Freeze Dry is a pretty busted move tbh, Ice is already an offensive type difficult to resist, tacking another super effective on a resist only worsens it. I bet if Iron Bundle didnt have Freeze Dry, it wouldnt get banned.

RU had Gengar and UU had Blacephalon and fucking Volcarona thanks to the dlc introducing monsters like Spectrier, Pheromosa, and Magearna into OU. It’s not just a matter of people learning to use them correctly, it’s just that the other brokens had to go first before Kyurem’s qualities became a legitimate problem.

Kyurems journey in gen 8 is really interesting cause most other Pokémon who were outclassed in previous gens would end up benefitting from the dex cut only to then fall more and more as the crown tundra and isle of armour get introduced. Kyurem did benefit from the dex cut but although it initially did fall after dlc came out it rose even greater than before and actually surpasses it's performance of the previous generations due to people realising it's talents. Nice.

I've never been huge into competitive so I can't speak to that side of things, but Kyurem's design is so top tier. Its asymmetry shows how broken it is from the One Dragon splitting, its tail is like a husk of what used to be a generator like Zekrom or Reshiram, it's just perfect. You can just tell that it's not whole.

I was present when Kyurem was a terror in Gen 8 OU. The development of Kyurem is amazing. It was listed as a B-Tier mon on the Viability Ranking, but in the way peoole talk about it you started to realize how it wasnt. I love Kyurem so much. I picked it up because I wanted something with freeze dry in Gen 8 and I haven’t looked back. Kyurem absolutely shreds rain teams and that is beyond useful in the past 2 gens of National Dex. Plus with Terra it doesn’t even need to run specs to utterly shatter teams. Love this guy so much

Gen 8 was the best Gen for all three Kyurem forms. Ironically, White Kyurem had its worst performance overall due to Dusk Mane Necrozma and better Ice and Dragon types such as Darm-G and Eternatus. Black Kyurem finally gets a physical Ice STAB and DD. Bolt Beam coverage also made it finally get banned from OU. It still struggles in Ubers but performs better than White Kyurem (C- rank vs D). Regular Kyurem got Freeze Dry, and outstalled even its checks such as Heatran with Substitute + DD + Roost + Icicle Spear. With its versatility that can’t be predicted, those things caused it to get banned from OU as well. But still outclassed.

I've been waiting for this one! Gen 5 UU and OU was the hay day of my smogon competitive play. I remember when Kyurem was put into UU and it went under the radar for about a week until people realized that it had been moved down a tier, and I was spamming it as soon as the updated tiers went live. I was so upset about Kyurem in UU that I just spammed that exact choice specs set until it got banned to OU. If anyone was playing UU showdown ladder during this time, you surely remember the boogeyman that was Kyurem. Choice specs blizzard+ stealth rocks one shots most of the tier (something like 90% or more) with a neutral hit. It was straight up dumb, probably one of the most mis-tiered pokemon ever.

Kyurem is funny competitive-tier-wise because it never ended up being solidly in a tier, similar to what Staraptor endured for most of its life. UUBL (the UU banlist) in gen 5. RUBL (the RU banlist) in gens 6 and 7. Ubers (the OU banlist) in gen 8 while being unviable in that tier.

Personally, I wouldn't give base Kyurem anything to give it an edge over its white and black forms because it isn't supposed to be equal. It's essentially missing core components that it once had, and fusing it brings back some of its lost power.

Finally Scarlet and Violet… Kyurem came back to Scarlet and Violet in the Indigo Disk DLC, and at first many people thought it would be much worse in this meta. It had lost Roost and the hazard removal was much worse with many Pokemon losing Defog. But that didn’t last long. For the first time ever, Kyurem’s usage never fell below OU. First, it went back to the classic Choice Specs set, which 2HKOed everything that wasn’t Blissey. But then people attempted to recreate Baxcalibur with an offensive Dragon Dance set, using Loaded Dice to guarantee at least 4 hits on Icicle Spear and Scale Shot. While it didn’t have Baxcalibur’s Earthquake, it could still run Tera Blast Ground, which tore straight through most of OU’s Steel types. Tera Blast Fire traded a hit on Heartan for one on Skarmory. It could even run Substitute, letting it use the likes of defensive Heatran as set up fodder. Then, another Dragon Dance set emerged, this one running Freeze-Dry and Earth Power in the final two slots. This set retained the physical Dragon Dance set’s ability to smash Blissey, while also letting it cleave through Skarmory and Heatran. And we’re still not done! While it lost Roost, Sub+Protect was still a solid option, letting Kyurem PP stall just about any Pokemon that would try to wall it. It loved the recovery move’s PP being cut to 8, giving it an even easier time stalling Blissey, Skarmory and Toxapex. So how do you counter Kyurem? That’s the neat thing: you don’t. Blissey walls the Specs set, but physical sets tear through it and Sub Protect can easily PP stall its recovery. Dondozo and Primarina check its physical sets well, but Freeze Dry puts both of them on Ice. You can outrun and revenge kill it with the likes of Iron Valiant, Roaring Moon and Dragapult, but none of them want to switch in, and if it gets a sub up, Moon and Valiant have to eat an attack first. It’s got so bad that some Pokemon are Terastlysing to the Ice Type to check this thing. It’s currently being suspected in OU, but whether it’s banned or not, this has been its best Generation yet. And considering the power creep Scarlet and Violet bought, that is really saying something.

I didn't expect Kyurem to actually have success; I figured Gen VIII's power creep would ask for too much for its admittedly nice stats. But that Ice Stab is CRUCIAL to its usage, clearly; if it rose to a higher place than its debut generation because of the new ice moves it got, you know that's a good part of Kyurem. I do prefer its fusions to the base form just because they're more unique, but hell, glad to see the base form got its own share of love. It's just a lonely, icy little thing. That may or may not eat people. And be an alien. God his lore is so strange lmao
