.
@abouttime50006 ай бұрын
The league has put the brakes on going small. The skilled big man is the new focus. They can shoot, guard and pass. Having a 7' plus shoot over a 6'4" perimeter guard is a no-brainer. The new big man stand at the top of the key with full visibility and can make accurate passes to cutting wings all day long.

considering his ability to put the ball in 2-3 meters from the basket when he has to, there is no reason he can't develop a reasonable range over the years, and perhaps even a 3-point range (he most definitely has a soft hand and the strength for that). so, in my mind, whoever takes him and is willing to give him the necessary 2-3 years to develop further, will get an elite center.

So, far he looks like his ceiling is Yao Ming. I would also think he could hope to have career like a Big Z, Eaton, Smits. If I had to bet I woud say Big Z. He should just continue to work on hook shots with both hands and his FT shooting and at least a little bank shot like Duncan had and be decent from FT distance and in. I hear people saying he is going to get cooked on D because of switches and things like that. I don't think people understand scheme and NBS can play zone now and a matchup/man sone.

Why doesn't the NBA change just it's ruling on the Defensive Three-Second Rule? Eliminating this rule would allow teams to play a traditional zone defense a la in NCAA and International Play. NBA players can therefore be in the key for more than three seconds and defenders can be positioned in specific areas for longer periods. Teams can now execute more strategies and adapt defensive schemes to the players and talent they have. Players like Zach Edey would flourish. Problem solved. This would help offenses become more dynamic too, especially at the end of games. I am starting to get sick of watching the same two players on offense run the pick in roll while everybody else watches and stands around. Can't imagine what the NFL would look like if they banned zone defenses there.

Call me crazy but I think Edey is going to be really freaking good. He really does remind me of Yao Ming. He would’ve been a no brainer number 1 pick in this draft 2 15 years ago and he probably should’ve been in consideration this year. I really think he has a shit to be rookie of the year

Here is my case to draft him between 10-20...everyone is so concerned with what he might not, be that they aren't focused on what he could be....and why that could be a problem if they let him slip beyond 20 (heaven help you if he drops between 25-30) If he slips between 20-30 (more so the 25-30) that means he is going to either the celtics, knicks, bucks, okc, nuggets or twolves. Ok, now imagine if the scouts have it wrong. Imagine he is either at worst a fringe All Star and at best the best in his Class....you just sent that guy to one of the teams that are already stacked with talent on a dirty cheap contract and you just handed them someone who doesn't need time to grow into his NBA body cause he is 22. You don't draft him cause you want him, you draft him because taking him at 12-20 and he ends up a bust is better risk then leaving him and it blows up in your face.
