I'm born, raised, and still live in Dallas so I know all about the franchise pre-Dirk. Drafting spares like Randy White and Doug Smith set them back a few years. The 3 Js were great, but couldn't get along so that set them back even further. I remember when they drafted Dirk and people were calling him a bust his first year. Oops.

Before Dirk Nowitzki, the Dallas Mavericks had excellent players in Mark Aguirre, Rolando Blackman,Brad Davis,Jay Vincent, Derek Harper and Sam Perkins. Davis came from the CBA, and played in the team's maiden season in 1980-81. Aguirre was an excellent scorer, but was also known for being a bad seed off the court. Regardless, the Mavs had some good teams, but they could not escape the specter of the Los Angeles Lakers in the playoffs.

The mid 90's Mavs team with Jason Kidd,Jamal Mashburn and Jim Jackson could've been the Mavs long term future but their off-court issues got them all traded out of Dallas. In the late 1980's as a lifelong Pistons fan during the Bad Boys era,the trade Mark Agguire for Adrian Dantley was a gift for the Pistons, from that point onwards like they always say the rest is history.

He missed the story of the 80's Mavs. They were a role model for clubs until the Roy Tarpley draft and career. Tarpley started the downfall with his drug use and suspensions and then they started overthinking the draft and you get Randy White, Doug Smith, Jim Farmer, Steve Alford, Cherokee Parks and Samaki Walker. Add in the team being cheap in the 90's plus bad draft picks and you get a wasted decade. Don Nelson was starting the turnaround and then Cuban willing to spend to be good started the rebuild. You also have to mention Aguirre became a cancer in the locker room and Dantley was as bad in Detroit. The mid 80's Mavs was a blast to watch and should have been good into the early 90's. Its similar to the Celtics and Len Bias dying. They just were a stronger franchise and recovered faster.

The Mavs did go up to New York to see Braxton, but it was a team field trip, and neither Kidd nor Jackson went. There’s no evidence that Kidd and Jackson met Braxton in Atlanta. And the Triple J’s denied this. I generally don’t think why people think this is true, and it’s not the main factor of the drama between the triple-J’s. The Dallas Mavericks were a joke, most seasons prior to Dirk. Many losing seasons, no playoffs. Minus a few seasons during the mid - late '80s. Harper, Blackmon, Perkins, Tarpley, Dantley (from the Jazz) , Brad Davis, Aguier years. Coached by Motta They got off to a pretty quick start during the '80s ( an expansion team) , but made the playoffs like in only their 4th season in the league. 5 or 6 seasons in a row in the playoffs and one a division title. Almost knocked off the Lakers in an upset (7 game series, WCF, always played the Lakers tuff in the playoffs back in the '80s) in '88. Around the time the Spurs were a bad lottery team (mid - late '80s) . The West was weaker than the East overall back then in the '80s and '90s. Now the West has been the tuffer conference overall since the 2000s. The '80s is was mostly the Lakers, Nuggets, and Rockets as the elite teams. Spurs in the early-mid '80s as darkhorses. Mavs a darkhorses during the mid - late '80s. But, then a few off court issues, drugs (Tarpley, Harper) and the teams got derailed. The '90s were a terrible time for the Mavs, despite good young talent (Kidd, Jackson, Mashburn, Popeye Jones). Just couldn't put it together. Internal issues, players bumped heads, underachieved as a team. Ended up trading away their young talent. They were a bad lottery team pretty much the entire decade of the '90s. Then Cuban took owenership in the late '90s. Got Dirk in a trade with the Bucks. Drafted Nash, Finley. The Mavs have been very good ever since (minus the past few seasons as the Mavs got older, rebuilding). Won an NBA title in 2011 (consistently playoff chokers, soft jump shooting, finesse team, finally broke thru in the playoffs). Shouldve won it all in 2006 as well, but were robbed against DWade/Heat, but that's a different story. They got their revenge in 2011. Upset, embarrassing the Heat. The Mavs havent really been around for a long time. One of the younger franchises in the league, only in existence since 1980. Big market franchise, yet still very young in terms of the NBA. SA Spurs are still kinda young as well, only been around since the 1970s. Lakers, Celtics, Knicks, Kings (Royals), Hawks, 76ers, Warriors, Pistons, ect are franchises that have been around for very long time. Like 1940s, which is why they all have had at least 1 NBA title in their history. For some, has been a very long time since they have won it all (Kings/Royals, Hawks 1950s...76ers 1980s, Knicks 1970s, etc). For some odd reason, they were usually not a major player in big time free agents (until recent years). But, have always been savvy in teh front office and trades. Since the beginning, 1980s. They should give lessons to teh NY Knicks on how to run a big market franchise. lol. Not bad for a football crazy/first city/market.

I think you have a mistake in 6:46. Instead of 1997, It should be 1987, because I don't think that a player would score around 30 points for a full series in his already 14th season (if Ellis debuted in 1983-1984, by 1996-1997 he would be playing his 14th season). I see more logic that that happened in 1987. Correct me if I'm wrong

There was a variety of reasons why the Mavs couldn’t get over the hump in the late ‘80s and ultimately stayed in the gutter for most of the ‘90s. Mark Aguirre, as good as he was, could’ve been even better. As the leader, he set a bad example from time to time, which cost the team, especially in 1988. The team in the early ‘90s had a lot of talent, but they couldn’t stay healthy. Then, they had bad luck in the Lottery and drafted poorly most of the time. To me, Jim Jackson was the biggest problem between he and Kidd and Mash. They played better w/o him in ‘95 and probably should’ve traded him in the off-season that year. He also held out for most of ‘93, which led to the team going 11-71, along with bad coaching along the way. Don Nelson changed everything for the better and Mark Cuban was the icing on the whole cake. It was a perfect match. God bless them for what they did for the Dallas Mavericks 👍

What a bunch of bullshit! You didn't even mention that Kidd won Rookie of the Year, or why the Three J's underachieved. Mashburn, Jackson, and Kidd hardly ever played together as a trio, because Mashburn and Jackson both suffered significant injuries in separate seasons. Also them trading away a future Hall of Famer in Kidd for Michael Finley should have been pointed out for the horrendous mistake that it was... You also should have mentioned that the supposedly "immature Kidd" took a last place Suns team that had lost 13 straight to open the season before Kidd got there and made them a playoff team, and it was the only time a team had a 10+ game losing streak and 10+ game winning streak in the same season.
