It could have been worse. They could have captured a group of engineers. That would have been really bad for the empire as a group of human engineers let loose on an alien ship with new technology should make any race shudder in fear. Especially if the recording had caught one of them saying "Whoops" when fiddling with the engines, weapons, or other dangerous tech.
