I think my only coach option for Newport to Preston in the UK takes 8h 25m, arrives at Preston at 02:25, and the return would leave Preston at 03:15. In these circumstances I hope you will appreciate me either taking an hourly train (with a change at either Crewe or Birmingham New Street) or driving (which would be the west side of Birmingham).

@@vatoloco6536 Oh, this 8.5 hour journey is about 4 by rail, and in theory (with no traffic and no stops) would be about 3:15 by car; in reality probably the same 4 hours as the train (hourly, one change either at Crewe or at Birmingham New Street, the UK's equivalent of New York Penn Station though not as bad).

I’m lucky, if I catch an express, I can get home in only an hour or so longer than it takes to go myself. I love travel by coach, far more flexible than rail, and often faster, and a hell of a lot cheaper, than air.

I've ridden from Michigan to South Florida and from Miami to Oregon. It takes a lot of stamina as it takes several days and sleep is hard to come by. Eating isn't easy either and the stations are very uncomfortable with terrible metal seats. If there is an accident or if traffic is bad and you miss a connection you may be stuck at a station for many hours waiting on a new route. This has happened 3 times out of my five or so trips w them. It is a good way to see the country and meet some interesting people to say the least. Use caution in the big city stations especially at night.

My biggest problem with Greyhound is that it often costs just as much as flying but takes an ungodly amount of more time. I’d rather suffer a 2 hour flight than an 18 hour bus drive.

It lacked any form of soul and the ride was really bumpy. Granted, this was a few years back. That bus was probably from the 2000's or late 90's. But still.

I have never been in a greyhound bus, but i have taken a charter bus in South Korea and it was the best experience ever!!! The bus had fast wifi and recliner chairs. The bus fare was $15 for an hour ride to my destination from the airport. It was an amazing experience.

I dreamed about taking a bus somewhere, despite being warned by literally everyone I mentioned it to to stay away. I found myself in a situation a couple years ago where I actually needed Greyhound, so I jumped at the opportunity. The first station was… chaotic. It was this large, open building filled to the brim with tired people. I listened to stories of people being stuck for days all over the country due to broken down busses. I also got to hear a recently released felon tell his story, so that was nice too. The bus ride itself was fine. Long, but fine. But my arrival station… I groan driving by it still now. It was disgusting. Packed to the gills with people to a point where you could barely move. I finally made it to the ladies room only to find zero toilets, and 2 holes in the brick walls where they used to be. Never again. I feel so sorry for people that rely on this mode of transport, because it’s insulting as a human being for the proprietors to think anything like this is okay.

But I only use Greyhound to get access to the nearest big city with an international airport and trains to other major metro areas. I'm so lucky to have a clean and high quality transit depot in my small town though.

I took Greyhound once. On the first leg of my journey, the bus driver got the bus stuck under a bridge on the railroad tracks into South Station. It had to be towed to the bus terminal side of the buiding. The sign for the bus lanes was the size of Texas and he still missed it!

As a 42 year old New Yorker, I used to ride Carl Beiber Tourways from the PABT in Midtown Manhattan to my grandparents' house near Reading, Pennsylvania for decades. Not anymore. The company phased out commercial passenger service some years back. Once spotted a Beiber Bus parked outside the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Had to ask the driver THIS COMPANY STILL DOES PASSENGER SERVICE? He told me they made the switch to primarily college and academic field trips. No ticketed interstate passenger service anymore. I still got a 2005 PABT paper schedule from Beiber Tourways.❤

I've had the misfortune of taking a greyhound bus once. It cost me about $120 all in. Most disastrous part of the trip was that i had to answer natures urgent number 2 call. The hurried 3minutes spent in there was the worst of my life. Imagine spine bending moves required to avoid landing/touching on faecal matters left all over the seat and walls by people, in a MOVING BUS! I almost died when i discovered Spirit Airlines later that day and that it would have cost me just around $40-60 and about 3hrs for the same trip i spent 8hrs on the damn Greyhound. I will never, i repeat, never get on a greyhound/any bus again

Problem with Greyhound is that the only real competitor is Amtrak. Every terminal I have been inside in various cities were disgusting enough to make you vomit.😫😝 A Greyhound employee at the Columbus, Ohio terminal stole my free travel voucher given to me at the Cincinatti terminal for the inconvenience of me having to wait more hours for the terminal causing me and several others to miss our bus 🚌 due to being unable to catch our bus' departure because the doorgate was locked where we were sopposed to board.

I've travelled by bus in Mexico a few times and I agree. My observation is that the average Mexican traveller travels by bus because he/she can't afford a plane ticket and it's also what they are accustomed to. The average American flies when going long distances intercity. Go to any sizeable Mexican city and you'll see a "Central de Autobuses" typically in much better shape than most American bus stations. Likely a difference in economies for the average traveler in each country. I wonder if the Mexican government subsidizes the bus companies there.

I always love (err... hate) the "preemptive scolding" you get on a Greyhound from the driver. Comes on the PA, "sit down, shut up or I will leave you on the side of the highway." Has happened on almost every Greyhound I've ridden on, almost no Megabuses, Peter Pans, Concord Coaches, C&J, etc. It sets an atrocious tone for the riders and signals to normal people that it's not the place to be and isn't safe. Then, the drivers deal with worse people over their tenure and get angrier and more burnt out because sketchy folks are the only ones riding, because the experience sucks. A vicious cycle that no one cared to fix. I can't believe management has been so poor as to not recognize this as a major problem. And it stinks because it really doesn't have to be this way. City center to city center with incredible efficiency, both cost and environmental? It could be awesome. It's horrific because of the soft stuff they've absolutely flopped on.

From what I've observed, Greyhound caters to the inner-city criminal element that cannot travel via airlines; their cover will be exposed when asked for ID before boarding the airplane. That would explain the violence that breaks out on their buses.

Greyhound has been on a downward spiral in recent years due to the ownership by Firstgroup and prior to that Laidlaw. Both of those multinational corporations have little understanding of the north American Motorcoach market. Until or unless Greyhound is purchased by an entity with passion and knowledge of the bus industry, they will suffer. The current business model of relocating terminals to fringe locations in industrial areas and eliminating local/regional routes has left the system fragmented and undesirable to most of the public. There remains a great deal of potential however the company must be sold and return to its roots.

January 16,2022 greyhound took my money and never showed up. I purchased the flexible-refundable ticket and arrived an hour early and waited all night. They refuse to give me a refund even though I have proof. Don't trust this company. They are unreliable and crooked. There is no customer service that one can speak to. Every thing is done by email. I have been given 4 different excuses. First they said I purchased a promotional ticket that is nonrefundable. I sent a screen shot of my ticket. Then they said the rule is that you have to cancel 24 hours in advance to get your money back. Then they said that the bus was never delayed. Then they said that my ticket was used! BBB and FTC!

I used to drive coaches, learned to drive them in Mexico at age 19. Mexico has a far superior Interstate bus system. They offer fast service as they use two drivers on board, one rests in a private bunk until its his turn. Their coaches also have CURTAINS on the windows, which makes it more comfortable for obvious reasons. They dont have as much driver turnaround because the coach is assigned to the team drivers and they can customize them to a certain extent and that brings out the pride in many drivers, it also makes them accountable for the condition of their coach. Coach drivers in Mexico are as respected as airline pilots in the US. They are not looked down upon, they earn a living wage.

@@georgeklimes7604 The cost is very reasonable and they offer many options ranging from economy class, in between and up to first class. Though it seems to be a decreasing trend due to better police/military presence and better technology , buses do sometimes get hassled by gangs depending on the area and time of day....for obvious reasons night time is the danger zone. Southern Mexico hosts nighttime Native Peoples Bandits of which even I was a witness to during my training days. In the north part of Mexico I didn't really encounter any issues with that , though did hear rumors of it happening to other drivers. TBH, I would be more worried about hitting a cow or horse in the middle of the night than getting robbed. Ive seen what damage that can do to a fully loaded bus traveling 65+ mph.

I've been on 3 greyhound round trips, 2 of those times the bus was over 5 hours late, and it was never on time, with the fastest time only being an hour late. That is absolutely insane and I'm so glad to have a car soon so I'll never have to take one again.

A couple years ago I wanted to save a couple extra dollars by traveling by bus instead of flying. HORRIBLE mistake! The bus station was disgusting and the people on the bus looked so suspicious. There is a MAJOR difference between people who fly and people who ride the bus! I will never take the Greyhound ever again.

Haven't been on Greyhound buses before, but I used to ride on a coach from Singapore to Kuala Lumpur as a kid way back in 2004 and it wasn't that bad. Then again, transit in Asia in my opinion is a lot better than in North America, a lot cleaner too.

I live by one and it’s so run down, never looks open but you see people waiting outside. Not something anyone would just want to book and take a ride. Most passengers are the homeless transients. Roaming town to town, It’s not the safest ride you can look for.

That's a lie. Greyhound REQUIRES a fully paid ticket. Those tickets, depending upon one's destination, are MORE expensive then flying. The buses are slightly more updated and pretty clean; ESPECIALLY during Covid. The stations are clean, for the most part, and the bathrooms are, too. Just say you don't KNOW, don't make up lies! There's a LOT of college students and moms with a small kid, or a grandma that doesn't drive. The homeless CANT AFFORD it and ANY foolishness will be put OFF the bus! Believe it! Now, it IS kinda slow! This is an inaccurate report.

I definitely agree with you. The wife (native of Mexico) and I took a bus from Phoenix to Las Mochis. I was very Leary about the idea once we boarded I was very impressed spacious comfortable seating that reclined so you could sleep comfortable the drivers were friendly and courteous. Fantastic experience.

Not an American, but I went to a U.S. high school in the 90s and I had a few classmates who had a piece of junk which they bought using money from their part time jobs (fast food etc.). How does an adult not afford a piece of junk of their own for the price of three to five bus tickets, if they ride "all time"?

I find Amtrak to be a lot better, even in long distance coach. That said, Greyhound does provide a valid service and can even compliment train travel. On my last trip I went from OKC to Dallas by train, Greyhound to Wash. D. C. (train got cancelled), and from Washington, D. C. to Meriden, CT. The bus part was difficult, but at least it was available in a pinch. I know people say that Greyhound doesn't treat their clientele to well, and that is true in my experience, but I think Greyhound employees have to deal with idiots so often that they treat everyone as if they are annoyances. On my last trip, the driver had to kick a drunk guy off the bus. Some of the staff were downright rude.

There's just no way, a greyhound is $163 to Ontario from NYC. By comparison my flight is $87 and also 7x shorter in length and much more pleasant. You'd have to be out of your mind to take that bus right now

Like 6 years ago, my girlfriend and I decided to take a trip to New York City on a bus. We thought it would be cheaper than driving and less stressful. That ride took 4 hours to get there and 4 hours to take us back. Driving we get there in 2 and half hours. Never again. And those seats are horrible!

"To compete with Flixbus ..." And it's already swallowed by Flixbus. Flixbus won't go the luxury way with 2+1 seating and catering. They operate high capacity buses, no frills service, low fares. At times your coach might get lost, be delayed or not come or arrive at all. Some years ago we had a number of long distance coach operators in central Europe, now it's just Flixbus who bought up most of them. According to the video though, besides providing cheap connections between city centers, Greyhound also serves rural towns. That would be the equivalent of Swiss Postauto, Austrian ÖBB-Postbus, the variety of DB Regio Bus companies and subcontractors in Germany, TEC in Belgium ... and so on. Many of them running on behalf of regional transportation authorities (that take the fares and order the lines, compensating the bus company for it). That is different from the Flixbus business model (which consists of cherry-picking the routes that will always have passengers and undercutting the fares of other public transportation). If it's just a free market without any public funding, Greyhound (by Flixbus) doesn't have an obligation to the more far-out places with fewer passengers. Flixbus won't run lines at a loss, they will concentrate on those that make money.

I think movies and TV have made me think of Greyhound as a sort of outdated mode of transport, taking poor people to podunk backwater towns. The brand just doesn't make me think of modern travel such as the Shinkansen in Japan or the really cool high speed rail networks of Europe and China

Japan has overnight busses too. However they are super clean and punctual to a T as you would expect. The reason why they have overnight buss is because they operate later than the bullet train and it’s cheaper. Some people like the trip.

Gray hound bus terminal on 42nd street has more homeless than passengers. Some of those home less are very aggressive because they think that bus terminal is their territory. Their bathrooms are extremely dirty.

I'm a Female CDL Driver, for 11+years. I use to work for American Airlines. I thought about working for Greyhound, as I drove various Buses (School Buses, Retirement Community Buses, Tour Buses etc.) . However, I decided to retire my CDL. Last time i took Grayhound it took 17 hours for a 9 hour drive pure hell. I had the privilege to ride in there new model. Smaller more cramped more miserable but had better MPG. The bus station had restrooms like mexico. Prisons have better. Our bus driver left one passenger behind on our lunch stop and if you like crazy rasta bums sitting next to you your all good.

I road the trail way bus, operated by greyhound from Montreal to NYC. I read a lot of bad reviews about that specific bus station and bus service. I was expecting the worst but it turned out to be a nice experience, bus was clean, driver was nice, bus arrived on time and we made to NYC a little earlier than scheduled. It was my first time using coach for travel in the United States. I cannot speak for any other routes in the country but this one route was a nice one.

In my twenties, I was taking an Amtrak across country, I was heading for Detroit. The train had problems in Toledo, so they transferred us to a bus. It should have only been an hour and a half, 2 hours tops, but it was really long and I fell asleep. And my bag got stolen right off me 😳The end😂

I generally prefer to drive my car when I travel. However, I have taken a train and bus several years ago. I took a greyhound bus on a 400 mile trip. I took a taxi from my home to the bus station, got on the bus, and spent the day looking out the window. Got off the bus, spent the night in a hotel then got a ride the next morning to my destination. It was a pleasant trip. The bus was clean. The seats comfortable. And the bus on time. Overall a pleasant experience. Unfortunately, in order to save costs, Greyhound has given up and sold many of their bust stations. So catching the bus is less desirable than it was. I would like to see greyhound survive and flourish. It is pretty much reality that a number of cross country bus riders are people with more limited resources. Bolt buses were flashy and for a while everywhere. Now nowhere to be seen. The pandemic will eventually run its course and people will eventually no longer need to “social distance” themselves. I expect that then we will see intercity bus service pick back up and grow again.

Took a month trip to Houston last summer with Greyhound. The trip to Houston was absolutely awful. Checked in, got my ticket, waited for the bus, and boarded. Five minutes into the trip, the driver circled back to the station. They claimed that the bus was having issues, but I didn't see any issue. I then waited for 7 hours at the starting point in sweltering heat. The new bus didn't have electricity, so I had to live with a dead phone without communicating with family when I needed to. The bus was so late that I had to stay overnight in a hotel in an unfamiliar city. I'm so grateful for my family who decided to drive a state away to pick me up. The trip back home was a completely different experience. No issues, no breakdowns, no delayed buses. It was straightforward and I arrived safely and on time. So, I kind of have a mixed feeling about Greyhound. Sometimes they're efficient and clean, sometimes not. It just comes down to luck, I guess. I'm taking the trip again tomorrow to visit on the holidays, and I absolutely hope that I get lucky again.

1985 rode greyhound tampa to la and back tampa 96 hours to la and about 84 hours back to tampa. 12 hour layover in paso west bound. I had good time..

Could Greyhound separate its service by metropolitan regions and allow city transit bus systems in that part of the state; run regional bus service for them. It would be cool to have city transit buses in major cities be aligned with over-the road coaches for a total traveling choice and experience. This could be a city-metropolitan and regional bus connectivity that successfully assures travel, whether a individual stays in inner city to the suburbs to the outskirts of major cities and even small towns just outside those metro regions. Just an idea!.

One area that Greyhound can improve (without an increase in cost) is to work on their schedule. I enjoy traveling by train and yet when I look at taking Greyhound to the nearest AMTRAK station, the bus is schedule to arrive 10-15 minutes after the train leaves.

In DC they've statically moved their terminal to the second level of Union Station, along with the other newfangeled bus companies, with access to Amtrak, MARC and Metro. In Silver Spring, MD they relocated to the Silver Spring Transit center.
