The Aral Sea was rapidly shrinking, due to excessive farming and irrigation. As a result of the drought, the water level in the Aral Sea plummeted, and the once fertile sea became a barren wasteland. 🌎 Subscribe to Time Travels Here:

The Aral Sea was once the fourth-largest lake in the world. But in the 1980s, it became one of the world's largest ecological disasters when the Soviet Union started to build a series of reservoirs to irrigate cotton fields. This video is a look back at the history of the Aral Sea and how greed and incompetence led to its collapse.

The efforts to rescue the northern part of the lake are truly remarkable, it’s a rare case of a restoration effort going better than expected. The Aral basin as a whole is still an ecological nightmare but as long as even a small portion of the sea remains viable there’s still some hope

Absolutely love your channel/content. Informative, educational, yet entertaining and never boring. And, as an old person, the "cherry on top" is your professional appearance and presentation. It's refreshing to see a young "KZbinr" dress more professional than some cable tv hosts. Thank you!

Incredible…. The fact that the government did it on purpose, or at the very least knowing full-well the consequences.

When it comes to planting crops that require huge amounts of water and will compete with other receipients of the already scarce water resources, the avocado plantations are doing it in Central and South America and in Spain. They turn the surrounding land into deserts.

Utterly heartbreaking. If all these central Asian regions that were conquered by imperial Russia had fought to the last not to become a neglected part of the soviet union, this possibly wouldn't have happened.

Mike. Great video. (As always) Super tiny critique though. Is there anyway when you mention any type of metric measurements that you can put small text in the corner showing what it is for us backwards folks in the US. We don’t know how big 67,000 square kilometres is. Would love to see “41,632 square miles” in small text in maybe the top left or bottom right corner. Sadly they don’t teach us metric in school. Besides that, keep the videos coming, because they’re freaking awesome. Thanks. 🤜🏼🤛🏼

@@thejudgmentalcatI did. That’s why the numbers are written in my comment above. 🤦‍♂️ But there shouldn’t be a need for it. When you have a channel, and videos, that reach the entire world, it’s nice to include everyone. @MrBallen and @Doug Demuro are two massive channels, that come to mind, that write the measurements out in small text so their world audience can all understand sizing…..without having to ask Google.

Soviet Union is something of a notroious world champion at incompetence. And its successor Russian Federation as well. Unless it actually undertakes destroying something on purpose. Then it's suddenly very effective.

Absolutely. It's ironic how modern day communists lecture people about the environment yet they conveniently forget about the Aral sea and Chernobyl

Never underestimate the gross inefficiency, ineptitude and sheer incompetence of Soviet communism. Literally everything they touched they destroyed.
