I never thought you would be doing history in my local Freo!

OMG- Baldrick is in WA!! Tony, I know you have done so much of note in the years since, but you made me laugh so much watching and rewatching BA. The thought of accidentally bumping into Baldrick in Freo is hilarious in itself. Welcome to WA.

Tony, I should be telling you about the stories at Freo Prison involving ACDC's Bon Scott being an inmate and the legendary Brendan James Abbott escaping during the fire, dressed as a prison guard, then having the audacity, whilst on the run, to come back to Freo Prison and sign the visitors log as; Name: B. Abbott Address: Nowhere you'd find. Comments: Nice to come back and not have to escape again. When WA Police discovered the entry the next day, the Commissioner and the Police Minister were absolutely livid.

I know it's history, but I think it needs to be bulldozed and a beautiful hotel with lovely grounds could be there. Not that many people are interested in prisons.

People seem to think Australia was settled by English gentleman stepping off the boat and claiming all in sight. The truth was far darker. The people sent here were lower than slaves. Slaves had value, convicts did not.

This prison was running till 1991 without any sewerage or power so to speak. Basically people had to do their business in a bucket and their was no heating or air conditioning of any sort. I worked with a guy that was there in the late 80's till it closed. 40 degree days are not uncommon in Perth so you might get an idea of what the prisoners had to deal with. Hence why it closed. The heat mixed with the smell was the most horrible thing he'd ever experienced. Sorry i didnt ask him what he was in for but he was a respectful albeit odd person. No need to ask. He did his time hard!

Great tours, just make sure you get a better guide. Some are excellent, few are arrogant. The ex Screws can be very rude.

"thought to be a communist" Gee I wonder why. His brother was a communist, his wife was a communist, the woman he was cheating on his wife with was a communist, he had communist sympathies when he was younger... I'm sure it's all just a coincidence. And prejudice!

The great Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon who saw Cape York 15:01 not to be confused with "Abel Janszoon Tasman", or more commonly known simply as Abel Tasman. Abel Janszoon Tasman was the first recorded European to visit New Zealand in 1642 (That is the real NZ). He gave New Zealand it's European name after his wife who was from "Zeeland" in the Netherlands. There is no record of Ab Tasman ever actually setting foot on NZ soil. He anchored near Farewell Spit at present day Golden Bay at the very top of the South Island / Te Wai Pounamu, and attempted to put ashore a landing party in a long boat. They were intercepted by Maori in canoes (waka) and after a misunderstanding the landing party were killed. At the time Tasman named the bay "Murderers Bay" and then left.

I know of a lot of coppers that had a begrudging admiration for Abbott because a lot of them saw him as ahead of his time, like a surveillance unit on steroids and someone with the precision of an SAS scalpel.

WRONG TUNE The guy playing the bugle in Newcastle in honour of an Australian ex-POW 1:27:51 is playing the American "Taps" instead of playing "The Last Post". In Commonwealth countries it should be the Last Post in honour of Commonwealth soldiers - Australian, New Zealand, Canadian and British. Taps is for Americans soldiers. It is the US equivalent of our Last Post.

In 1994 a movie was made of the murder committed by those two school girls. "Heavenly Creatures" directed by none other than Peter Jackson. It was the movie which gave Melanie Lynskey and Kate Winslet their big breaks in movies leading in Kate Winslet's case to her role in movies like "Titanic".
