This is how Alperin Sengun torched him last season. Wemby put on 20 lbs in the offseason but still has some issues with really strong centers in the post. The problem is reaching over the back of someone is basically asking for a foul, because your head is directly in the way! Big girthy men can destroy a stick from this position with skill and timing.

I was irate when GS started playing the way they did and won the championship; I understood why but I hated it. Based on their success every team in the league decided to play that way and it makes absolutely no sense. The only way to beat teams like that is to slow the pace to a crawl and play back to the basket or pick and roll/pop. Even Kobe said that on his podcast. Yes, you run when the opportunity presents itself and shoot the open jumper but when the run and gun team starts cooking, you turn the speed down like DJ Screw. If we can all figure that out, why can’t these executives??? That young boy is a walking bucket and he’s proven it at all levels. If he was over 7 feet tall and couldn’t play a lick he’d be on somebody’s bench in the NBA. And don’t even get me started on the Bronny situation. Come on NBA!!! Y’all gots to do better.
@brodiestephens419Ай бұрын
Yes, he's a walking bucket.... but he can't defend ANYBODY. He's a massive liability on defense, and his offense is not valuable enough to an NBA team to make up for his awful defense. He's too short to defend bigs, and too slow to defend wings and guards. He can't defend the perimeter. He can't defend the post. He can't defend in space. He can't protect the rim. He can't defend in transition.
@mikemcewen516Ай бұрын
@ Are you talking about Kenny Lofton Jr. or a third of the guys in the NBA who are one dimensional players and turnstiles on defense? Lol! The only difference is they’re either taller or thinner but they’re defensive liabilities just the same. We’ll have to agree to disagree. And you can go through every championship roster and find one guy who’s there strictly for his ability to put the ball in the basket but is a defensive liability; Adrian Dantley, Mark Aguirre and Vinnie Johnson come to mind. Pure scorers, defense be damned. Or defensive stoppers who can’t score. The content creator made the point that teams feel like they’d have to change their style of play to have him on the roster but I think your second and third units should be changes of pace anyway. Maybe your second unit is instant offense and your third is defensive specialists. You mix and match them with your starters to suit your current predicament. A good assistant can work with him and teach him how to stay in front of his guy; he’s only 22. He’s Charles Barkley (a classic tweener) with a better jump shot, who’s a lefty, indefensible and can be a star in the NBA. I do think the move overseas is a mistake. He should sign a 2 way deal where he can be called up when needed and possibly for a playoff run. On a side note, NBA execs need to get with their NHL counterparts to learn how to better utilize their minor league talent.

@brandons2842You're half right! KJL is light-years beyond him and a few players. But, Gelo isn't garbage! Maybe misunderstood, or teams don't recognize what he can contribute. I wouldn't comp Gelo to KLJ, I would compare to the handful of players that don't cut it in their supposed position(s) and are moved to SF, PF, or even C, because they're considered too less of something, but are able to play defense or whatever! The NBA forces most role players to simplify their game to shooting 3's, rebounding, and being switchable. Gelo is as fast as Klay Thompson. But, he's slower than most 2 guards. Ok, he's tall enough to play the 3. But, some of y'all will say he's too slow for that position. And, I would ask, how is he too slow to run off screens, and such? Cus,I saw Gelo do those things in the G-League. And, if you saw him play....ever, he has a good basketball I.Q. Lastly, he tends play in the post. He's listed at 6'5", but by pictures, he looks at least 6'6". He stays around a weight of 225, and most teams push those type of players to play the 4. I may not agree, but the players that around those heights and weights, are in the NBA, starting! KLJ, is way better them! Gelo, possibly could be one of the best small ball 4's in the league, if given a chance! He does everything that is asked of those other players. KLJ, would still be better.... Even better than Draymond 🤨

Well since this video doesn't really give an explanation of why Lofton isn't in the League except for blaming analytics for it here are some obvious points: -Post scoring (generally speaking) isn't very effective and it's hard to incorporate it into an offense -Loftons framework makes him an outstandingly bad defender and there's truly no way out of this for him. Even if he was to slim down he couldn't ever stay in front of Nba level guards. Defending Big Men on the other Hand would be trouble for him too since he's just to little. We haven't even touched switchability yet. Far better players have fallen out of the League for this very basic reason: If you're a problem on defense your offensive production needs to be very good to outshine that. If you're not a superstar you may end up unplayable very fast -His free throw percentage is in the 60s which suggests that he'll never be a good volume shooter All of the above are clear red flags for a player of lofton's talent. He does have the offensive skillset to be a 15min per game spark plug but it's very hard to see how he could ever play playoff minutes for a contending team. Therefore teams aren't to invested in him since his potential upside is very limited. He may not be amongst the very worst NBA players, but it's tough to imagine a route to being a positive for him. Playing in China won't really help either since in contrast to what the video mentions china does not have a very competitive League that compares to the European ones in any way (jimmer fredette dropping 50 should have been a clue to that)

@@j5daniel182 they can all shoot and be a positive to the team though. Lofton has too many negatives (short for his position, too slow, can't shoot well, only score ISO ball). Even if you just gave him the ball in the post, teams could double and he's too short to pass over the defense. He hasn't even proven he can score against NBA centers. I saw this dude absolutely DOMINATE my Rio Grande Valley Vipers the last 2 years. I think he hits the nail on the head in analysis. Teams don't want him because they will slow down their offense. He doesn't have the size to be a dominant defender either. IF he was like 360 and maybe 6'9" or 6'10" then maybe it would make more sense. But make NO MISTAKE he is the modern day Baby Barkley. Its silly the reasons but ultimately that's how the NBA game is played now. It makes it more interesting to have constant non-stop action, but we miss out on some incredible talents because of it.

Dallas should sign him. They desperately need a backup PF for Washington and he's only 6'7/6'8. They've been living with Kleber who is a decent defender, but miserable offensively. I don't think he could play center because people would just shoot over him, but if he has a legitimate outside shot to go with his post game, sounds like he'd be a great backup PF.

His eating habit is why he's not in the NBA. He got skill but he's not Zion, and Zion is already a big issue. Also, he was one of the worst D of the NBA when he played. Scoring is one thing, but Basketball is played on both side of the court.

Lofton played for our Jazz last season. He played very well at the end of the year. And I don’t know why he wasn’t given more of a chance. He can get out there, push guys around. And can score efficiently. Why he isn’t playing NBA right now is baffling. It has to be because of his A-typical body type. I wonder if teams are worried about him remaining healthy and in good enough shape for a long term player. We have seen a number of players over the years who are overweight who start strong and flame out. Zion is a great example of this right now. And perhaps he is a good example why NBA teams are hesitant to give Lofton a real chance. But I agree, this guy’s game is centered around his size. And he has a great touch shooting the ball. I wish my Jazz had given him more of a chance especially since we are in rebuild mode anyway. I am a fan of this kid. And I really hope he gets another chance to shine in the NBA….

The teams see him as risky because at that weight it's only a matter of time before he gets a serious injury. Too bad he isn't motivated to drop weight. I says this as a heavy guy myself. For me, I would have done everything I could to drop the needed weight just so I could guarantee myself to be a millionaire and be financially secure for the rest of my life. If his weight is his biggest strength then no team should be taking a chance on him. His skills should be standing out not his weight. Get rid of the weight. At best he will be another baby davis at worst he will be another future bust like zion williamson.

It’s about fit. I think anyone who watches his full games can see he can play but when you put this guy on a team to play a role what role is he supposed to play? How would he fit in a specific team system? If he lost 30lbs then those questions wouldn’t even matter I think he’d be so undeniable as a talent teams would HAVE to keep him. But at 270-280lbs he’s no where near as explosive as Zion and teams aren’t looking for a 6’6 post player not named Zion Williamson. If he got to 240lbs he’d be able to guard more than one position and score on all positions. He’d have the cardio and foot speed to not be a liability on defense and the offensive versatility to play multiple roles on the floor.

The roll I see is just play what he's good at. Which is paint scoring. As a full time starter with better players on the roster then it's another grizz situation. Unless a team doesn't have a center or someone that paint scores. But I don't know. The roll is paint scoring but there just isn't a team who needs it.

To be clear, the reason Kenny was dropped by so many teams in a short period of time wasn't his performance on the court - the dude was reportedly missing practices and was otherwise pretty emotionally immature. His game was fine but he made it hard for teams to rely on him, the guy still needs some time to learn to become a pro. Hoping that his China stint helps him grow a bit, I think he'll get another shot down the line.

Hmm...one of the few teams that isn't slavishly copycatting the "5-out" offensive style. They'd still need better 3-point shooting but seems like he could contribute. But that's how coaches/GMs are, football, baseball, basketball: they claim to be looking for any advantage to win, but in reality, they are just looking for ways to keep their jobs. IOW, they're never going to try anything that, if it fails, can be criticized. That's why all the pro leagues are copycat leagues.
